Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics and the Materialist Conception of History Like so many other Marxist publications the present one owes its origin to a special occasion, it arose out of a controversy. The polemic in which I was involved last Autumn with the editors of Vorwarts brought me to touch on the question of their "ethical tendencies." What I said, however, on this point was so often mis-understood by one side, and on the other brought me so many requests to give a more thorough and systematic exposition of my ideas on Ethics, that I felt constrained to attempt at least to give a short sketch of the development of Ethics on the basis of the materialist conception of history. I take as my starting point, consequently, that materialist philosophy which was founded on one side by Marx and Engels, on the other, though in the same spirit, by Joseph Dietzgen. For the results at which I have arrived I alone am responsible. My original intention only got so far as to write an article for the "Neue Zeit" on the subject. We have no adequate history of English Ethics, the attempt has been made in this volume to coverapartofthegroundbytracingtherbeand de velopment of Utilitarianism in England. No one of the writers considered - not even Hume or Mill - is individ ually of such importance for English Ethics as Bishop Butler; but, taken as a whole, Utilitarianism may fairly be regarded as England's most characteristic, if not most important, contribution to the development of ethical theory. This being the case, its history certainly deserves careful and somewhat extended treatment. The author hopes that. Whatever may be the shortcomings of the following chapters, he will not be accused of treating the subject either carelessly or in a partisan spirit The greater partofthematterofthefirst fivechapters basal mdyappeared as aserieaof articles in the Philo W Review (published from May. The remaining chapters of the book appear for the first time, except the first section of the final chapter, as indicated in the text. A paper based upon the manuscript of that part of the chapter was read before the American Psychological Association, at the Baltimore Meeting, December, 1900, and was afterwards printed in the Pbdoroplzr'cal Review. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of a Critical Theory of Ethics While the book is an analysis, in outline, of the main elements of the theory Of ethics rather than a discussion of all possible detailed questions, it will' not be found the less fitted, I hope, to give a student an idea of the main methods and problems of contemporary ethics. Other teachers, indeed, may agree that a general outline is better than a blanket-mortgage spread over and forestalling all the activity of the student's mind. Book The Historical Method in Ethics and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Historical Method in Ethics and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by John Handyside and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Method in Ethics and Other Essays The papers here brought together are all that remains of the work of one of the acutest and most thoughtful of the younger generation of philosophical teachers. Their author fell in the war, being one of those who counted his life a little thing to give in so great a cause. He was thirty-three when he died, and he had pub lished next to nothing in his lifetime. These three essays were found in their present form among his papers. The first and longest was clearly intended for publication, either by itself or as part of a larger work on ethics; the other two bore traces of having been originally prepared for some Philosophical Society, but both would have been sent as articles to the philosophical reviews by any one with a less exacting standard of work than Handyside. The three are now published together, both for their own intrinsic value and as a tribute to his memory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
