Book Loverin s Chart of Time Centograph and Slate

Download or read book Loverin s Chart of Time Centograph and Slate written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Loverin's Chart of Time, Centograph and Slate: Historical Key; Periods and Epochs This work will place within the reach of professors and teachers, as well as students and others, means by which the memory, easily and effectively, may become possessed of historical events in their chronological order, through the faculties of localization and association, based upon the decimal system of reckoning, at once the most simple and practical. It cannot be contravened that the chronology of history has been almost wholly neglected or ignored by the early writers. That such should have been true in regard to the comparatively modern historians seems incredible; and that at no period until the nineteenth century a chart or map of time is to be found will undoubtedly increase our astonishment and wonder. The Fact Nevertheless Exists! No science is more instructive, nor need there be any more interesting, than history. Whatever efforts, therefore, are in the direction of supplying a want so universal, and of making its study more practical, will be received with approbation by the whole literary world. The mistaken notion (forced), that figures are representatives of time, has long since endowed the subject with the necessity for extraordinary mental effort, and spread the mantle of indifference so effectually that few are found who consider it attractive. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Reference Book Comprising a Chronological Table of Universal History; A Chronological Dictionary of Universal History; A Biographical Dictionary: With Geographical Notes; For the Use of Students, Teachers and Readers In the Chronological Table of Universal History the plan adopted has been to deal separately with the events of different countries. The events in any one year are not arranged all in chronological order, but each state is introduced independently. Several countries are, of course, grouped together in one division whenever the connection of events demands. In the history of the Middle Ages, and of modern times down to the American Revolution, the first place, as a rule, is accorded to the British Isles. France follows, and next in order come the countries of central Europe and Italy and Spain, after which the remaining states of Europe are introduced. The political history of the whole of the Old World is given before that of the New. From the time of the American Revolution the first place is assigned to the United States, the order otherwise remaining in the main as before. It has been deemed proper to present the history of Europe in the year 1848 in a connected sketch. Events not political are always left to the end. The names in the obituary lines are arranged in chronological order. In the Chronological Dictionary or Universal History the statements are expressed with extreme brevity, this portion of the book being supplemented by Part I., the method of reference to which is self-evident. Book Ancient History Literature and Art

Download or read book Ancient History Literature and Art written by Julia Harris Bentley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient History, Literature and Art: Topically Arranged With References Embracing a Geographical Method of Memorizing History The object of the topical method is to give prominence to important names and events, to emphasize and impress upon the memory What is most essential and avoid unnecessary detail. The object of the reference system is the study of a subject from the standpoint of difierent authors, Without the loss of time usually required in searching for references. In the selection of references, care has been taken to give the best authorities usually found in public and private libraries. In the paging of the references errors. May be found, and in some cases the refer ences may not cover the whole subject as lettered, but are given With that object in view. An alphabetical list of books referred to in the work, With the year of their publication and name of publisher, is given in the appendix. References in the work are only expected to correspond to the year of the publication as given in the catalogue. The purpose of the map is to hold the threads of history continuous by the aid of the eye Without taxing the memory, as illustrated in the study of geography by the aid of maps. The map study in this work is practically the same, the centuries tak ing the place of countries, persons and events of history answer ing to important places in geographical study. The topics and their subdivisions are arranged With a View to the main points of history and their historical sequence, tracing the progress of civilization, through the influence of religion, politics, literature and art; special attention being given to the rise, decline and fall of nations and causes therefor. The system is very elastic and may be condensed or expanded, according to the time at the student's disposal, or a choice of subject, history, art or litera ture may be pursued. As an outline of chronology the work is valuable as a ready reference J H. B. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Maps Their History Characteristics and Uses

Download or read book Maps Their History Characteristics and Uses written by Herbert George Fordham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maps, Their History, Characteristics and Uses: A Handbook for Teachers The object Of the course was that-oi creating an interest, from the educational point Of View, in the rather neglected subject of Cartography, and of supplying, in a succinct and systematic form, materials useful in themselves as suggestions for more detailed study. It embodies the history of map-production from the earliest times, from the point of view of both, science and practice and from that equally of the continuous development of the graphic art as applied to the pictorial and technical representation of sections of the earth's surface on paper or other suitable material. For the Teacher the knowledge of at least an outline of the History of Cartography is essential as a foundation. It alone can enable him to grasp the true elements of the science as applied to the highly conventional map of the scholastic and geographic system of to-day. It is believed that no Hand - hook at present exists which groups in a compact and accessible form the large. Mass of materials which are actually accumulated in standard works and. At our disposal for study. The present publication is an attempt to supply to the Teacher something in the nature of a Guide, but it is also hoped that it will be considered adequate in itself as an outline and foundation for actual class-teaching. On the historical side at all events the indications afforded may be sufficient for this purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Faces of History

Download or read book Faces of History written by Donald R. Kelley and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, one of the world's leading intellectual historians offers a critical survey of Western historical thought and writing from the pre-classical era to the late eighteenth century. Donald R. Kelley focuses on persistent themes and methodology, including questions of myth, national origins, chronology, language, literary forms, rhetoric, translation, historical method and criticism, theory and practice of interpretation, cultural studies, philosophy of history, and "historicism." Kelley begins by analyzing the dual tradition established by the foundational works of Greek historiography--Herodotus's broad cultural and antiquarian inquiry and the contrasting model of Thucydides' contemporary political and analytical narrative. He then examines the many variations on and departures from these themes produced in writings from Greek, Roman, Jewish, and Christian antiquity, in medieval chronicles, in national histories and revisions of history during the Renaissance and Reformation, and in the rise of erudite and enlightened history in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Throughout, Kelley discusses how later historians viewed their predecessors, including both supporters and detractors of the authors in question. The book, which is a companion volume to Kelley's highly praised anthology Versions of History from Antiquity to the Enlightenment, will be a valuable resource for scholars and students interested in interpretations of the past.
