Book Hieroglyphics A Note upon Ecstasy in Literature

Download or read book Hieroglyphics A Note upon Ecstasy in Literature written by Arthur Machen and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1902, “Hieroglyphics: A Note upon Ecstasy in Literature” is an analysis of the nature of literature by Welsh author Arthur Machan. Within it, Machan concludes that to be 'true' literature, the work must contain or convey a sense of 'ecstasy'. This fascinating volume will appeal to both writers and readers with an interest in Machan's seminal work, and it would make for a worthy addition to collections of allied literature. Arthur Machen (1863 – 1947) was a Welsh author and renowned mystic during the 1890s and early 20th century who garnered literary acclaim for his contributions to the supernatural, horror, and fantasy fiction genres. His seminal novella “The Great God Pan” (1890) has become a classic of horror fiction, with Stephen King describing it as one of the best horror stories ever written in the English language. Other notable fans of his gruesome tales include William Butler Yeats and Arthur Conan Doyle; and his work has been compared to that of Robert Louis Stevenson, Bram Stoker, and Oscar Wilde. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Book Christ the Logos of Creation An Essay in Analogical Metaphysics

Download or read book Christ the Logos of Creation An Essay in Analogical Metaphysics written by John R. Betz and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prologue of the Gospel of John identifies Jesus Christ as the eternal Word or Logos of the Father, who became flesh for the salvation of the world. Yet the world that Christ saves is his world from the beginning, for he is also the Logos of creation, the one “through whom all things were made” (John 1:3). This divinely revealed claim has profound implications not only for theology but also for metaphysics, whose relation to Christian doctrine was undermined over the course of the twentieth century, such that the Christian faith has become an increasingly private affair rather than a credible account of reality and an invitation to participate more fully in it. With Christ, the Logos of Creation, John Betz seeks to recover a Christ-centered, analogical metaphysics and to establish the indispensability of such metaphysics for Christian theology and the Christian vision of reality. In Part I, he dispels the fog of confusion about analogical metaphysics and addresses the ecumenical issues posed by Karl Barth’s famous rejection of the analogia entis. Part II demonstrates how analogical metaphysics helps to explain Christian doctrine and sheds new light on the interrelationship between individual doctrines, including Trinitarian theology, Christology and soteriology, and theological anthropology. In Part III, Betz explores how this analogical perspective can aid in resolving a number of theological disputes, including the metaphysical relationship between nature and grace and the issue of divine humility. Finally, Part IV outlines further directions toward a fully Christological metaphysics that is proportionate both to the challenges of modern theology and the reality of our life in Christ the Logos.

Book Phenomenology Ontopoiesis Retrieving Geo cosmic Horizons of Antiquity

Download or read book Phenomenology Ontopoiesis Retrieving Geo cosmic Horizons of Antiquity written by Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-10 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversy of flux and stasis as the groundwork of reality of Greek ancient philosophy reached its crux in the all encompassing doctrine of the logos by Heraclitus of Ephesus. It centers upon human soul in its role with the cosmos. Philosophy of the Occident corroborating Greek insights with the progress of culture in numerous interpretations (Kant, Kierkegaard, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Ricoeur...), presented in this collection has neglected the cosmic sphere. While contemporary development of science revealed its grounding principles (papers by Grandpierre, Kule and Trutty-Coohill) the ancient logos fully emerges. Thus, logos hitherto hidden in our commerce with earth is revealed in its intertwinings with the cosmos through the trajectories of the phenomenology/ontopoiesis of life (Tymieniecka). The crucial link between the soul and the cosmos, in a new geo-cosmic horizon, is thus being retrieved.

Book The Eisenstein Universe

Download or read book The Eisenstein Universe written by Ian Christie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the decades since he was first hailed by critics and filmmakers around the world, Sergei Eisenstein has assumed many identities. Originally cast as a prophet of revolution and the maestro of montage, and later seen as both a victim of and apologist for Stalin's tyranny, the scale and impact of Eisenstein's legacy has continued to grow. If early research on Eisenstein focused on his directorial work – from the legendary Battleship Potemkin and October to the still-controversial Ivan the Terrible – with time scholars have discovered many other aspects of his multifarious output. In recent years, multimedia exhibitions, access to his vast archive of drawings, and publication of his previously censored theoretical writings have cast Eisenstein in a new light. Deeply engaged with some of the leading thinkers and artists of his own time, Eisenstein remains a focus for many of their successors, contested as well as revered. Over half a century since his death in 1948, an ambitious treatise that he hoped would be his major legacy, Method, has finally been published. Eisenstein's lifelong search for an underlying unity that would link archaic art with film's modernity, individuals with their historic communities, and humans as a species with the universe, may have more appeal than ever today. And among his many thwarted film projects, those set in Mexico and what were once the Soviet Central Asian republics reveal complex and still-intriguing realms of speculation. In this ground-breaking collection, sixteen international scholars explore Eisenstein's prescient engagement with aesthetics, anthropology and psychology, his roots in diverse philosophical traditions, and his gender politics. What emerges has surprising relevance to contemporary media archaeology, intermediality, cognitive science, eco-criticism and queer studies, as well as confirming Eisenstein's prestige within present-day film and audiovisual media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of world religions, as a Sikh it is my belief that there is no other book on world religions that clarifies the areas of revelations and also their limitations in their manifestation on the variety of life and how they justify to establish a real history according to the new concepts of the writer. The fear of death, jealousy, and prejudice are very natural to such religions that lack the blessings of a prophet. With comparison to a complete revelation upon this globe as the Sikh Gurus and their continuous manifestations in life with unselfish kindness and sublimity of martyrdom in variety of horrible trials through our Gurus and Khalsa, which is illumined by the word in book and word in flesh of Gurus, no other religion can compete with it. The greater holy wars of Sikh Gurus and Khalsa are unsurpassable in holy wrath and immeasurable mercy in the history of world religions with comparison to especially the greater holy wars of Islam.
