Book Principles of Agronomy for Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book Principles of Agronomy for Sustainable Agriculture written by Francisco J. Villalobos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explains the various aspects of sustainable agricultures to undergraduate and graduate students. The book first quantifies the components of the crop energy balance, i.e. the partitioning of net radiation, and their effect on the thermal environment of the canopy. The soil water balance and the quantification of its main component (evapotranspiration) are studied to determine the availability of water to rain fed crops and to calculate crop water requirements. Then it sets the limitations of crop production in relation to crop phenology, radiation interception and resource availability (e.g. nutrients). With that in mind the different agricultural techniques (sowing, tillage, irrigation, fertilization, harvest, application of pesticides, etc.) are analyzed with special emphasis in quantifying the inputs (sowing rates, fertilizer amounts, irrigation schedules, tillage plans) required for a given target yield under specific environmental conditions (soil & climate). For all techniques strategies are provided for improving the ratio productivity/resource use while ensuring sustainability. The book comes with online practical focusing on the key aspects of management in a crop rotation (collecting weather data, calculating productivity, sowing rates, irrigation programs, fertilizers rates etc).

Book Estimating Irrigation Water Use in the Humid Eastern United States

Download or read book Estimating Irrigation Water Use in the Humid Eastern United States written by Sara B. Levin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate accounting of irrigation water use is an important part of the U.S. Geological Survey National Water-Use Information Program and the WaterSMART initiative to help maintain sustainable water resources in the Nation. Irrigation water use in the humid eastern United States is not well characterized because of inadequate reporting and wide variability associated with climate, soils, crops, and farming practices. To better understand irrigation water use in the eastern United States, two types of predictive models were developed and compared by using metered irrigation water-use data for corn, cotton, peanut, and soybean crops in Georgia and turf farms in Rhode Island. Reliable metered irrigation data were limited to these areas. The first predictive model that was developed uses logistic regression to predict the occurrence of irrigation on the basis of antecedent climate conditions. Logistic regression equations were developed for corn, cotton, peanut, and soybean crops by using weekly irrigation water-use data from 36 metered sites in Georgia in 2009 and 2010 and turf farms in Rhode Island from 2000 to 2004. For the weeks when irrigation was predicted to take place, the irrigation water-use volume was estimated by multiplying the average metered irrigation application rate by the irrigated acreage for a given crop. The second predictive model that was developed is a crop-water-demand model that uses a daily soil water balance to estimate the water needs of a crop on a given day based on climate, soil, and plant properties. Crop-water-demand models were developed independently of reported irrigation water-use practices and relied on knowledge of plant properties that are available in the literature. Both modeling approaches require accurate accounting of irrigated area and crop type to estimate total irrigation water use.

Book Estimation of Water Balance and Crop Water Requirements

Download or read book Estimation of Water Balance and Crop Water Requirements written by Tathir Ahmad Usmani and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture provides the basis of sustenance for the population. But the challenge of maintaining a balance between human numbers and the capacity to produce food increases day by day.Furth more global climate change seems to make intra-annual rainfall distributions more erratic and inter-annual variations less predictable, resulting in greater uncertainty and risk for agriculture.Irrigation Scheduling according to crop water requirement at different stages not only minimizes the chances of under or over watering but also helpful to boost up crop output per unit of water.Apart of that it also gives idea to farmers and irrigation managers about the quantity of water needed to deliver to meet the peak demand of water.Present study is an attempt in this regard in which Water Balance according to Thornthwaite's method of Potential Evapotranspiration and Crop Water Requirements for different stages are computed on the basis of Penman-Monteith model for the study area of Samastipur, Bihar. These are the methods that require minimum effort and give maximum dividend.Hope that this book envisioned as a reference for those working in the field of achieving more crop per drop of water

Book Water Use in Crop Production

Download or read book Water Use in Crop Production written by M.b. Kirkham and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-04-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make the best use of available water for your crops! Water Use in Crop Production explores innovative methods that determine how much water certain crops need, in certain climates, in order to ensure adequate plant growth and help eliminate water waste. Through this informative book, agronomists, growers, researchers, and graduate students will find methods and techniques for effective water management that will save money and conserve water. Water Use in Crop Production will enable you enhance crop quality and quantity and save one of the earth's most important resource. Comprehensive and thorough, this essential book combines two vital needs, food and water, and examines what must be done in order to keep up with the ever-growing human population. Explaining conservation techniques used in Argentina, Australia, Israel, Morocco, New Zealand, the Philippines, Spain, and the United States, Water Use in Crop Production will help you achieve this goal as it discusses water management measures including: avoiding excessive deep percolation reducing runoff lessening water evaporation through methods such as reducing the capillary water flow to the surface of the soil determining the rates at which water is demanded and can be supplied in a specific area to create a plan for limiting water loss studying the root structure of plants to calculate how much water they need using deficit irrigation to help plants save water for future use evaluating citrus water use through the Penman-Monteith model Containing charts, tables, and examples of the concepts it discusses, this book is the culmination of the latest studies on water storage. Water Use in Crop Production provides you with reliable strategies and methods that will help you lessen water expenditures and improve the vitality of crops anywhere in the world.
