Book excerpt: This paper highlights the likelihood of overestimating canopy cover using any airborne imagerywith particular focus on National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery. This study compared canopy-cover estimates from NAIP imagery and resource photography acquired during the same year. Four sites were selected based on a visual evaluation of apparent canopy-cover differences between the two types of imagery and used to estimate tree canopy cover. The estimates of canopy cover samples from NAIP imagery were about 45 percent higher than those collected from resource photography. Because NAIP is the only high-resolution digital imagery available over the contiguous U.S. (and is streamed via Image Server to all Forest Service personnel), it is an important resource for forest mapping, planning, and monitoring. However, it does have limitations, specifically estimating canopy cover. The results from this investigation need to be considered before deciding to use NAIP imagery to determine tree canopy cover."

This thesis investigated the influence of various forest attributes on the spectral reflectance over time and view direction. The Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) is aboard the ESA PROBA satellite. The revisits of the CHRIS multi-angle images have been used to improve the accuracies of forest species recognition and stand densities compared to a nadir view only. Multi-angle data for CHRIS analysis of forest species produced higher accuracy and were easier to obtain than multi-date date. 5-Scale, a radiative transfer model, and CHRIS data have been compared as inputs into Partial Least Squares (PLS), a fullspectrum analytical method that offers relations between forest stand parameters and the resulting spectra. The resulting coefficients highlight where (view angle and spectral regions) within the multi-angle spectra contributed to estimating the various forest parameters. Methodology of collecting spectral calibration data in the field and the unique pre-processing challenges have been described.

Book excerpt: Estimating timber volume from a field perspective, with field plots occasionally falling within remote and inaccessible areas, can be a costly and timely endeavor. Remote sensing, with its ability to record information at both the local and regional scale, offers an alternative to traditional field based measurements. Studies have shown that remotely sensed vegetation biomass indices (e.g. NDVI) derived from mid-spatial resolution digital imagery (e.g. Landsat TM, 30-meters), after being corrected for atmospheric effects, topographical differences and shadow, were highly correlated with timber volume. With the recent advent of high spatial resolution digital imagery from the IKONOS and QuickBird satellites providing more textural information about a forest canopy, with spatial resolutions of 4 meters and 2.44 meters for multispectral data respectively, the opportunity to assess forest volume from a distance at a much finer scale has increased. Additionally Lidar (light detection and ranging) is a relatively new remote sensing technology that can accurately estimate the 3-dimensional structure of forest vegetation which is related to forest volume and offers an alternative to ground based measurement of remotely sensed multispectral data.

Book excerpt: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are new platforms that have been increasingly used in the last few years for forestry applications that benefit from the added value of flexibility, low cost, reliability, autonomy, and capability of timely provision of high-resolution data. The main adopted image-based technologies are RGB, multispectral, and thermal infrared. LiDAR sensors are becoming commonly used to improve the estimation of relevant plant traits. In comparison with other permanent ecosystems, forests are particularly affected by climatic changes due to the longevity of the trees, and the primary objective is the conservation and protection of forests. Nevertheless, forestry and agriculture involve the cultivation of renewable raw materials, with the difference that forestry is less tied to economic aspects and this is reflected by the delay in using new monitoring technologies. The main forestry applications are aimed toward inventory of resources, map diseases, species classification, fire monitoring, and spatial gap estimation. This Special Issue focuses on new technologies (UAV and sensors) and innovative data elaboration methodologies (object recognition and machine vision) for applications in forestry.
