The earlier chapters may appear too simple, while some teachers may consider the later ones too difficult. I hope, however, that experience will prove that the attempt to lead the pupil along a gentle upward grade has been successful. It has been my experience that a reasonable amount of detail makes a subject more intelligible and realistic to the pupil, and thus enables him to prepare and remember it better. I would urge the importance of requiring the prepara tion of the suggestive questions at the end of the chapter. IT his will lead to independence of thought and judgment. Book The Civil Government of the United States Revised Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Civil Government of the United States Revised Classic Reprint written by Asahel Norton Fitch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil Government of the United States (Revised) A new educational work, should, in itself, plainly indicate the excuse for its existence. Especially is this true of a textbook upon Civil Government, since the subject has been already so well treated in the various works now in daily use. Probably no one at this time doubts the propriety of giving the study of Civil Government a prominent place in our schools. Some of the pupils in the school rooms to-day will, in a few years, be occupying public positions of responsibility and power; and while these maybe comparatively few in number, yet in this country every citizen has political duties to perform, and should therefore be familiar with the plan and workings of the government which imposes them. Hence it remains only a question as to the manner in which the subject may be most effectively presented for the purposes of instruction. Those who, as teachers, have heard their classes in Civil Government complain that the subject was dry and uninteresting, need only consult their own recollections to know the justice of such complaints. It certainly is not possible to invest the subject with the charms of romance, or give it the thrilling interest of a History of the Crusades or the Conquest of Mexico. But it has seemed possible for a text-book upon Civil Government to be made so readable that it will invite and hold the attention of the pupil, instead of being the passive object of compulsory study. To accomplish this has been the aim in the preparation of this work. Our government being representative, the popular will controls, through these channels of representation, the intermediate political subdivisions, and finally asserts itself in the power of the Federal Government. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Civics Handbook: Containing a Brief Outline of American Civil Government and United States History This book is the outgrowth of class-room experience. It is published because of a demand from friends for copies of the notes which are the basis of the text. For several years the author vainly tried to correlate Civil Government and United States History in a single course of one semester by the use of several texts; the vanity of the effort caused the preparation of the notes of which this book is the elaboration. After five years of use, in manuscript, he has found the plan outlined within these pages eminently successful and he presents it to the public with the hope that it may be of use to others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the United States: National, State, and Local The plan, scope, content, and temper of this book are in large measure the outgrowth of my experience as a teacher. My students, by the drift of their questions and discussions, have moulded my ideas of what a text-book ought to contain. This book is theirs as much as it is mine. That fact may help to explain why some features of American government are dilated upon at considerable length, while others are left as self-evident propositions to the perception of the reader. It explains, moreover, why the same problem is occasionally discussed from different angles, even though this has in volved some degree Of repetition. And if the general tone of the book betrays an optimist, my sufficient answer is that no man can be for many years associated with the American undergraduate and remain anything else. Book Wisconsin Politics and Government

Download or read book Wisconsin Politics and Government written by James K. Conant and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the twentieth century, Wisconsin won national visibility and praise for its role as a ?laboratory of democracy? within the American federal system. In Wisconsin Politics and Government James K. Conant traces the development of the state and its Progressive heritage from the early territorial experience to contemporary times. Conant includes a discussion of the four major periods of institutional and policy innovation that occurred in Wisconsin during the twentieth century as well as an examination of the state?s constitution, legislature, office of the governor, courts, political parties and elections, interest groups, social welfare policy, local governments, state-local relations, and current and emerging issues. ø Readers of Wisconsin Politics and Government are likely to find a close correspondence between Wisconsin's social, economic, and political experience during the twentieth century and the essential democratic characteristics Alexis de Tocqueville describes in his classic work Democracy in America. For example, Wisconsin?s twentieth-century civil society was highly developed: its elected and administrative officials continuously sought to improve the state's political and administrative institutions, and they worked to enhance the economic and social conditions of the state's citizens. Other modern characteristics of the state's democratic experience include issue-oriented politics, government institutions operating free of scandal, and citizens turning out to vote in large numbers.
