Book Estimating Numbers of Campers on Unsupervised Campgrounds

Download or read book Estimating Numbers of Campers on Unsupervised Campgrounds written by J. Alan Wagar and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Sampling procedures that incorporate regression or ratio techniques look especially promising. When these techniques are used, area-wide fluctuations in campground attendance do not necessarily increase sampling error. Within a large sampling areafor example, in a National Forestthe numbers of campers on many campgrounds may rise and fall in uniform response to such diverse factors as weather, day of the week, vacation periods, insect activity, and fishing seasons. Where this common pattern exists, the number of campers on a sample group of campgrounds may be related to campers on all campgrounds by regression and ratio techniques. To test these techniques, a study was made on the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire from July 10 to September 10, 1961.S3.

Book Monitoring Visitor Use in Backcountry and Wilderness

Download or read book Monitoring Visitor Use in Backcountry and Wilderness written by Steven J. Hollenhorst and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obtaining accurate and usable visitor counts in backcountry and wilderness settings continues to be problematic for resource managers because use of these areas is dispersed and costs can be prohibitively high. An overview of the available methods for obtaining reliable data on recreation use levels is provided. Monitoring methods were compared and selection criteria were developed based on units of measure, efficiency and affordability, validity and reliability, and compatibility with agency objectives. Using these selection criteria, some general recommendations of methods for monitoring visitor use in wilderness and backcountry were derived. Permit methods offer the benefit of obtaining extensive and accurate use data, but have high administrative costs and are inconvenient for visitors. Registration techniques provide extensive data and are particularly applicable where rationing use is not a management objective. Permit and registration techniques, however, do require considerable resources to validate for visitor noncompliance. Indirect counts with electronic or mechanical devices in combination with self-report surveys or self-registration meet most management and research needs by providing data on total use and meaningful information about the type of use. Proper study design controlling for sampling bias can make this combined approach an attractive alternative.

Book Measuring Soil and Tree Temperatures During Prescribed Fires with Thermocouple Probes

Download or read book Measuring Soil and Tree Temperatures During Prescribed Fires with Thermocouple Probes written by Stephen S. Sackett and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil and cambium temperatures must be known to ascertain certain effects of prescribed fires on trees. Thermocouple-based systems were devised for measuring soil and cambium temperatures during prescribed fires. The systems, which incorporate both commercially available and custom components, perform three basic functions: data collection, data retrieval, and data translation. Although the systems and procedures for using them were designed for research purposes, they could be adapted for monitoring operational prescribed fires.
