Book Invisible Hosts

  • Author : Elizabeth Schleber Lowry
  • Publisher : SUNY Press
  • Release : 2017-08-07
  • ISBN : 1438465998
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Invisible Hosts written by Elizabeth Schleber Lowry and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a rhetorical analysis of female spirit mediums’ autobiographies in the historical and social contexts of Victorian-era America. Invisible Hosts explores how the central tenets of Spiritualism influenced ways in which women conceived of their bodies and their civic responsibilities, arguing that Spiritualist ideologies helped to lay the foundation for the social and political advances made by women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As public figures, female spirit mediums of the Victorian era were often accused of unfeminine (and therefore transgressive) behavior. A rhetorical analysis of nineteenth-century spirit mediums’ autobiographies reveals how these women convinced readers of their authenticity both as respectable women and as psychics. The author argues that these women’s autobiographies reflect an attempt to emulate feminine virtues even as their interpretation and performance of these virtues helped to transform prevailing gender stereotypes. She demonstrates that the social performance central to the production of women’s autobiography is uniquely complicated by Spiritualist ideology. Such complications reveal new information about how women represented themselves, gained agency, and renegotiated nineteenth-century gender roles.

Book My First Encounter with an Angel

Download or read book My First Encounter with an Angel written by Sidney Schwartz and published by . This book was released on 1999-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My First Encounter with an Angel is the first book of the Revelations of Ancient Wisdom - AWAN Speaks series that will illuminate truths about how spirituality, mediumship, and prophecy have been hidden for centuries by Biblical translators and religious rulers. AWAN, the Angel Without A Name contacted the author, Sidney Schwartz, through the person of Carl Hewitt, a well-known trance medium. Who or what AWAN is does not ultimately matter when you read and examine the incredible information that this entity is attempting to teach. During their first encounter, AWAN revealed to the author information about deliberate changes and alterations made in the Bible throughout the centuries based on the need of Church Fathers to suppress the psychic/spiritual development of the masses. The author however, remained theologically adamant and argued with this angel. It was then that AWAN challenged the author to disprove his teachings. Using his skills as a librarian, the author researched extensively, studying over 160 versions of the Bible, only to discover that AWAN was teaching the truth! Upon reading this book, you will begin to see that the Bible is "saturated with metaphysical or mediumistic phenomena of every kind".

Book The Phenomena of Materialisation

Download or read book The Phenomena of Materialisation written by Dr. Douglas M. Baker and published by Baker eBooks Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phenomena of Materialisation: This book describes the work and personal experience of a distinguished, highly qualified researcher into this miss-understood phenomenon. Plenty of photos and laboratory reports are included to make this subject more understandable. Further, the area of fraud is dealt with extensively. When extraordinary things are observed, each eye-witness account assumes importance. Sometimes one witness will fill a gap in his story of events that others have left out. Each person has his own story to tell and this is mine. It is not meant to discredit or negate the observations of others. Other investigators had included doctors and scientists. That impressed me from the beginning. Surgeons from Baragwanath Hospital, Johannesburg, discussed their experiences nonchalantly and openly, comparing events with those described by their friends — anaesthetists, doctors and businessmen. It was plain that they were not only technically skilled men of the world, but also orientated towards the esoteric sciences as well. One would quote an excerpt from "At The Feet Of The Master" and another would answer with a reference to "The Voice Of The Silence". There was no hysteria, no anxiety to impress — all had participated in (rather than observed) materialisation seances, and all held a deep respect for the phenomena that their expert hands had palpated and their trained eyes had seen. And I was one of them. Later, I had opportunities to confirm my first impressions again and again elsewhere in different parts of the globe, as well as to hear the views and opinions expressed by scores of other observers and to examine carefully the evidence of their photographs and testimonies. Some of my own conclusions are more occult or esoteric than those of spiritualists, but they are just as sincere and well intended. The part played by the thousands of sitters at materialisation seances is indispensable. In most instances their patient devotion made phenomena possible. To them I dedicate this book.

Book Making Minimum Wage

Download or read book Making Minimum Wage written by Helen J. Knowles and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Supreme Court’s 1937 decision in West Coast Hotel v. Parrish, upholding the constitutionality of Washington State’s minimum wage law for women, had monumental consequences for all American workers. It also marked a major shift in the Court’s response to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal agenda. In Making Minimum Wage, Helen J. Knowles tells the human story behind this historic case. West Coast Hotel v. Parrish pitted a Washington State hotel against a chambermaid, Elsie Parrish, who claimed that she was owed the state’s minimum wage. The hotel argued that under the concept of “freedom of contract,” the US Constitution allowed it to pay its female workers whatever low wages they were willing to accept. Knowles unpacks the legal complexities of the case while telling the litigants’ stories. Drawing on archival and private materials, including the unpublished memoir of Elsie’s lawyer, C. B. Conner, Knowles exposes the profound courage and resolve of the former chambermaid. Her book reveals why Elsie—who, in her mid-thirties was already a grandmother—was fired from her job at the Cascadian Hotel in Wenatchee, and why she undertook the outsized risk of suing the hotel for back wages. Minimum wage laws are “not an academic question or even a legal one,” Elinore Morehouse Herrick, the New York director of the National Labor Relations Board, said in 1936. Rather, they are “a human problem.” A pioneering analysis that illuminates the life stories behind West Coast Hotel v. Parrish as well as the case’s impact on local, state, and national levels, Making Minimum Wage vividly demonstrates the fundamental truth of Morehouse Herrick’s statement.
