Download or read book A B C Et Cetera written by Alexander Humez and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 1985 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the Roman alphabet and the people who used it as a medium for the transmission of their civilization. Primarily, this means the Romans and their Italic subjects, speakers of Latin who disseminated the language, and the culture of which it was an expression, throughout Europe and the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. As speakers, readers, and writers of English, we are greatly indebted to the long line of purveyors of Latin in its various forms. When words are borrowed, concepts come with them. So, if we have borrowed a wide variety of Latin words, it follows that we have also borrowed a great deal of the cultural stuff that they encase. This book takes a look at what the authors consider to be some of the more intriguing cultural/linguistic goodies that have crept willy-nilly into the English language over the ages from the Latin cornucopia. - Preamble.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • He’s American royalty. She comes from a troubled past. Is their love story meant to be? This “lively page-turner” (The New York Times) offers a nostalgic, hopelessly romantic escape—from the author of Something Borrowed and The Lies That Bind. “I’m a sucker for an iconic, against-all-odds love story, and Meant to Be truly delivers.”—Tia Williams, author of Seven Days in June “A chic, history-inspired summer read [that] strikes a careful balance between simply retelling the true story of JFK Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette, and crafting an entirely new one.”—Bookreporter The Kingsley family is American royalty, beloved for their military heroics, political service, and unmatched elegance. In 1967, after Joseph S. Kingsley, Jr. is killed in a tragic accident, his charismatic son inherits the weight of that legacy. But Joe III is a free spirit—and a little bit reckless. Despite his best intentions, he has trouble meeting the expectations of a nation, as well as those of his exacting mother, Dottie. Meanwhile, no one ever expected anything of Cate Cooper. She, too, grew up fatherless—and after her mother marries an abusive man, she is forced to fend for herself. After being discovered by a model scout at age sixteen, Cate decides that her looks may be her only ticket out of the cycle of disappointment that her mother has always inhabited. Before too long, Cate’s face is in magazines and on billboards. Yet she feels like a fraud, faking it in a world to which she’s never truly belonged. When Joe and Cate unexpectedly cross paths one afternoon, their connection is instant and intense. But can their relationship survive the glare of the spotlight and the so-called Kingsley curse? In a beautifully written novel that captures a gilded moment in American history, Emily Giffin tells the story of two people searching for belonging and identity, as well as the answer to the question: Are certain love stories meant to be?

Book excerpt: In eight stories, this singular collection of short fiction written over the course of ten years explores the terrain of modern urban life. In reflective, telegraphic prose, Susan Sontag confronts the reader with exposed workings of an impassioned intellect in narratives seamed with many of the themes of her essays—the nature of knowing, our relationship with the past, and the future in an alienated present.
Download or read book Pup Et Cetera written by Derek Updegraff and published by Stephen F. Austin University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derek Updegraff's latest collection of fifteen short stories, Pup! Et cetera, continues his exploration of fictional characters whose lives are fascinating and completely unexpected. Take, for example, the wife who cartwheels and backflips in the living room or the two men in "Husky" who hug and sob and console one another. Consider the man who holds "a bag of ice between his hands because he's the poor bastard who grabbed the hot potato." There is, in this book, a pulse of familiarity in all the strangeness, something to cling to "as sirens rage louder and louder," and "One walks to the door and says, 'Come. Let's make more rock piles instead.'"

Book excerpt: Since starting out as a photographer in the mid-1960s, Boris Mikhailov (b. Kharkov, Ukraine, 1938; lives and works in Kharkov and Berlin) has built a wide-ranging and strikingly multifaceted oeuvre. A virtuoso of his art, he has explored a great variety of ways of using the medium to paint a picture of his immediate surroundings that is as unsparing as it is ironic. The book--which accompanies his largest exhibition in Germany to date--brings together a selection of works that includes the experimental pictures of his early years as well as his most recent photographs created in Berlin.
Download or read book Analysis et Cetera written by Paul H. Rabinowitz and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis, et cetera: Research Papers Published in Honor of Jürgen Moser's 60th Birthday provides a collection of papers dedicated to Jürgen Moser on the occasion of his 60th birthday. This book covers a variety of topics, including Helmholtz equation, algebraic complex integrability, theory of Lie groups, and trigonometric polynomials. Organized into 31 chapters, this book begins with an overview of some basic consequences of the definition of algebraic complete integrability. This text then derives a representation theorem for solutions of the Helmholtz equation. Other chapters consider the integrable generalizations of the Volterra system and explain the dynamical system in the finite-dimensional case. This book discusses as well the global periodic solutions for the planar triple pendulum. The final chapter deals with the problem of deriving the macroscopic conservation laws, or the Euler equations, in accurate fashion from the microscopic equations of classical mechanics. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians.
Download or read book Esoteric Healing Part 1 written by Dr. Douglas M. Baker and published by Baker eBooks Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Esoteric Healing - Part 1: For centuries men have sought healing, and obtained it, long before our methods of treatment were elaborated. The methods used then have remained esoteric or veiled and only the outer shell, mainly nonsensical, has survived for history to ridicule. In centuries to come men will also marvel at how we healed in our own day with so many drugs that were later put on the poison list. Now, for the first time, the field of the esoteric healer is being revealed by scientific devices. This field of operation for the esoteric healer is the etheric body, the vitalising matrix underlying all tissue described by contemporary yogis who, even at this moment, are revealing facts about man's nature which are not only able to be demonstrated in the neurophysiologic laboratories of such esteemed medical establishments as the Meninger Foundation at Topeka and the World Health Organisation, but facts which don't yet exist in our medical, physiology and anatomy textbooks. Animals suffer intense stress but do not die from coronaries, duodenal ulcers and hypertension because of it. Many a man will suffer stress persistently and not die from it. Disciples all suffer stress, but their disciplines enable them to thrive on such situations. Only those who are unable to cope or to receive feedback on their reactions to stress, or are unable to stop thinking about their troubles or believe themselves to be continuously subject to them, go down. The difference between all these is not physical; it is supraphysical. It lies in those realms whose laws are understood, obeyed and used by esoteric healers. After twenty-five years of patient research in the ways of Orthodox Medicine and its esoteric counterpart, I have no reason to change my firm belief that the cause of ninety per cent of all disease lies in the inability of Man to express himself according to the purposes of his own Soul whether he be aware of these purposes or not... the inability to express in his way of life Truth, Beauty and Goodness which, after all, is not saying anything new, for this was the belief of Socrates and Plato twenty-five centuries ago. What will eventually be practised as Preventive Medicine is already established, in great measure, in the daily living of students of esoteric sciences, i.e. care about diet and nutrition, breathing exercises, relaxation and meditation.
