Chard is a Credente and tells Seth they will one day live in another place; a place called 'The Real World'. One day Seth pulled at his Grandpapa's sleeve and asked, "Grandpapa, what is 'Real'?" "Real is for always," replied Chard. "If something isn't for always, why then it's just not Real." Then Chard placed a strong work-worn hand over Seth's heart as if to place something important there. Seth tilted his head and looked up at his Grandpapa with confused eyes. Would he ever understand? What is 'Real'?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I took a walk on Spaulding's Farm the other afternoon. I saw the setting sun lighting up the opposite side of a stately pine wood. Its golden rays straggled into the aisles of the wood as into some noble hall. I was impressed as if some ancient and altogether admirable and shining family had settled there in that part of the land called Concord, unknown to me,-to whom the sun was servant,-who had not gone into society in the village,-who had not been called on. I saw their park, their pleasure-ground, beyond through the wood, in Spaulding's cranberry-meadow. The pines furnished them with gables as they grew. Their house was not obvious to vision; their trees grew through it. I do not know whether I heard the sounds of a suppressed hilarity or not. They seemed to recline on the sunbeams. They have sons and daughters. They are quite well. The farmer's cart-path, which leads directly through their hall, does not in the least put them out,-as the muddy bottom of a pool is sometimes seen through the reflected skies. They never heard of Spaulding, and do not know that he is their neighbor,-notwithstanding I heard him whistle as he drove his team through the house. Nothing can equal the serenity of their lives.

Book When the Song Left the Sea

Download or read book When the Song Left the Sea written by Kevin Hull and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hector Martin, nearing sixty, has been recently abandoned by a much younger and wildly troubled woman who has left him with a young son. A solitary man whose interests had been whale gazing, Dvorak, and self-study, finds himself, a reluctant father, nearly paralyzed by this unexpected event. We come to our story with the tenderness of a father's "I love you" or a sad, neglected child's first troubling questions. His sister, with dutiful affection, assumes the role of surrogate mother, while her brother, sitting before an empty grave, 'celebrates' the 'death' of his wife, the source of his final betrayal. We learn that while most flee grief, others seek to transform it. We learn, too, that redemption often comes in unimaginable ways. For everyone has a story, and sometimes they overlap and collide.

Book Orientalism Versus Occidentalism

Download or read book Orientalism Versus Occidentalism written by Laetitia Nanquette and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the role of cultural representations and perceptions, such as when Iran is represented in the French media as a rogue state obsessed with its nuclear programme, and when France is portrayed in the Iranian media as a decadent and imperialist country. Here, Laetitia Nanquette examines the functions, processes, and mechanisms of stereotyping and imagining the "other" that have pervaded the literary traditions of France and Iran when writing about each other. She furthermore analyzes Franco-Iranian relations by exploring the literary traditions of this relationship, the ways in which these have affected individual authors, and how they reflect socio-political realities. With themes that feed into popular debates about the nature of Orientalism and Occidentalism, and how the two interact, this book will be vital for researchers of Middle Eastern literature and its relationship with writings from the West, as well as those working on the cultures of the Middle East.

Book The Glory of Hera

  • Author : Philip Elliot Slater
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book The Glory of Hera written by Philip Elliot Slater and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Athenians were "quarrelsome as friends, treacherous as neighbors, brutal as masters, faithless as servants, shallow as lovers--all of which was in part redeemed by their intelligence and creativity." Thus writes Philip Slater in this classic work on narcissism and family relationships in fifth-century Athenian society. Exploring a rich corpus of Greek mythology and drama, he argues that the personalities and social behavior of the gods were neurotic, and that their neurotic conditions must have mirrored the family life of the people who perpetuated their myths. The author traces the issue of narcissism to mother-son relationships, focusing primarily on the literary representation of Hera and the male gods and showing how it related to devalued women raising boys in an ambitious society dominated by men. "The role of homosexuality in society, fatherless families, working mothers, women's status, and violence, male pride, and male bonding--all these find their place in Slater's analysis, so honestly and carefully addressed that we see our own societal dilemmas reflected in archaic mythic narratives all the more clearly."--Richard P. Martin, Princeton University Originally published in 1992.
