Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics, or Moral Philosophy It is the end of philosophy to show truth as coming from its first, most absolute, and most universal principles; and it is for ethics to explain the intrinsic and essential constituents of moral action in man, as naturally known to human reason. Among the subjects pertaining to ethics herein discussed, it was deemed expedient, in a work primarily intended for use where all citizens have some voice in political affairs, to examine the nature, properties, and scope of civil law and authority, at as great length as the limits of such a book could becomingly allow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Ethics: An Introduction to Moral Philosophy This manual has been written with a special View to the wants and difficulties of University Extension students, to whom, in the first instance, the sub stance of it was given in a course of lectures. Though attempting to deal with the most recent phases of ethical problems, it does not profess to treat them in an original manner, but merely to apply to their solution ideas which, owing to the labours of the best thinkers of our own time and country, are now common property. Those of my readers who are acquainted with the course of. Modern thought in the field of Moral Philosophy will readily recognise the debt I owe to Kant and Hegel in Germany, and their most distinguished exponents, T. H. Green, and Professor Edward Caird in Great Britain. For those who are as yet beginners in philosophy, my best hope in writing this manual will be realised if they are stimulated by it to apply themselves to these and other perennial sources of philosophic inspiration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason and Conduct: New Bearings in Moral Philosophy In arranging these essays, I have decided not to follow a strict chronological order. Instead, I have divided them into two main groups. The first represents my own successive efforts to find answers to the questions of analytical ethics. The second offers a selection of critical studies of particular works that reflect some of the prevailing winds of doctrine in contemporary moral philosophy and several essays dealing with a variety of topics, historical and substantive as well as methodological, which, at one time or another, have engaged my attention. Taken together, the papers do seem to me to provide a fairly comprehensive survey of a good many of the issues with which moral philosophers are now concerned. However, I most particularly desire not to give the impres sion that without really trying I have somehow managed to construct a new system of moral philosophy. These are new bearings, nothing more. Book Moral Theory

Download or read book Moral Theory written by G. C. Field and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-19 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Theory: An Introduction to Ethics After having suggested some possible criticisms of the theories worked out in these two books, I have then attempted to see whether it would not be possible to arrive at a satis factory positive result by a modification and development of one of them. This occupies the latter part of the book. But all the conclusions in this part are only put forward very tentatively and provisionally. They are intended to stimulate thought and to suggest problems rather than to give a definite solution of them. I owe a debt of gratitude to many friends who have helped me, directly or indirectly, in the preparation of this work. For direct help, I am indebted to my colleague, Prof. Alexander Mair, of this University, with whom I have been able to discuss many of the problems here treated to Mr. W. D. Ross, Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, who has been kind enough to give me his opinions on the chapters on Aristotle, which he read through in manuscript and, above all to Prof. J. H. Muirhead of the University of Birmingham, who has read through the whole of the book in manuscript, and made many valuable comments and suggestions. Mr. J. E. Turner of this University has helped me greatly in the work of correcting the proofs and preparing an index. Of all those who have helped me indirectly, I can say but little. But I must record a special debt of gratitude to my old tutor, Prof. J. A. Smith of Oxford, who first set me on the road to such understanding as I possess of Aristotle, and, through him, of Moral Philosophy in general and to my pupils in four Universities, with whom I have discussed these and kindred subjects, and from whom, in teaching, I have learned more than I can possibly have taught them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science of Moral Philosophy A treatise on Moral Philosophy that does justice to its sub jcet, will, of course, tax to the utmost the powers of the hardest student who attempts fully to fathom the depths, and ascend the heights of thought to which it attains; and at the same time, it will so elucidate that subject, that the ordinary reader who will devote adequate time and attention to its perusal, will it with much interest and profit. Such it has he'en the aim of the author to render the following treat ise. He designed to render it a book for the student, and at the same time, a book for the people. Let not the com mon reader, then, be startled at the intricate questions which epen upon him, as he proceeds. If he masters the subjects discussed, he will never regret the loss of his labor, and let him remember, that he can master them, if he will. This treatise was not prepared the thoughtless, who take up such a work, lance, it may be, at its contents, and then lay it aside, as too eep for them, individuals whose minds oat at random upon the surface of things, without looking seriously into the depths beneath, or to the heights above for the purpose of understanding the great realities within and around them, realities among which they are to have their eternal dwelli place, and who especially never ponder the ques tions, What am I'! Where am I? And Whither am I bound? What ought I to be? What ought I to do? And What will be my destiny, as the consequence of being and doing what I ought, or ought not? It was prepared, on the other hand, for thinkers, into whose hearts wisdom has entered, and unto whose souls knowledge is pleasant. To such it is now commended, with the earnest be e, that they may find the same interest and profit in its study, at the author has found in its preparation.
