Book The Moral Instruction of Children

Download or read book The Moral Instruction of Children written by Felix Adler and published by . This book was released on 2024-04-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Moral Instruction of Children" is a book written by Felix Adler, an influential American philosopher and educator, first published in 1892. The book focuses on the importance of moral education in the upbringing of children and offers practical guidance for parents, teachers, and caregivers on how to instill moral values in young individuals. Adler was a prominent figure in the Ethical Culture movement, which emphasized the importance of ethical living and social justice. Drawing from his experiences as an educator and his philosophical insights, Adler explores various aspects of moral instruction in the book. One of the central themes of "The Moral Instruction of Children" is the idea that moral education should be integrated into every aspect of a child's life, rather than being relegated to formal lessons or lectures. Adler emphasizes the importance of creating a nurturing and supportive environment where children can develop a strong moral compass through everyday experiences, interactions, and examples set by adults. Adler also discusses the role of storytelling, literature, and religious teachings in moral education, advocating for the use of narratives and parables to convey ethical principles in a relatable and engaging manner. He stresses the importance of fostering empathy, integrity, and critical thinking skills in children, encouraging them to reflect on their actions and the consequences of their choices. Furthermore, Adler addresses the challenges and dilemmas that parents and educators may encounter when teaching morals to children, providing practical strategies for addressing ethical conflicts and promoting ethical behavior. Overall, "The Moral Instruction of Children" is a thoughtful and comprehensive guide to moral education, reflecting Adler's belief in the power of ethical living to create a more just and compassionate society. The book remains relevant today as a source of inspiration and guidance for those seeking to instill moral values in the next generation.

Book A Theory of Moral Education

Download or read book A Theory of Moral Education written by Michael Hand and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children must be taught morality. They must be taught to recognise the authority of moral standards and to understand what makes them authoritative. But there’s a problem: the content and justification of morality are matters of reasonable disagreement among reasonable people. This makes it hard to see how educators can secure children’s commitment to moral standards without indoctrinating them. In A Theory of Moral Education, Michael Hand tackles this problem head on. He sets out to show that moral education can and should be fully rational. It is true that many moral standards and justificatory theories are controversial, and educators have an obligation to teach these nondirectively, with the aim of enabling children to form their own considered views. But reasonable moral disagreement does not go all the way down: some basic moral standards are robustly justified, and these should be taught directively, with the aim of bringing children to recognise and understand their authority. This is an original and important contribution to the philosophy of moral education, which lays a new theoretical foundation for the urgent practical task of teaching right from wrong.

Download or read book Caring written by Nel Noddings and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-09-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With numerous examples to supplement her rich theoretical discussion, Nel Noddings builds a compelling philosophical argument for an ethics based on natural caring, as in the care of a mother for her child. In Caring—now updated with a new preface and afterword reflecting on the ongoing relevance of the subject matter—the author provides a wide-ranging consideration of whether organizations, which operate at a remove from the caring relationship, can truly be called ethical. She discusses the extent to which we may truly care for plants, animals, or ideas. Finally, she proposes a realignment of education to encourage and reward not just rationality and trained intelligence, but also enhanced sensitivity in moral matters.
