Book A Financial Tale of Two Cities

Download or read book A Financial Tale of Two Cities written by Jim Bain and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the intense commercial rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne over a period of 150 years. While Sydney was established nearly 50 years before Melbourne, the great wealth generated by the Victorian goldfields soon gave Melbourne an unassailable position as the continent's richest center of commerce. The story of this contest for commercial supremacy is based on Jim Bain's own long experience in the Australian financial-services industry, and particularly his exposure to the competition and fierce rivalry that existed between the leading Melbourne- and Sydney-based banks, merchant banks, fund managers and stockbrokers. Bain focuses on the roles played by several financial institutions--and key personalities--over many decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of post-war Japanese transnational corporations in Australia, this book, first published in 1990, gives valuable insights into the particular characteristics of Japanese overseas investment. It looks at how, where and why Japanese corporations have set up their business activities in Australia, focusing on the economic, political and geographic factors shaping their operations. It presents case studies of Japanese trading companies, manufacturing companies, banks, and financial institutions. As well as highlighting the essential differences that separate Japanese transnational companies from those of the UK and the USA, the study gives new theoretical insights into the complex behaviour of Japanese corporations in their host countries.

Book The Internationalisation Strategies of Small country Firms

Download or read book The Internationalisation Strategies of Small country Firms written by Howard Dick and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This research project combines contemporary and historical analysis to trace the evolution of Australian multinationals. It provides unique insights into how firms from a small economy achieved global competitiveness in their niche markets, while examining the barriers that inhibited others. The evidence is presented in comparative, industry and firm-case studies, and tells the story of international business made in Australia. The longitudinal and multi-level analysis in this research provides new insights that challenge the predominance of cross-sectional analytical framework dominating strategic management. Any scholars sincerely interested how companies from small countries can succeed on the global stage ought to read this book.' - Klaus E. Meyer, University of Reading Business School, UK The international business literature often struggles to depict a universal experience of internationalisation from the perspective of large countries. This book seeks to enrich the literature by providing a nuanced overview of the little-known Australian experience, being an atypical case of a small- to medium-sized economy which liberalised rapidly from the 1980s outside any trading bloc. Six data-rich survey chapters explore Australia's mixed success in founding its own multinationals. The experience of Australian firms is set in historical and comparative perspective, including interactions with inward and specifically American FDI. Five industry studies next consider why firms in retail, wine and professional services were more successful than in financial services and shipping. Nine detailed case studies of firms then identify the elements of administrative heritage, strategy and learning that have been the key to success or failure. The book concludes by outlining what can be learned from Australia's example and presenting implications for future research. The Internationalisation Strategies of Small-Country Firms will appeal to scholars, researchers and postgraduate students in international business and international economics.

Book Innovation Segregation By Two Australian Merchant Banks A Private Alternative to the Financial Patent for Protecting Financial Innovations and Informing Investors

Download or read book Innovation Segregation By Two Australian Merchant Banks A Private Alternative to the Financial Patent for Protecting Financial Innovations and Informing Investors written by James Kurt Dew and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We contrast two methods of encouraging financial innovation, recently liberalized patent regulations in the United States, and a method practiced by two Australian merchant banks. Financial innovations create unique intellectual property management problems. In industries such as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, announced innovations are instantly capitalized into share prices. But innovation in finance produces weak announcement effects, instead generating added long term risk as well as higher anticipated returns. This why the Australians' technique succeeds where patents fail. There are implications of this result for appropriate bank regulation and thus perhaps for the country and industry locus of future global financial innovation.

Book Australian Dictionary of Biography Volume 19

Download or read book Australian Dictionary of Biography Volume 19 written by Melanie Nolan and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 19 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB) contains concise biographies of individuals who died between 1991 and 1995. The first of two volumes for the 1990s, it presents a colourful montage of late twentieth-century Australian life, containing the biographies of significant and representative Australians. The volume is still in the shadow of World War II with servicemen and women who enlisted young appearing, but these influences are dimming and there are now increasing numbers of non-white, non-male, non-privileged and non-straight subjects. The 680 individuals recorded in volume 19 of the ADB include Wiradjuri midwife and Ngunnawal Elder Violet Bulger; Aboriginal rights activist, poet, playwright and artist Kevin Gilbert; and Torres Strait Islander community leader and land rights campaigner Eddie Mabo. HIV/AIDS child activists Tony Lovegrove and Eve Van Grafhorst have entries, as does conductor Stuart Challender, ‘the first Australian celebrity to go public’ about his HIV/AIDS condition in 1991. The arts are, as always, well-represented, including writers Frank Hardy, Mary Durack and Nene Gare, actors Frank Thring and Leonard Teale and arts patron Ian Potter. We are beginning to see the effects of the steep rise in postwar immigration flow through to the ADB. Artist Joseph Stanislaw Ostoja-Kotkowski was born in Poland. Pilar Moreno de Otaegui, co-founded the Spanish Club of Sydney. Chinese restaurateur and community leader Ming Poon (Dick) Low migrated to Victoria in 1953. Often we have a dearth of information about the domestic lives of our subjects; politician Olive Zakharov, however, bravely disclosed at the Victorian launch of the federal government’s campaign to Stop Violence Against Women in 1993 that she was a survivor of domestic violence in her second marriage. Take a dip into the many fascinating lives of the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
