Book Agricultural Entomology

Download or read book Agricultural Entomology written by Dennis S. Hill and published by Timber Press (OR). This book was released on 1994 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Entomology presents a global view of the insect groups that are of major significance to human resources. "Agriculture" in this broad sense includes plants grown for food, horticultural field crops, and other ornamentals. Information is also included on insect pests of stored products, forest resources, and livestock, although in less detail. The book is intended for use as a college text and reference and assumes a basic knowledge of entomology but is also of great value outside the classroom for its comprehensive and detailed approach. There is a chapter on beneficial insects, including pollinators, honeybees, silkworms, and insects from which shellac and cochineal are made. Hundreds of high-quality line drawings and black-and-white photographs illustrate the insects, and an illustrated glossary and indexes of scientific and common names are provided. Almost all countries of the world are undergoing agricultural diversification programs with the introduction of new and exotic crops. Yet most books on insect pests restrict coverage to one country or region or to the tropics or temperate zones. The global approach of Agricultural Entomology emphasizes the similarities and important differences between insect pests of the major continents. It thus brings attention to insect species that might well spread as pests to new geographical areas. Closely related species are also treated, highlighting problems of control that could result from unsubstantiated identifications. Agricultural Entomology is a valuable resource for growers and gardeners interested in the developing field of integrated pest management. With copious information on the biology of insects around the globe, this authoritative and comprehensive book is an essential tool for anyone interested in understanding both the foes and allies of the insect world.

Book Handbook of Agricultural Entomology

Download or read book Handbook of Agricultural Entomology written by Helmut F. van Emden and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Agricultural Entomology by Helmut van Emden is a landmark publication for students and practitioners of entomology applied to agriculture and horticulture. It can be used as a reference and as a general textbook. The book opens with a general introduction to entomology and includes coverage of the major insects (and mites) that cause harm to crops, livestock and humans. The important beneficial species are also included. Organisms are described in a classification of insect Orders and Families. The emphasis is on morphological characters of major taxonomic divisions, “spot characters” for the recognition of Families, and the life histories, damage symptoms and economic importance of the various pest species. The book is beautifully illustrated in full colour with more than 400 figures showing both the organisms and the damage caused to plants with diagnostic characters indicated by arrows. Coverage is world-wide and includes much material stemming from the vast personal experience of the author. A companion website with additional resources is available at www.wiley.com/go/vanemden/agriculturalentomology

This important new title provides comprehensive coverage of major insect and mite pest species, primarily in Northern Europe. Textbook of Agricultural Entomology is broadly divided into two parts. The first part covers the external and internal features of the major insect and mite pest families, while the second part provides detailed descriptions of major pest species including information on life history stages (vital information when considering control methods) and the crops which these species attack.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Entomology: For Students, Farmers, Fruit-Growers and Gardeners A similar development of this work has taken place in the State Experiment Stations, and there are also State Entomological departments working in almost every State, and in many of them two or three different organizations, each with a large quota of workers. Economic entomology in its wider sense covers all those phases of the subject which have to do with insects 0f importance in relation to mankind. The forms which have distinctly agricultural relation are so numerous and represent so completely all the different groups of insects that we are compelled to include a very general survey of the subject. Book Entomology Ecology and Agriculture

Download or read book Entomology Ecology and Agriculture written by Paolo Palladino and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entomology, Ecology and Agriculture examines the vastly expanded governmental funding of scientific research and technological development for the institutional and intellectual organisation of life sciences in the twentieth century. It studies the history of natural historical investigations of insects in light of growing institutional organisation of the agricultural sciences in the United States and Canada, exploring how this context has shaped the emergence of economic entomology and ecology - two quite different but related disciplines. This study is facilitated by following economic entomologists' and ecologists' changing ideas about different pest control strategies, chiefly 'chemical', 'biological', and 'integrated' control. The author then follows the efforts of one specific group of entomologists, at the University of California, over three generations from their advocacy of 'biological' controls in the 1930s and 1940s, through their shifting attention to the development of an 'integrated' strategy in the 1950s, to their final establishment of "integrated pest management" in the context of "big biology" during the 1970s. Ultimately, this book is about the lives of scientists in twentieth century science as they have been shaped both by the massive intellectual and institutional structures of science, and by their own will to create something new and more rewarding out of these structures.
