Book excerpt: Engelhardt enters the world of Orthodox Christianity in Estonia to explore the significance of musical style in worship, cultural identity, and social imagination. Through a series of ethnographic and historical chapters, the book focuses on how Orthodox Estonians give voice to the religious absolute in secular society to live Christ-like lives. Approaching Orthodoxy through local understandings of correct practice and correct belief, this work describes how religious knowledge, national identity, and social transformation were articulated in the work of singing not just any way, but the right way.

Book Estonia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alexander Theroux
  • Publisher : Fantagraphics Books
  • Release : 2011-11-21
  • ISBN : 1606994654
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Estonia written by Alexander Theroux and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any journey with Alexander Theroux is an education. Possessed of a razor-sharp and hyperliterate mind, he stands beside Thomas Pynchon as one of the sharpest cultural commentators of our time. So when he decided to accompany his wife ― the artist Sarah Son-Theroux ― on her Fulbright Scholarship to Estonia, it occasioned this penetrating examination of a country that, for many, seems alien and distanced from the modern world. For Theroux, the country and its people become a puzzle. His fascination with their language, manners, and legacy of occupation and subordination lead him to a revelatory examination of Estonia’s peculiar place in European history. All the while, his trademark acrobatic allusions, quotations, and digressions ― which take us fromHamlet through Jean Cocteau to Married… with Children ― render his travels as much internal and psychical as they are external and physical. Through these obsessive references to Western culture, we come to appreciate how insular the country has become, yet also marvel at its fierce individuality and preternatural beauty ― such is the skill of Theroux’s gaze. This travelogue of his nine months abroad also brims with anecdotes of Theroux’s encounters with Estonian people and ― in some of its most bitterly comedic episodes ― his fellow Americans whom he at times feels more alienated from than the frosty, humorless Europeans. Estonia: A Ramble Through the Periphery is as biting and satirical as it is witty and urbane; as curious and lyrical as it is brash and irreverent. It marks a new highlight in an already stellar career and a book that continues Fantagraphics’ exceptional line of prose works.

Book Constructing Post Soviet Geopolitics in Estonia

Download or read book Constructing Post Soviet Geopolitics in Estonia written by Pami Aalto and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the construction of post-Soviet political space, geopolitical discourses and boundaries in Estonia. Making use of innovative methodological solutions such as Q-methodology, its analysis includes in-depth interviews that elucidate a variety of issues through human experience and subjective perception, such as Estonian-Russian border disputes of the 1990s, inter-ethnic issues and national integration and security. As Estonia is one of the frontline EU accession countries and is queuing for membership of NATO, the book raises broad questions of post-Soviet geopolitics in the Baltic region and across Europe. Indeed, Pami Aalto argues that small states such as Estonia should be understood as active participants in post-Soviet and European geopolitics, and not simply pawns in a superpower environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estonia is known as the "singing nation" because its people sang their way to freedom. In 1991, masses of singing protesters secured this small Baltic nation's independence from the Soviet Union. For nearly a thousand years, Estonia was occupied by foreign powers, traded back and forth by its more powerful neighbors of Germany, Sweden, and Russia. In the nearly thirty years since its independence from the Soviet Union, Estonia has become an international leader in digital technology while continuing to grow its powerful musical traditions. Readers explore Estonia's history of courage, defiance, and imagination in this book, which features vibrant images, intriguing quotes, and surprising sidebars.

Book Challenges to European Welfare Systems

Download or read book Challenges to European Welfare Systems written by Klaus Schubert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-08 with total page 863 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive analyses of the challenges all European welfare systems have been facing since 2007, combining in-depth country-based studies and comparative chapters. It focuses on: 1) the economic and financial crisis, 2) demographic change, and 3) the balance between avoiding risks and opening up opportunities in social policy. The results show that European welfare systems tend to face the same challenges in different ways and that also their responses to those challenges differ considerably. Although the EU also plays a part in shaping national welfare systems, it becomes evident that European welfare systems are by no means converging: in terms of social policy, national diversity within Europe is still a major factor that will shape future developments in European welfare systems.

Book Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Powered Public Service Delivery in Estonia

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Powered Public Service Delivery in Estonia written by Martin Ebers and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive overview of the state of Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially machine learning (ML) applications in public service delivery in Estonia, discussing the manifold ethical and legal issues that arise under both European and Estonian law. Final conclusions and recommendations set out and analyze various policy options for the public sector, taking into account recent developments at the European level – such as the AIA proposal – as well as the experience of countries that have issued principles and guidelines or even laws for the use of ML in the public sector. “For two reasons, this study is relevant not only for an audience which is interested in Estonian administrative law. First, the authors base their legal analysis primarily on EU law and provide a state of the art-analysis of the relevant secondary legislation. This makes the book a reference text for the European debate on public sector AI governance. Second, this study is part of a larger research project in which four specific use cases of public sector AI have been developed and tested. The practical insights gained in these projects have provided the authors with an excellent understanding of the opportunities and risks of the technology, which distinguishes this legal analysis from similar enterprises.” Excerpt from the foreword by Professor Thomas Wischmeyer (University of Bielefeld)

Book My Estonia Passport Forgery Meat Jelly Eaters and Other Stories

Download or read book My Estonia Passport Forgery Meat Jelly Eaters and Other Stories written by Justin Petrone and published by . This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people have said this book is romantic and maybe it is: a young lost American college grad falls in love with an intriguing European journalist and embarks on a journey that restores his faith in himself and the world. Sure, it is romantic. But it was never easy. A foreigner arrives in the middle of a dark winter and must survive in Estonia, the "least fortunate Scandinavian country," a land where people eat blood sausage and jellied meat, drink warm bread, and are always on time; a place where every family is haunted by the past and is struggling to catch up to the present. Over the course of one year, so much happens in this tiny northern land that it stops being foreign. Estonia and the college grad turned journalist become intimately acquianted. Inseparable. And in the end, he comes to love it, even when they do not want to let him back into their country.

Book Estonia

Download or read book Estonia written by Jean-Jacques Subrenat and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2004 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the span of only seventy years, Estonia first proclaimed its independence, was occupied and deprived of its sovereignty, saw many of its citizens deported, and yet managed to recover its independence. How did this small nation keep its language and traditions alive during half a century of occupation, and how did it maintain such a vivid sense of identity? For the first time in English, this book gives a comprehensive view of the events which shaped the destiny of contemporary Estonia. The Editor, Jean-Jacques Subrenat, has called upon an unusually broad spectrum of the best experts (in history, archeology, political science, genetics, literature), but also on some of the leaders who took part in the rebuilding of Estonia, to offer more than a history, rather a unique testimony on a nation reborn. Estonia: Identity and Independence provides rare insight into the many aspects of a country whose location in Northern Europe, within the European Union, and as a NATO ally, but also as a close neighbour of Russia, deserves the attention of scholars, journalists, and informed readers today. This volume includes a thorough chronology of Estonia (from prehistory to accession to the European Union), and a brief c.v. of each co-author. Estonia: Identity and Independence is also available in three other languages (A. Bertricau is the pen-name of Jean-Jacques Subrenat, the initiator and Editor of this book): Estonian: 1st and 2nd edition: A. Bertricau, "Eesti identiteet ja iseseisvus," published by Avita in Tallinn, 2001 and 2002; Russian: A. Bertricau, "Samoopredelenie i nezavissimost' Estonii," published by Avita in Tallinn, August 2001; French: A. Bertricau, "Estonie, identite et independance," published by L'Harmattan in Paris, November 2001.
