However, as Elizabeth Rawitsch argues, Capra's construction of national identity did not occur within an exclusively national context. Complicating Edward Said's theory of Orientalism as a strict binary in which the West constructs the East as an inferior 'other', it demonstrates that East and West often intermingle in films such as The Bitter Tea of General Yen and in Capra's orientation documentaries for World War II American servicemen; Capra imagined a kind of global community, albeit one with heavy undertones of British and American imperialism. The materials were selected by three panels of evaluators using three areas of criteria: (1) appropriateness for use in learning situations; (2) ethnic authenticity of content, and (3) technical quality for potential dissemination. An introduction describes the purpose of the evaluation project, development of evaluation instruments, selection of panelists who evaluated materials, and process and results of the evaluation. One hundred and two projects (comprised of 438 pieces of materials) are evaluated. These evaluations are organized by state or territory and, within each state or territory, by the institution that received the grant. Headings for each entry include information on the project title and address, name of project director, ethnic group or groups on which the project focused, audience and grade level for the project, the project's subject (curricular) area, the format of the materials developed (i.e., print or nonprint), the amount of funding, the titles of materials accepted, and availability information for each piece of material. The heading information is followed by a description of the project materials. The final and major portion of the entry for each project presents evaluative comments and suggestions made by members of the three panels. Four indexes facilitate use of the analyses--ethnic group, geographic area, subject area, and materials titles. Appendices include evaluation instruments and a list of Ethnic Studies projects. The 2012 conference was the second in what is becoming an annual series of meetings, and the present volume therefore is a companion to one issued last year by Cambridge Scholars Publishing (Intercultural Horizons: Best Practices in Intercultural Competence Development, 2012). The papers included in this volume reflect a diversity of approaches both to intercultural education in the North American setting and to its application in service-learning and related contexts in diverse cultural settings in other nations. Our authors provide faculty and student perspectives, primarily from the level of postsecondary education but including a look as well at intercultural education at the primary level. Many of the papers focus in one way or another on issues of curriculum, teaching and learning in relation to developing intercultural competence in students in North American colleges and universities, particularly though not exclusively through the use of service-learning. All of the papers touch in one way or another on another important development now affecting almost all institutions of higher education in North America and, increasingly, in other nations worldwide—that of the university’s engagement with the community. During the past thirty years, such engagement has moved from the periphery to the core of many North American colleges and universities. Similar efforts are now emerging among many Asian universities and in Europe as well.
