Book Estimation and Confidence Intervals for Quantal Response Or Sensitivity Data

Download or read book Estimation and Confidence Intervals for Quantal Response Or Sensitivity Data written by Guy Burton Seibert (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If different levels of stimuli are applied and then counts are made of the number reacting and not-reacting to the stimuli, a sensitivity analysis is usually the best analysis to be applied. Sensitivity analysis may be used to determine the probability of destroying a target with different size bombs, without the necessity of actually having data on all the different sizes. It may also be used in determining the effect of a drug on a patient or the effect of polution on a body of water. This paper is concerned with a generalized model for sensitivity analysis based on the Burr distribution. This generalization gives a model that will fit quite well data that comes from probit or logit models, but also covers many additional situations that the probit or logit models would not fit. A FORTRAN IV program is included for doing the analysis on a computer. Confidence intervals for any quantile are also given. (Author).

Book Science and Decisions

Download or read book Science and Decisions written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-24 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk assessment has become a dominant public policy tool for making choices, based on limited resources, to protect public health and the environment. It has been instrumental to the mission of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as other federal agencies in evaluating public health concerns, informing regulatory and technological decisions, prioritizing research needs and funding, and in developing approaches for cost-benefit analysis. However, risk assessment is at a crossroads. Despite advances in the field, risk assessment faces a number of significant challenges including lengthy delays in making complex decisions; lack of data leading to significant uncertainty in risk assessments; and many chemicals in the marketplace that have not been evaluated and emerging agents requiring assessment. Science and Decisions makes practical scientific and technical recommendations to address these challenges. This book is a complement to the widely used 1983 National Academies book, Risk Assessment in the Federal Government (also known as the Red Book). The earlier book established a framework for the concepts and conduct of risk assessment that has been adopted by numerous expert committees, regulatory agencies, and public health institutions. The new book embeds these concepts within a broader framework for risk-based decision-making. Together, these are essential references for those working in the regulatory and public health fields.

Book Human and Ecological Risk Assessment

Download or read book Human and Ecological Risk Assessment written by Dennis J. Paustenbach and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 1319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understand the fundamentals of human risk assessment with this introduction and reference Human risk assessments are a precondition for virtually all industrial action or environmental regulation, all the more essential in a world where chemical and environmental hazards are becoming more abundant. These documents catalog potential environmental, toxicological, ecological, or other harms resulting from a particular hazard, from chemical spills to construction projects to dangerous workplaces. They turn on a number of variables, of which the most significant is the degree of human exposure to the hazardous agent or process. Human and Ecological Risk Assessment combines the virtues of a textbook and reference work to introduce and analyze these vital documents. Beginning with the foundational theory of human health risk assessment, it then supplies case studies and detailed analysis illustrating the practice of producing risk assessment documents. Fully updated and authored by leading authorities in the field, the result is an indispensable work. Readers of the second edition of Human and Ecological Risk Assessment will also find: Over 40 entirely new case studies reflecting the latest in risk assessment practice Detailed discussion of hazards including air emissions, contaminated food and soil, hazardous waste sites, and many more Case studies from multiple countries to reflect diverse international standards Human and Ecological Risk Assessment is ideal for professionals and advanced graduate students in toxicology, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, environmental science, and all related subjects.

Book Statistical Analysis of Ecotoxicity Studies

Download or read book Statistical Analysis of Ecotoxicity Studies written by John W. Green and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the issues relevant to the design, analysis, and interpretation of toxicity studies that examine chemicals for use in the environment Statistical Analysis of Ecotoxicity Studies offers a guide to the design, analysis, and interpretation of a range of experiments that are used to assess the toxicity of chemicals. While the book highlights ecotoxicity studies, the methods presented are applicable to the broad range of toxicity studies. The text contains myriad datasets (from laboratory and field research) that clearly illustrate the book's topics. The datasets reveal the techniques, pitfalls, and precautions derived from these studies. The text includes information on recently developed methods for the analysis of severity scores and other ordered responses, as well as extensive power studies of competing tests and computer simulation studies of regression models that offer an understanding of the sensitivity (or lack thereof) of various methods and the quality of parameter estimates from regression models. The authors also discuss the regulatory process indicating how test guidelines are developed and review the statistical methodology in current or pending OECD and USEPA ecotoxicity guidelines. This important guide: Offers the information needed for the design and analysis to a wide array of ecotoxicity experiments and to the development of international test guidelines used to assess the toxicity of chemicals Contains a thorough examination of the statistical issues that arise in toxicity studies, especially ecotoxicity Includes an introduction to toxicity experiments and statistical analysis basics Includes programs in R and excel Covers the analysis of continuous and Quantal data, analysis of data as well as Regulatory Issues Presents additional topics (Mesocosm and Microplate experiments, mixtures of chemicals, benchmark dose models, and limit tests) as well as software Written for directors, scientists, regulators, and technicians, Statistical Analysis of Ecotoxicity Studies provides a sound understanding of the technical and practical issues in designing, analyzing, and interpreting toxicity studies to support or challenge chemicals for use in the environment.

Book A TEXTBOOK OF APPLIED TOXICOLOGY

Download or read book A TEXTBOOK OF APPLIED TOXICOLOGY written by DR. MUNEESH KUMAR and published by DARSHAN PUBLISHERS. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to applied toxicology and is designed primarily for Post graduate students and Research scholars. Now days the whole world is facing a pandemic of the most dreaded human disease caused by toxicants. Therefore study of applied toxicology serves society in many ways, not only to protect humans and the environment from the deleterious effects of toxicants but also to facilitate the development of more selective toxicants such as anticancer and other clinical drugs and pesticides. In chapters covering rapidly expanding matter, the usually required material has been presented in a fairly concise form, and then details on special aspects have been given in the form of addenda. It is hoped that this approach will meet the needs of Post graduate students, Research scholars and provide sources for more advanced study. Efforts have been made to include the latest available information in some chapters to make the book upto-date. The constructive suggestion from the conscious readers is always cordially invited for further improvement of the book. The study of toxic action from the use of biochemical and molecular techniques can be expected. No doubt new techniques will be developed, answers will be found to many questions that did not yield to earlier techniques and new questions will be raised. The challenge, as always, will be to integrate the results from these studies and reach new levels of sophistication into useful and productive approaches to reduce chemical effects on human health and the environment.
