One result is the emergence of ethics codes, codes of responsible conduct, and best practice codes designed to win adherence to internationally acceptable norms of conduct on the part of corporations and other organizations interacting in the global market place. This volume looks at these developments with particular focus on five topic areas: respect for human rights, treatment of labor, bribery and corruption, environmental protection, and international finance and the control of money laundering. What is significant about these developments is the emerging emphasis on self-regulation as the primary method for raising standards of corporate conduct. The contributors examine the reasons for the emergence of ethical codes and the phenomenon of self-regulation within the context of globalization and look at the role of national governments, international government institutions and other international organizations in shaping and enforcing them. They also study the implications of these developments for corporate governance and the changing roles of national and international institutions in the regulation of international commerce.

Yet, now, more than ever before, corporations are waking up to the fact that they must adopt codes and implement standards to satisfy the growing demands of an ever-wider and ever-less-trustful spectrum of stakeholders. So, where do companies start? Information overload is nowhere more apparent than in the field of CR. There are millions of pages and web pages written on codes and standards, but most of it is spin: organisations punting to sell their code or standard. The reality is that CR is an emerging field, a new terrain for which maps are much needed, but often imprecise. Each company is different, each with its own challenges, corporate culture, unique set of stakeholders, and management systems. Corporate responsibility is a journey for which, today, there is no single map but a multitude of codes and standards that can be combined in new ways for different journeys. In her many lectures around the world, CSR consultant Deborah Leipziger has been asked the same question over and over again: "What are the best standards for companies seeking to be socially responsible?" The codes in this book cover a wide range of issues, including human rights, labour rights, environmental management, corruption and corporate governance. The book also includes how-to (or process) codes focusing on reporting, stakeholder engagement and assurance. The decay of human moral understanding and the recent scandals due to unethical business practices promoted my interest of multicultural and ethical business. The change in the business ethos and the grey zones emerged due to country differences supported unethical business behaviour. Ethics and moral as defined thousands of years ago by the first philosophers need to be taken seriously again. Especially, by institutions, which have an influence on many people and our environment, as businesses have nowadays. My goal is to illustrate this importance of business ethics and their main instrument, the codes of ethics. Is there really a need for business ethics? If everybody would act morally, why is then everybody talking about ethics in the business context? Following the thoughts of Aristotle s virtue ethics and Kant s categorical imperative, there would be no need of business ethics since everybody would be trustworthy and respect the society and the nature. Recent scandals on the other hand illustrated that ethics and moral are not well-known in enterprises with its main goal of profit maximization and that managers tend to live against the categorical imperative. The debate about the connection between business and ethics started with the birth of modern capitalism and intensified with the industrialisation and globalisation. Capitalistic thoughts, increase of corporations and individualization of humans created opportunistic behaviour, which is incompatible with the moral of values according to Aristotle. The globalization and impact of growing number of stakeholders aggravate the situation of the society s moral understanding. Through NGOs and media pressure and a change in customer s attitudes towards corporate responsibilities the awareness of a missing moral occurred. Multinational enterprises have to face various dilemmas caused by differences in cultures and national laws. Individual and communal-shared ethics even make life within society possible as we know it. Part of this social life is doing business, in form of exchanging goods to fulfil basic needs and to achieve higher levels of satisfaction for oneself and for others. However, to combine moral thinking and acting with today's business activities in a free market economy seems to be counterintuitive. Somehow both notions do not really fit together. Still, Corporate Codes of Ethics exist. This essay consist of two parts. Each part reflects one question or problem that I found worthy of having more light shed on it. The first part answers the question "Why do corporate Codes of Ethics exist?" or "Why do corporations establish corporate Codes of Ethics?" under the basic assumptions, that ethics are 'costly' and therefore against the idea of maximising profit which is predominant in the market ideology. Proving these assumptions is not so easy. First the term ethics will be defined and selected theories which could be the basis for Codes of Ethics will be portrayed. Then it is important to know what kind of morality is underlying the modern market ideology as we know it. Following that a correlation is sought between the market morality and corporate ethics, ending in the insight that corporate morality is costly and, therefore, is against economic intuition. Part one finishes then with a surprisingly simple answer to the question why codes exist. The second part brings the findings of the first part in a broader context. The considered corporation of part one now 'grows' beyond borders and begins to conduct business globally, as a multinational corporation. Its existing set of corporate Codes of Ethics are now confronted with other nations, societies and cultures and, possibly, other ethicities. Whether the company should 'do as the Romans do' or not is the major question of the second part, closely connected to the keywords relativism and universalism. The problems revealed by each approach, and possible solutions to them, will be shown in part two. The conclusion, finally, summarises the findings of the essay briefly, but, moreover, shows further questions and problems that would be worth to explore in the overlapping areas of applied ethics and international management.
