Book Method for Calculating the Rolling and Yawing Moments Due to Rolling for Unswept Wings with Or Without Flaps Or Ailerons by Use of Nonlinear Section Lift Data

Download or read book Method for Calculating the Rolling and Yawing Moments Due to Rolling for Unswept Wings with Or Without Flaps Or Ailerons by Use of Nonlinear Section Lift Data written by Albert P. Martina and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The methods of NACA Reports 865 and 1090 have been applied to the calculation of the rolling- and yawing-moment coefficients due to rolling for unswept wings with or without flaps or ailerons. The methods allow the use of nonlinear section lift data together with lifting-line theory. Two calculated examples are presented in simplified computing forms in order to illustrate the procedures involved.

Book Behavior of Materials Under Conditions of Thermal Stress

Download or read book Behavior of Materials Under Conditions of Thermal Stress written by S. S. Manson and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is presented of available information on the behavior of brittle and ductile materials under conditions of thermal stress and thermal shock. For brittle materials, a simple formula relating physical properties to thermal-shock resistance are derived and used to determine the relative significance of two indices currently in use for rating materials. The importance of simulating operating conditions in thermal-shock testing is deduced from the formula and is experimentally illustrated by showing that BeO could be both inferior or superior to Al2O3 in thermal shock depending on the testing conditions. For ductile materials, thermal-shock resistance depends upon the complex interrelation among several metallurgical variables which seriously affect strength and ductility. These variables are briefly discussed and illustrated from literature sources. The importance of simulating operating conditions in tests for rating ductile materials is especially to be emphasized because of the importance of testing conditions in metallurgy. A number of practical methods that have been used to minimize the deleterious effects of thermal stress and thermal shock are outlined.

Book Wind tunnel Investigation of Effect of Sweep on Rolling Derivatives at Angles of Attack Up to 13 and at High Subsonic Mach Numbers Including a Semiempirical Method of Estimating the Rolling Derivatives

Download or read book Wind tunnel Investigation of Effect of Sweep on Rolling Derivatives at Angles of Attack Up to 13 and at High Subsonic Mach Numbers Including a Semiempirical Method of Estimating the Rolling Derivatives written by James W. Wiggins and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was performed in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel in order to determine the rolling derivatives for swept-wing-body configurations at angles of attack from 0 degrees to 13 degrees and at high subsonic Mach numbers. The wings had sweep angles of 3.6 degrees, 32.6 degrees, 45 degrees, and 60 degrees at the quarter-chord line, an aspect ratio of 4, a taper ratio of 0.6, and an NACA 65A006 airfoil section parallel to the free stream. The results indicate a reduction in the damping-in-roll derivative at the higher test angles of attack. Of the wings tested, instability of the damping-in-roll derivative was experienced over the largest ranges of angle of attack and Mach number for the 32.6 sweptback wing.

Book Analytical Investigation of Acceleration Restrictiion in a Fighter Airplane with an Automatic Control System

Download or read book Analytical Investigation of Acceleration Restrictiion in a Fighter Airplane with an Automatic Control System written by James T. Matthews and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical analysis was made to investigate the performance and acceleration-restriction capabilities of a normal-acceleration command control system in a fighter airplane. Several combinations of pitching velocity and pitching acceleration were investigated as feedback quantities in combination with normal acceleration.

Book Effect of Aspect Ratio and Sweepback on the Low speed Lateral Control Characteristics of Untapered Low aspect ratio Wings Equipped with Retractable Ailerons

Download or read book Effect of Aspect Ratio and Sweepback on the Low speed Lateral Control Characteristics of Untapered Low aspect ratio Wings Equipped with Retractable Ailerons written by Jack Fischel and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results and discussion are presented of a low-speed lateral-control investigation of three untapered unswept wings of aspect ratio 1.13, 2.13, and 4.13 and an untapered 45 degrees sweptback wing of aspect ratio 2.09 equipped with 0.60-semispan retractable ailerons having various projections. Continuous-span ailerons were tested at outboard stations on the unswept wings, and plain (continuous span) and stepped (segmented) ailerons were tested at various spanwise stations with and without simulated actuating arms on the sweptback wing.
