Book Ethnic Relations in Malaysia

Download or read book Ethnic Relations in Malaysia written by Syed Husin Ali and published by Strategic Information and Research Development Centre. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Malaysia in the throes of sweeping political change, academic turned political activist Dr Syed Husin Ali traces how ethnicity has been manipulated, since Independence, by Malaysian politicians for their own gain to the detriment of the masses. In articles spanning more than three decades, collected for the first time here, he dissects the origins, fallacies and destructive nature of ethnic politics in Malaysia and examines the issue of class versus ethnicity or race. It is time, he argues, for an end to race- or ethnic-based politics. In this new edition, the author has updated the book in terms of facts and events, and included two more articles.

Book Ethnonational Identities

Download or read book Ethnonational Identities written by S. Fenton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-10-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prominence of ethnonational identities and movements is of increasing interest and concern in today's world. But the nature and importance of these identities remain ill understood. Ethnonational Identities breaks significant new ground by exploring the complex dimensions of ethnonational identity claims, their political mobilisation, and a wide variety of comparative contexts in which they are found. Including case studies from the Québécois to the Mäori and from Kashmiri nationalism to interethnic competition in the Caribbean, it should be read by all those with an interest or involvement in the fields of ethnicity, nationalism and identity politics.

Download or read book The Malay Labourer written by Zawawi Ibrahim and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1998 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ethnography of the emerging proletarian social consciousness and resistance as Malay peasants from east coast peninsular Malaysia find themselves reconstituted as a "class" not only as an economic category but also as a "community" in plantation society. The plantation, as a "window" to capitalism, serves as an excellent small-scale empirical ambience and testing-ground to probe how Malays respond to both industrial class-status authority and wage labouring work. The author subsequently analyses how the nuances of Malay proletarian moral economy and dignity are articulated with their notions of class, culture, ethnicity, and humanism.
