Book excerpt: A Lagrangian particle model was applied to estimating emission strength and air pollutant concentrations specifically for the short-range dispersion of an air pollutant in the atmospheric boundary layer. The model performance was evaluated with experimental data. The model was then used as the platform of parametric uncertainty analysis, in which effects of uncertainties in five parameters (Monin-Obukhov length, friction velocity, roughness height, mixing height, and the universal constant of the random component) of the model on mean ground-level concentrations were examined under slightly and moderately stable conditions. The analysis was performed under a probabilistic framework using Monte Carlo simulations with Latin hypercube sampling and linear regression modeling. In addition, four studies related to the Lagrangian particle modeling was included. They are an alternative technique of formulating joint probability density functions of velocity for atmospheric turbulence based on the Koehler-Symanowski technique, analysis of local increments in a multidimensional single-particle Lagrangian particle model using the algebra of Ito integrals and the Wagner-Platen formula, analogy between the diffusion limit of Lagrangian particle models and the classical theory of turbulent diffusion, and evaluation of some proposed forms of the Lagrangian velocity autocorrelation of turbulence.

Relief, for the completion of a project that has taken too many of my evenings and weekends and that, in the last several months, has become almost an obsession. Satisfaction, for the optimistic feeling that this book, in spite of its many shortcomings and imbalances, will be of some help to the air pollution scientific community. Frustration, for the impossibility of incorporating newly available material that would require another major review of several key chap ters - an effort that is currently beyond my energies but not beyond my desires. The first canovaccio of this book came out in 1980 when I was invited by Computational Mechanics in the United Kingdom to give my first Air Pollution Modeling course. The course material, in the form of transparencies, expanded, year after year, thus providing a growing working basis. In 1985, the ECC Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy, asked me to prepare a critical survey of mathe matical models of atmospheric pollution, transport and deposition. This support gave me the opportunity to prepare a sort of "first draft" of the book, which I expanded in the following years.

Book excerpt: About fifteen years ago Henning Rodhe and I disscussed the calculation of residence times, or lifetimes, of certain air pollutants for the first time. He was interested in pollutants which were mainly removed from the atmosphere by precipitation scavenging. His idea was to base the calculation on statistical models for the variation of the precipitation i~tensity and not only on the average precipitation intensity. In order to illustrate the importance of taking the variation into account we considered a simple model - here called the Markov model - for the precipitation intensity and computed the distribution of the residence time of an aerosol particle. Our expression for the average residence time - here formula (13- was rather much used by meteorologists. Certainly we were pleased, but while our ambition had been to provide an illustration, our work was merely understood as a proposal for a realistic model. Therefore we found it natural to search for more general models. The mathematical problems involved were the origin of my interest in this field. A brief outline of the background, purpose and content of this paper is given in section 1. Book excerpt: Chronic exposure to high concentrations of pollutants such as NO[subscript 2] and ultrafine particles is associated with negative health effects. Studies of exposure to these pollutants require estimates of concentrations at temporal and spatial scales relevant to exposure calculations. We have developed and applied methods to construct these concentration "maps" by using a combination of measurements and modeled results. To estimate concentration patterns at the urban scale of tens of kilometers we have formulated a Lagrangian model to estimate concentrations of NO[subscript x], NO[subscript 2], and O[subscript 3] over a domain extending over hundreds of kilometers. The model is evaluated with data collected at 21 regional monitoring stations in the San Joaquin Valley Air Basin during 2005. The model provides adequate descriptions of the spatial and temporal variation of concentrations of NO[superscript 2], and NO[superscript x] . We then use "residual" Kriging to combine the results from the dispersion model with observed concentrations to produce realistic concentration maps.
