Twenty chapters are broken into three thorough sections: Instruction, Liaison Engagement, and Outreach Collections Projects and Programs Collaborations, Special Projects, and Community Partnerships Ethnic studies programs, faculty, and students can lack visibility in librarianship, though there are many opportunities to engage with and support these interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary programs. Ethnic Studies in Academic and Research Libraries captures case studies, programs, and engagements within the field(s) of ethnic studies and how library workers are creating and documenting important support services and resources for these communities of learners, scholars, activists, and educators. We need to think critically about how we support ethnic studies and our faculty colleagues in these departments, especially during challenging times in fiscal crises and the systemic violence and oppression that occurs in higher education, in our institutions, in our communities, in our profession, and in our histories. What we collect, preserve, share, and uplift reflects who we are and our priorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected materials produced by Title IX Ethnic Heritage Studies Program projects, funded from 1974 through 1978, are evaluated in this catalog. The materials were selected by three panels of evaluators using three areas of criteria: (1) appropriateness for use in learning situations; (2) ethnic authenticity of content, and (3) technical quality for potential dissemination. An introduction describes the purpose of the evaluation project, development of evaluation instruments, selection of panelists who evaluated materials, and process and results of the evaluation. One hundred and two projects (comprised of 438 pieces of materials) are evaluated. These evaluations are organized by state or territory and, within each state or territory, by the institution that received the grant. Headings for each entry include information on the project title and address, name of project director, ethnic group or groups on which the project focused, audience and grade level for the project, the project's subject (curricular) area, the format of the materials developed (i.e., print or nonprint), the amount of funding, the titles of materials accepted, and availability information for each piece of material. The heading information is followed by a description of the project materials. The final and major portion of the entry for each project presents evaluative comments and suggestions made by members of the three panels. Four indexes facilitate use of the analyses--ethnic group, geographic area, subject area, and materials titles. Appendices include evaluation instruments and a list of Ethnic Studies projects. Book excerpt: A powerful history of student protests and student rights during the desegregation era In the late 1960s, protests led by students roiled high schools across the country. As school desegregation finally took place on a wide scale, students of color were particularly vocal in contesting the racial discrimination they saw in school policies and practices. And yet, these young people had no legal right to express dissent at school. It was not until 1969 that the Supreme Court would recognize the First Amendment rights of students in the landmark Tinker v. Des Moines case. A series of students’ rights lawsuits in the desegregation era challenged everything from school curricula to disciplinary policies. But in casting students as “troublemakers” or as “culturally deficient,” school authorities and other experts persuaded the courts to set limits on rights protections that made students of color disproportionately vulnerable to suspension and expulsion. Troublemakers traces the history of black and Chicano student protests from small-town Mississippi to metropolitan Denver and beyond, showcasing the stories of individual protesters and demonstrating how their actions contributed to the eventual recognition of the constitutional rights of all students. Offering a fresh interpretation of this pivotal era, Troublemakers shows that when black and Chicano teenagers challenged racial discrimination in American public schools, they helped remake American constitutional law and establish protections of free speech, due process, equal protection, and privacy for students.
