He’s several rungs above the good—right into the fabulous!”—Anne McCaffrey While the warlike and merciless Aenir wreak havoc upon the territory outside the mountain stronghold of the clans, Sigarni, the Hawk Queen, arrives in a parallel version of her own universe through a gate in space and time. Taliesen, last of the gatekeepers, has no idea why she has come. But he knows that heroes are needed and grants her passage into the ravaged land. Only Caswallon—loner, warrior, and thief—realizes the true extent of the danger and the mayhem that his people will come to face. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unconditional Love of Old Charlie What a beautiful and arresting story. In its utter simplicity, it declares and lays bare the unconditional love of the Father. Your words are so wonderfully simple. The one who believes that the truth of life in Christ is a mess of complicated rules and self-dedication will feel they are free-falling into life in the simplicity of these pages and the truth they contain. Thank you for writing it and quoting me. May it reach the multitudes. Blessing is on you and this little book. --Malcolm Smith Unconditional Love International malcolmsmith.org About everyone can relate to having an Old Charlie in their life. It could be a grandmother or a grandfather. Charlie was my first contact with unconditional love, and it took place in Ohio's Appalachian hills. I love the second spring, the beautiful colors of autumn, and the leaves taking on the beauty of flowers as the wind caresses my face, whispering, spring will be here before you know it. The heart of spring reminds me of the beautiful heart of a senior citizen we called Old Charlie. He unconditionally loved five naughty children who lived and worked on a tobacco farm along an old gravel road. He traveled in an old two-wheel lopsided cart, pulled by a grayish-white horse named Rocky. After enjoying this true story, you will agree most people can relate to having an Old Charlie in their life. Remembering the loving heart of this wise gentleman became my motivating force in writing this book. I am presenting this incredible truth and revealing two life-giving treasures that guarantee a more enjoyable now and an encouraging outlook for tomorrow. Every parent or grandparent should make this a gift to your children and grandchildren; we all need to know we are unconditionally loved. --Tommy Hawk Convention Speaker, Author, Pastor, Bible Teacher Tommyhawkministries.com 30

Book excerpt: The Black Hawk War was the final conflict east of the Mississippi River between American Indian communities and the United States regular troops and militia. Exploring the museums, wayside markers and parks relating to that struggle is not just a journey of historic significance through beautiful natural scenery. It is also an amazing convergence of legendary personalities, from Abraham Lincoln to Jefferson Davis. Follow the fallout of the war from the Quad Cities on the Illinois/Iowa border, through the "Trembling Lands" along the Kettle Morraine and into the Driftless Area of southern Wisconsin. Pairing local insight with big-picture perspective, Ben Strand charts an overlooked quadrant of America's frontier heritage.

Book Our Hearts Invented a Place

Download or read book Our Hearts Invented a Place written by Jo-Ann Mort and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We thought we were living in a society of the future, showing how people can live together in a way that the human being is not a product of society where you have to put somebody down so that you are up.... Suddenly we [find] that people want to be more like outside, and we are disappointed." "When people say to me, 'We're so sorry to see what's going on in the kibbutzim because we are losing the most important thing that happened to the State of Israel,' I say to them, 'Listen....' The government lost interest in the kibbutz movement, and we had to find another way. The State of Israel slowly but surely became a normal state, and the pioneers finished their job. We are living in a new era. We have to make the adjustment."—from Our Hearts Invented a Place One of the grand social experiments of modern time, the Israeli kibbutz is today in a state of flux. Created initially to advance Zionism, support national security, and forge a new socialist, communal model, the kibbutzim no longer serve a clear purpose and are struggling financially. In Our Hearts Invented a Place, Jo-Ann Mort and Gary Brenner describe how life on the kibbutz is changing as members seek to adapt to contemporary realities and prepare themselves for the future. Throughout, the authors allow the members' often-impassioned voices—some disillusioned, some optimistic, some pragmatic—to be heard. "The founders [of the kibbutz] had a dream," an Israeli told the authors in one of many interviews they conducted between 2000 and 2002, "[which] they fulfilled... a hundred times." The current generation, he explains, must alter that dream in order for it to survive. After tracing the formidable challenges facing the kibbutzim today, Mort and Brenner compare three distinct models of change as exemplified by three different communities. The first, Gesher Haziv, decided to pursue privatization. The second, Hatzor, is diversifying its economy while creating an extensive social safety net and a system of private wages with progressive taxation. In the third instance, Gan Shmuel is attempting to hold on to the traditional kibbutz model. In closing, the authors address the new-style urban kibbutz. Their book will provide readers with a deeper understanding of the kibbutz—and of Israel itself—during an era of dramatic social, economic, and political change.

Book Art and Beauty in the Heartland

Download or read book Art and Beauty in the Heartland written by Jan Stilson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919 eight Chicago White Sox ballplayers teamed up with gamblers to throw the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. The eight players were banned for life from organized baseball for their involvement in or knowledge of the fix, and because of the scandal the players came to be known as the "Black Sox". One of the "Black Sox" was Charles "Swede" Risberg. Swede Risberg came to Minnesota in 1922 with a team called the Mesaba Range Black Sox and he went on to play for Rochester Minnesota in 1923, 1924 and 1926. Swede also played for Scobey Montana in 1925, Watertown South Dakota in 1926 and 1927, Virden Manitoba Canada in 1929, Jamestown North Dakota in 1929 and 1930, and Sioux Falls South Dakota in 1931 and 1932. This book documents the career of Swede Risberg in semi-professional baseball from June 1922 through the 1932 season with the Sioux Falls Canaries. Although this book presents detailed statistical information on Swede's post White Sox career in semi-professional baseball, the book goes beyond a dry accounting of innings pitched, at bats, and hits. Swede played against many different teams and many different individuals. Some of these teams and individuals are themselves interesting stories. Swede would never have played in games against teams with only African-American players or against integrated teams if he had remained in professional baseball, and Swede would not have played on integrated teams if he had remained in the major leagues. Unfortunately, some of the detail about Swede's career in semi-professional baseball is lost forever as newspaper summaries were sometimes not complete, negatives of pictures have been destroyed, and the people that played the games are gone. Even with these limitations, I hope that you enjoy the story of Swede Risberg's life in semi-professional baseball.
