Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Americanization To Help Win the War for Democracy is the main purpose of this book. The overthrowing of the Prussian autocracy was one vital phase of the struggle for democratic principles. The perfecting of our American democracy is another important aspect of this world-wide problem. That this volume will assist the cause of democracy, in some small way, is the hope of the author. The Federal government has directed our attention officially to the subject of Americanization. Through the recently established Division of Americanization, the entire country is being organized for that work. To aid in this splendid undertaking is the second aim of the writer. There are many private and semi-public organizations which are carrying on unrelated plans of assimilation. In the activities of some of these organizations, Americanization is receiving a narrow-minded and autocratic expression. It will fail wherever it denies the validity of comprehensive and fundamental principles. We dare not base it chiefly on compulsion. We must make it attractive and magnetic and just. To help meet this need is the third leading purpose which has caused the writing of this treatise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Americanism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Americanism Classic Reprint written by George B. Lockwood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americanism The American people have short memories. That is but natural. As history is measured, the United States is but a youth, and, as befits normal youth, self-sufficient and self-reliant, we have had little desire or need of dwelling upon the past. America has been busy dreaming and thinking of the morrow, with its duties and opportunities; busy exploring, settling and developing a new continent; engaged in construction rather than reflection. As a nation, we inherited no racial enmities or religious antipathies which made it natural to keep alive the memories of ancient grudges or necessary to appeal to ancient fears in order to maintain our national unity. This was not accidental. "There is a divinity which shapes our ends" and orders the destinies of nations. It was necessary to our establishment as a nation, to the sturdy, healthy development of our institutions that we be free to work out our problems, uninfluenced and unfettered by old prejudices and hatreds. It was necessary that our fathers wholly discard the institutions and practices of European civilization, grown fetid, and model America's government along wholly new and wholesome lines. But now we are developed physically; our frontiers have disappeared. We are developed politically; our institutions are firmly established and our national unity and solidarity tested and proved. America has reached maturity, that age when its future is served better by caution than by daring, and the interests and welfare of its citizens promoted better by holding fast to that which has proved true and enduring than by experimenting with the novel and untried. At various times in our national life there have come testing periods when, standing at the parting of the ways, the people have been called upon to choose between keeping the faith of their fathers and following the call of visionaries and the self-seeking ambitious. America has just passed through such a crisis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The native of the New World may, in dress and appearance, in culture and refinement, pass unnoticed in European society, but no soon er does he open his lips, than his intonation, choice of words, and structure of sentence, betray his foreign birth. The difference is, in reality, very slight, but it is characteristic, and as there is no better key to the habits and temper of a people, than the study of its watchwords and nicknames, its likes and dislikes of terms and phrases, we have endeavored to collect enough of these peculiari ties to furnish an idea of the way we talk. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American English The following pages are the development of a chapter on the same subject in the author's earlier book, "Our Common Speech," published in 1895 and long out of print, that chapter being itself the development of a paper read before the Albany Institute in 1882, printed in the Tenth Volume of the Transactions of that body, and also printed, in somewhat different form, in the North American Review for January, 1883. Several sentences relating to the early bibliography of the subject, included in the Albany Institute paper and repeated in "Our Common Speech," appear with some alterations in the preface of the Sylva Clapin "Dictionary of Americanisms"; and as they appear again in the book now in the reader's hand, it seems advisable to state the facts, lest possibly the present writer might be suspected of plagiarizing from Mr. Clapin. Download or read book The American as He Is Classic Reprint written by Nicholas Murray Butler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American as He Is The chapters of this book were delivered as lectures before the University of Copenhagen in September, 1908, in response to the invitation of the Rector and Faculty of that University. It is not easy to speak dispassionately of the institutions and the civilization of one's own country. The most ardent patriot sees many things that he would improve; the most detached critic feels many things that are surpassingly good. Only the historian of the future can hold the balance even between the strong and the weak aspects of a nation's life. My task was less ambitious and less difficult. It was to respond as best I could to the invitation of a sister university, rich in years and in service to scholarship and to science, to set out some of the aspects of American life and to draw, in large lines, a picture of that part of present-day civilization which the world knows as American.
