This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Toward a Theory of Governance written by Jacques Lenoble and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century Western democracies have struggled to keep faith with both economic efficiency and social justice. Yet reconciliation of these factors remains as baffling as ever. Among the many voices clamoring today for a theory of collective action, we hear most often of the great chasm between ?legitimacy? and ?efficiency?. It is the contention of the authors of this ground-breaking book that these antinomies can be seen as distinct ?moments of application? in the operation of normative judgement, and that a reflexive treatment of norms of collective action, by clarifying limitations in rules and beliefs, allows us to develop mechanisms to correct the limiting effects of such judgements and act accordingly. Drawing on and developing recent trends in the social sciences, The Action of Norms presents a powerful new theory of governance with far-reaching implications for the future of law, the judiciary, and justice itself. Among the contributing modern ideas that are explained and developed as pillars of the authors? thesis are the following: critiques of the ?political theory of interest groups?; the economic theory of efficiency; deliberative democracy; rational choice theory; the evolutionist debate; learning process theory; and the theory of risk. Lenoble and Maesschalck achieve a remarkable synthesis of relevant thought about forms of social organization?from Kant and Fichte through Hayek, Rawls, and Habermas to current theory?and place it at the service of a new and effective theory of the norm that promises to greatly elucidate the role of law and legal practice in the continuing development of democratic institutions.
Download or read book Responsible Deliberation between Conversation and Consideration written by Bernard Reber and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-11-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication is a crucial issue in our complex societies tinted by distrust. It is the core of democratic life and almost all human and social actions. Therefore it is essential for communication to be responsible. But responsible communication cannot only be conceived as a deontological issue, framed by ethical compliance requirements or good practices promotion. It should be considered with all the virtualities of communication, from conversation to consideration, going through narrative, interpretation and argumentation. Indeed each of these communicational capacities has its properties, assets, complementarities and limitations. They constitute different ways to be responsive. This book offers a contribution to the debate of Theory of Deliberative Theory (TDD), reexamined here within its different inspiration sources, notably the opposition between communicational turn and system, the fact of moral pluralism and the public reason.

Download or read book Conflits des interpr tations dans la soci t de l information thique et politique de l environnement Trait des sciences et techniques de l information written by CHARDEL Pierre-Antoine and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Politics of Culture and the Spirit of Critique written by Seyla Benhabib and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of tightly woven dialogues engages prominent thinkers in a discussion about the role of culture-broadly construed-in contemporary society and politics. Faced with the conceptual inflation of the notion of 'culture, ' which now imposes itself as an indispensable issue in contemporary moral and political debates, these dynamic exchanges seek to rethink culture and critique beyond the schematic models that have often predominated, such as the opposition between "mainstream multiculturalism" and the "clash of civilizations." Prefaced by an introduction relating current cultural debates to the critical theory tradition, this book examines the politics of culture and the spirit of critique from three different vantage points. To begin, Gabriel Rockhill and Alfredo Gomez-Muller provide a stage-setting dialogue, followed by discussions with two major representatives of contemporary critical theory: Seyla Benhabib and Nancy Fraser. Working at the horizons of this tradition, Judith Butler, Immanuel Wallerstein, and Cornel West then provide important critical perspectives on cultural politics. The book's concluding section engages with Michael Sandel and Will Kymlicka, who work out of the Rawlsian tradition yet are uniquely concerned with the issue of culture, broadly understood. The epilogue, an interview with Axel Honneth, returns to the core issue of critical theory in cultural politics. Ranging from recent developments and progressive interventions in critical theory to dialogues that incorporate its insights into larger discussions of social and political philosophy, this book sharpens old critical tools while developing new strategies for rethinking the role of 'culture' in contemporary society.

Download or read book Ethical Values in International Decision Making written by B. Landheer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference on "Ethical values in international decision making" was held by the Grotius Seminarium in the period June 16-20, 1958 at the Institute of Social Studies in the Hague. At that time, a number of papers were distributed to the par ticipants while -after the Conference -two brief reports appeared in "De Internationale Spectator" (1958, I, p. 426-435) and in "Research and Education in the Netherlands" (September 1958, Vol. II, no. 3, p. 18-21). As considerable time has elapsed since, this Booklet does not give a "report" on the Conference, but rather it attempts to recapture its spirit and to elaborate some of the problems which were discussed. The introductory "Remarks" do this in an indi vidualistic manner for which the author alone is responsible, but it is hoped that this way of presenting the topic of the Conference anew will rekindle the interest of the original participants while it may attract others and give them an impression of what the Grotius Seminarium is trying to do. In addition, those of the papers which dealt with the more general aspects of the Confer ence's topic are presented in this booklet. B. LANDHEER December, 1959 TABLE OF CONTENTS· 1. Preface. 3 II. Download or read book Discern e ments written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bilingual collection of essays on the aesthetics of Gilles Deleuze, Discern(e)ments highlights what is at stake in Deleuzian philosophy of art. It traces the reception of Deleuzian thought in a broad range of disciplines and gauges its use-value in each of them. Following the dynamics between structure and becoming that punctuates Deleuzian aesthetics, Discern(e)ments sketches and erases boundaries between methods and traditions in philosophy and art theory, as well as in literary, performance and film studies. Offering both numerous case-studies as well as theoretical outlines, Discern(e)ments engages faculties, disciplines and criticisms not in a mere exchange of points of view, but in heterogenesis mapping out further discernments in Deleuzian aesthetics.
