  • Pages : 564 pages

Book excerpt: 'Living on the Edge' examines the function of the Sahel region of Africa as an important wintering area for long-distance migrant birds. It describes the challenges the birds have to cope with – climate change, of course, and rapid man-made habitat changes related to deforestation, irrigation and reclamation of wetlands. How have all these changes affected the birds, and have birds adapted to these changes? Can we explain the changing numbers of breeding birds in Europe by changes in the Sahel, or vice versa? Winner of the BB/BTO Best Bird Book Award 2010 The Jury commented: "It is a tremendous book in every department. It marks a step-change in our knowledge of the ecology of this critically important region in the European-African migration system and of the many species (familiar to us on their breeding grounds) that winter there. The authors combine the latest scientific information with vivid descriptions of landscapes and animals. Their book is richly illustrated with large numbers of drawings, maps and photographs by acclaimed experts. The wealth of coloured graphics has been particularly well thought out and encourages readers to delve into the figures and learn more about the region, rather than having the (all-too-common) opposite effect. Summing up, the jury praises not just the high quality of the texts, the information and the illustrations, but also the sheer pleasure of reading the book: "One of the key attributes of a good book is to be able to grip the reader's attention and transport him or her to another place. We feel confident that [Living on the edge] will have that effect."

Book Syndrome de Fatigue Chronique Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Download or read book Syndrome de Fatigue Chronique Chronic Fatigue Syndrome written by Georges Serratrice and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Disaster Death and the Emotions in the Shadow of the Apocalypse 1400 1700

Download or read book Disaster Death and the Emotions in the Shadow of the Apocalypse 1400 1700 written by Jennifer Spinks and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late medieval and early modern Europe, textual and visual records of disaster and mass death allow us to encounter the intense emotions generated through the religious, providential and apocalyptic frameworks that provided these events with meaning. This collection brings together historians, art historians, and literary specialists in a cross-disciplinary collection shaped by new developments in the history of emotions. It offers a rich range of analytical frameworks and case studies, from the emotional language of divine providence to individual and communal experiences of disaster. Geographically wide-ranging, the collection also analyses many different sorts of media: from letters and diaries to broadsheets and paintings. Through these and other historical records, the contributors examine how communities and individuals experienced, responded to, recorded and managed the emotional dynamics and trauma created by dramatic events like massacres, floods, fires, earthquakes and plagues.

Book Tibet le pays sacrifi

    Book Details:
  • Author : Claude Arpi
  • Publisher : Bouquineo
  • Release : 2011-02-21
  • ISBN : 2313002128
  • Pages : 492 pages

Download or read book Tibet le pays sacrifi written by Claude Arpi and published by Bouquineo. This book was released on 2011-02-21 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
