Book Presenting the Past

Download or read book Presenting the Past written by Larry J. Zimmerman and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2003-03-19 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the right media, archeologists can and must educate and excite the people who need their information. Larry Zimmerman's earnestly engaging guide to reporting archaeological findings argues that communication is one of archaeology's primary tasks. He offers advice on working with colleagues, identifying audiences, and creating dynamic, jargon-free prose. He offers easy pointers for developing and writing effective CRM reports, conference papers, and articles in general-interest magazines. Students will benefit from Zimmerman's frank advice about citations and style, as well as his discussion of diverse audiences. Practicing archeologists will learn much from the discussion of electronic media and new ways to reach non-academic audiences.

Book Studying Human Origins

Download or read book Studying Human Origins written by Raymond Corbey and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of human origin studies covers a wide range of disciplines. This important new study analyses a number of key episodes from palaeolithic archaeology, palaeoanthropology, primatology and evolutionary theory in terms of various ideas on how one should go about such reconstructions and what, if any, the uses of such historiographical exercises can be for current research in these disciplines. Their carefully argued point is that studying the history of palaeoanthropological thinking about the past can enhance the quality of current research on human origins. The main issues in the present volume are the uses of disciplinary history in terms of present-day research concerns, the relative weight of cultural and other 'external' contexts, and continuity and change in theoretical perspectives. The book's overall approach is an epistemological one. It does not, in other words, primarily address anthropological data as such, but our ways of handling such data in terms of our most fundamental, but usually quite implicit theoretical presuppositions.

Book The World of Ellen G White

Download or read book The World of Ellen G White written by Gary Land and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Seventh-day Adventists are somewhat familiar with positions taken by Ellen G. White on such topics as recreation, education, health, reform, etc. Most Adventists are not familiar, however, with the historical context of her writings. Even biographies of Ellen White usually fail to describe the world in which she lived and of which she was a part. What was the usual diet of Americans when she gave counsel on that subject? What was the situation of public education? What was the town in which she grew up like? She made many cross-country train trips, beginning soon after the first transcontinental railroad. What was the rail travel like then? What was the situation of Blacks, when she wrote about the church's attitude toward the freedom? All these topics and more, including the economic situation in Australia during the nine years Ellen White spent there, are presented in this book. Each of 14 areas is handled by a scholar who has specialized in the field. - Contributors. Preface. 1. Ellen White's Hometown: Portland, Maine, 1827-1846. 2. Michigan and the Civil War. 3. Book The Reconstructed Past

Download or read book The Reconstructed Past written by John H. Jameson and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2004-01-13 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To reconstruct or not to reconstruct? That is the question facing many agencies and site managers throughout the world. While reconstructed sites provide a three-dimensional pedagogic environment in which visitors can acquire a heightened sense of the past, an ethical conflict emerges when on-site reconstructions and restorations contribute to the damage or destruction of the original archaeological record. The case studies in this volume contribute to the ongoing debates between data and material authenticity and educational and interpretive value of reconstructions. Discussing diverse reconstruction sites from the Golan Region to Colonial Williamsburg, the authors present worldwide examples that have been affected by agency policies, divergent presentation philosophies, and political and economic realities.
