Book excerpt: "As part of a leadership research program at the U.S. Military Academy involving cadets in the Class of 1998, this report examined the viability of using archival data on prior cadets to estimate a variety of personality constructs among current cadets. Two sets of archival personality data on prior cadet classes were obtained. The first involved a short form administration of the ABLE inventory to cadets in the Class of 1994. The second involved the administration of the NEO Personality Inventory to the Class of 1996. Scores on the 12 scales contained in these inventories were used as archival criteria. Archival predictors were then sought from other and questionnaire items administered to cadets at the same point in time as the original inventories. For each scale, a different 20-item pool of predictors was developed from the archival items having the strongest zero order correlations with that scale. A series of multiple regression analyses was then used to predict scores on each scale. An average R2 of .39 per scale was obtained after cross validation. Both the original scales and their analogs tended to manifest similar relationships with two external criteria examined, leadership performance and attrition.--DTIC.

This effort applied the analog approach for empirically deriving and validating measures in order to expand the value of the archive for longitudinal research on organizational commitment. Accordingly, an expert panel selected 13 questionnaire items that fit with the content domains of Meyer and Allen's (1991) affective commitment (AC) and continuance commitment (CC). It was expected that the average of responses to the items selected for a construct could serve as an analog scale for measuring the construct. To test this, the original Meyer and Allen items and the candidate analog items were administered to 404 Army officers. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that responses to the analog and original items defined dimensions representing AC and CC. Correlations of analog scale scores with rank and career intent were also similar to those obtained for the original scales. Use of the validated analog scales links findings from the Army archive to the wider research on organizational commitment and increases the certainty and applicability of these findings."--DTIC.

Currently, BOLDS consists of data accumulated on USMA cadets from the Class of 1998. The measures in the database represent ten broad dimensions relevant to leader development: cognitive aptitude, complex problem-solving skills, tacit knowledge of military leadership, temperament, motivation, leadership style, leadership performance, physical fitness, cognitive-emotional identity development, and developmental experiences. This report identifies all of the measures included in BOLDS and describes their psychometric properties. Such documentation is essential to facilitate utilization of the database and to inform future data collections, which are scheduled to track this officer cohort throughout their military careers and to expand BOLDS to officers from other commissioning sources.

Book excerpt: During the Cold War, the U.S. government began testing paranormal claims under laboratory conditions in hopes of realizing intelligence applications for psychic phenomena. Thus began the project known as Star Gate. The largest in the history of parapsychological research, it received more than $20 million in funding and continued into the mid–1990s. This project archive includes all available documents generated by research contractor SRI International and those provided by government officials. Remote viewing (RV) is an atypical ability that allows some individuals to gain information blocked from the usual senses by shielding, distance or time. During the final decade of Star Gate, the emphasis shifted to a support role of a government in-house psychic spying unit at Ft. Meade, MD, and to engage a number of full-time scientists to investigate the physical and biological properties of RV, which proved successful. Results included how to identify the RV-gifted, what constitutes an RV target, some correlations with parts of the nervous system, and an indication of a potential 6th sense.
