Because of this evolution, is there conflict between the two sides of man's nature. Because he is an ammal physi cally, is there war between his physical and his spiritual tendencies. To harmonize this apparent anom aly, by which the aspirations of an angel are linked with the passions of a devrl, has been the primary object of all systems of theology. The existence of these spiritual aspirations indicated the innate purity of the spirit and its primal perfection. That it was, in fact, so prone to fly to the ungoverned selfishness and lust of brutes, indicated a fallen and depraved state. The dogmas growing out of this erroneous view were also dependent on equally false ideas of God. A perfect, infinite and good God, would not create an imperfect man. His creation would be in his own image. Man was far from perfect. His imperfection was the result of sin and wicked ness. As his Creator does not wish him to sin, he sins from choice. His free agency shifts the burden of responsi bility from God to himself. Created perfect, he has sinned by choice, and became depraved through and by means of his own wickedness. He has corrupted himself. To escape the infinite consequences, he must have fa1th in a verbal revelation and a certain scheme of redemption. Immortality is not the result of immutable laws, and has no relation to the constitution of things. Men reared in this belief, when they cast it aside are often unbalanced. In the first part of the book, the author discusses the established view that the Spirit is a material substance which transforms people ontologically by virtue of its physical nature. In order to assess this "Stoic" reading of Paul, the author examines all the passages from the Hebrew Bible, early Judaism, Hellenism and Paul that have been put forward in support of this concept of ethical enabling. He concludes that there is no textual evidence in early Judaism or Paul that the Spirit was conceived as a material substance. Furthermore, none of these or any of the Graeco-Roman writings show that ethical living derives from the transformation of the "substance" of the person that is imbued with a physical Spirit. The second part of the study offers a fresh approach to the ethical work of the Spirit which is based on a relational concept of Paul's theology. Rabens argues that it is primarily through initiating and sustaining an intimate relationship with God the Father, Jesus Christ, and with the community of faith that the Spirit transforms and empowers people for ethical living. The author establishes this thesis on the basis of an exegetical study of a variety of passages from the Pauline corpus. In addition, he demonstrates that Paul lived in a context in which this dynamic of ethical empowering was part of the religious framework of various Jewish groups.

There are endless discussions on burning issues like contraception and abortion which often do not end in any satisfactory conclusion because the general principles for ethical decision are not clear. There is also a polarization between conservatives and progressives which leaves the neutral observer puzzled. This book is written to clarify the basic issues in Christian ethics in an age of secularism and pluralism. Although it can be taken as a treatise on General Moral Theology, this book is addressed to a wider audience than students of theology. It is meant to be a guide to Christian Living according to Vatican II. It seeks to transcend the unfortunate dichotomy between 'moral' and 'spiritual' theology as the Council clearly wanted when it spoke of the subject of moral theology as the Christian vocation of the faithful, and their obligation to bring forth fruit in charity for the life of the world. While discussing the basic principles of Christian ethics, the main preoccupation has been to discover an approach to moral decision that would safeguard all the moral values in a given situation. The ecumenical spirit, common preoccupations, and a shared respect for the Word of God have brought Catholic and Protestant moral theology closer. Hence an effort has been made to have a dialogue with the theologians of the Reformed tradition. The strong influence of Protestant ethical writers on current Catholic moral theology has been brought out.
