Book House Log Drying Rates in Southeast Alaska for Covered and Uncovered Softwood Logs

Download or read book House Log Drying Rates in Southeast Alaska for Covered and Uncovered Softwood Logs written by David L. Nicholls and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Log moisture content has an important impact on many aspects of log home construction, including log processing, transportation costs, and dimensional stability in use. Air-drying times for house logs from freshly harvested trees can depend on numerous factors including initial moisture content, log diameter, bark condition, and environmental conditions during drying. In this study, we evaluated air-drying properties of young-growth Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr) and of western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) from logs harvested in southeast Alaska. For each species, we considered inside storage in a warehouse vs. outside storage, as well as debarked logs vs. logs with bark remaining, resulting in four experimental treatments. We considered moisture losses after 8 and 12 months of air drying. There was considerable moisture loss for Sitka spruce logs, and much of the drying occurred during the first 8 months. Fastest drying rates for both species were for peeled logs with inside storage. Western hemlock logs showed higher moisture content and greater moisture content variation (vs. Sitka spruce), and in most cases would require additional drying beyond the 12-month study period to produce satisfactory house logs. Results of this study are significant because they can help entrepreneurs determine appropriate levels of capital investment (e.g., land, covered storage, debarking equipment), as well as whether to dry and process logs in southeast Alaska vs. some other location. This study found that a leading option for local producers would be to peel Sitka spruce logs, then air dry indoors for between 8 and 12 months. Another effective strategy would be to peel western hemlock logs, then air dry indoors for 12 months.

Book Estimates of Air Drying Times for Several Hardwoods and Softwoods

Download or read book Estimates of Air Drying Times for Several Hardwoods and Softwoods written by William Turner Simpson and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published data on estimated air drying times of lumber are of limited usefulness because they are restricted to a specific location or to the time of year the lumber is stacked for drying. At best, these estimates give a wide range of possible times over a broad range of possible locations and stacking dates. This report describes a method for estimating air drying times for specific locations by optimizing a drying simulation using existing experimental air drying times for northern red oak, sugar maple, American beech, yellow-poplar, ponderosa pine, and Douglas-fir. The results are simulation parameters that make it possible to estimate the air drying times of these species regardless of when they are stacked, in any location where average temperature and relative humidity are known, and for lumber of any thickness dried to any final moisture content. Graphs of these estimated air drying times to several final moisture contents are given for several nominal thicknesses of lumber at various locations within the growing range of the six species studied.

Book Effect of Drying Methods on Warp and Grade of 2 by 4 s from Small diameter Ponderosa Pine

Download or read book Effect of Drying Methods on Warp and Grade of 2 by 4 s from Small diameter Ponderosa Pine written by William Turner Simpson and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two studies were performed to characterize and control warp in nominal 2- by 4-in. (standard 38- by 89-mm) dimension lumber sawn from small-diameter ponderosa pine trees. One study was conducted at a commercial sawmill with trees harvested in central Arizona. The other study was conducted at the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin, in small experimental kilns with lumber from trees harvested in central Idaho. The three main variables in the studies were top loading, presteaming, and a high-temperature kiln schedule. A limited study of hot press drying was also included. The high-temperature kiln schedule in the experimental kilns reduced drying time to about half that of the conventional temperature schedule. Press drying time was slightly more than 3 h. Crook and bow caused most of the warp and the grade loss from warp. There was no evidence that presteaming affected warp or grade loss from warp. Top loading had a modest effect in reducing warp and grade loss from warp. High-temperature drying did not affect measured warp compared with the conventional temperature schedule. Grade loss from warp was less in high-temperature than in conventional temperature dried lumber. This might be explained by differences in moisture content change during storage. Press drying did not reduce warp or grade loss from warp.
