Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transactions of the Finnish Anthropological Society No. 38 The research area of this study was once the focal point of colonial penetration in East Africa. The author traces the evolution of ethnicity from the 15th century until the post-colonial period. She argues that ethnic group identification is used as a self-referent. People's perception of the present is a reflection of the colonial practice of dividing people into tribes. Yet, villagers in the Bagamoyo District stress commonality -- another dimension of ethnic consciousness.

Book Tanzania

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Lawrence
  • Publisher : New Africa Press
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9987930832
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book Tanzania written by David Lawrence and published by New Africa Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a general introduction to Tanzania. It's also a look at Tanzania from a contemporary and historical perspective. The focus is on Tanzania today. Some of the major political, economic and social developments which have taken place in the country especially since the seventies also constitute a significant part of the book. The book is intended for those who are going to Tanzania for the first time and for anybody else who wants to learn some basic facts about the largest country in East Africa. Readers are also going to learn quite a few things about the people of Tanzania and their tribes or ethnic groups and where these groups traditionally live. Also covered in the book are the towns and cities in all the provinces of this large country. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive picture of the country by focusing on a number of areas including a general background of Tanzania; the geography of the country; life in Tanzania today and how life was in the seventies and eighties under socialism known as ujamaa which means familyhood in Kiswahili; the country's transition from socialism to a free market economy; ethnic groups or tribes and their home districts and regions; racial minorities who constitute a significant part of Tanzania's population; the Swahili people and their culture; towns and cities; the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and its prospects and challenges; and life in Tanzania - in what was then Tanganyika - in the fifties just before independence. There are also chapters on Dar es Salaam, the nation's largest city and commercial centre and former capital, and on the former island nation of Zanzibar. Tanzania also is unique in one fundamental respect. It's the only union of two independent countries ever formed on the African continent. And it's the only one that exists today almost half a century after it was formed. The union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar is one of the subjects covered in the book, and readers are going to learn about one of the most important events in the history of post-colonial Africa on a continent where the quest for unity has remained an elusive dream since independence in the fifties and sixties. The book also includes a lot of information on Tanganyika just before independence and how it became one of the first countries in Africa to emerge from colonial rule. Also included is some material on one of the most interesting ethnic groups in African history and how it came into being. It's the Swahili whose language is also known as Swahili especially among many people around the world who are not native speakers of the language. Among the native speakers, the language is called Kiswahili. It's the main language spoken in Tanzania and Kenya. It's also spoken in several other countries in east-central Africa. And we are going to learn something about this language which transcends ethnicity. Kiswahili is not identified with any African tribe, making it a truly Pan-African language building bridges across ethnicity, cultures and nations especially in the eastern part of the continent. And as you learn about Tanzania, you are also going to learn a few things about an area bigger than Tanzania because of the country's connection to other parts of East Africa and beyond.

Book Telling Our Own Stories

Download or read book Telling Our Own Stories written by Shetler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of ethnic group histories, written by authors from the Mara Region of Tanzania, local people tell their stories as a way to inspire development that builds on the strengths of the past. It combines histories from the small, but closely related, ethnic groups of Ikizu, Sizaki, Ikoma, Ngoreme, Nata, Ishenyi and Tatoga in South Mara, east of Lake Victoria and west of Serengeti National Park. Many of the authors compiled their stories by meeting with groups of elders. They were concerned to preserve history for the next generation who had not taken the time to learn the stories orally. The stories were written in Swahili and translated into English with annotations and an introduction so that readers not familiar with this region might also share in the experience. It also includes transcriptions of oral interviews with some of the same stories to get a sense of the ongoing conversions about the past. This collection makes local history told in a local idiom accessible to students of African history interested in social memory and the creation of ethnicity.

Book Indian Africa Minorities of Indian Pakistani Origin in Eastern Africa

Download or read book Indian Africa Minorities of Indian Pakistani Origin in Eastern Africa written by Adam, Michel and published by Mkuki na Nyota Publishers. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have minorities from the Indian sub-continent amongst their population. The East African Indians mostly reside in the main cities, particularly Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Mombasa, Kampala; they can also be found in smaller urban centres and in the remotest of rural townships. They play a leading social and economic role as they work in business, manufacturing and the service industry, and make up a large proportion of the liberal professions. They are divided into multiple socio-religious communities, but united in a mutual feeling of meta-cultural identity. This book aims at painting a broad picture of the communities of Indian origin in East Africa, striving to include changes that have occurred since the end of the 1980s. The different contributions explore questions of race and citizenship, national loyalties and cosmopolitan identities, local attachment and transnational networks. Drawing upon anthropology, history, sociology and demography, Indian Africa depicts a multifaceted population and analyses how the past and the present shape their sense of belonging, their relations with others, their professional and political engagement.

Download or read book The Ways of the Tribe written by Gervase Tatah Mlola and published by E & D Vision Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Ways of the Tribe" is an attempt to explore the diverse tribal cultures of Tanzania and to examine how they contribute towards our modern identity and national development. The book covers the tribes of north-eastern Tanzania scattered in the four regions of Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Manyara. These regions form a vast area of the country, extending from the northern coast of Tanzania to the plains of Serengeti near Lake Victoria, bulging out from the slopes of the northern volcanoes to the floor of the Great Rift Valley. They include the well-known landmarks of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, the crater highlands of Ngorongoro and the ancient eastern arc mountains of Usambara. This is also the location of the active volcano, Oldoinyo Lengai, the extensive Maasai Steppes and the alkaline Lakes of Manyara, Eyasi and Natron. About 20 tribal cultures have evolved in this part of the country, each with its own unique language, mode of life and folklore. "The Ways of the Tribe" is written for those who are interested in the interplay between the beauty of the land and the beauty of its people. And it is also written for native dwellers, whose culture has been inextricably linked to this magnificent area since the time of their ancestors. "The Ways of the Tribe" explores 14 indigenous tribes in the area anddraws from them a cornucopia of African traditions, philosophies and humour in a manner that calls for a renaissance of African identity. The 14 tribes are described in separate chapters, each of which divides into the same five headings covering tribal origins, history, community life, customs and national development. This arrangement has been useful in compiling the book and will also, it is hoped, be of assistance to anyone wishing to make comparisons across the tribes. In the modern world, African tribes and cultures face a challenge from increasing western influence. With this in mind, a cautionary chapter on the lost tribe of Engaruka has been included. This unfortunate tribe once prospered a great deal and then vanished about 300 years ago leaving a deserted settlement, still visible today - a matter of curiosity to contemporary historians. What happened to the tribe? Where did its people go? And will they return? ... The long study of these peoples has raised interesting questions about how the tribes developed their own lifestyles, languages and traits. Why is every tribe where it is? How did the tribes' myths of origin evolve? I hope to have thrown light on these questions in "The Ways of the Tribe," which is my contribution to the rich cultural diversity in Tanzania. Gervase Tatah Mlola Excerpts from the Introduction]
