Book Arnold Bennett The Great Adventure

Download or read book Arnold Bennett The Great Adventure written by Arnold Bennett and published by Stage Door. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnold Bennett was born in 1867 in Hanley, one of the six towns that formed the Potteries that later joined together to become Stoke-on-Trent - the area in which most of his works are located. For a short time he worked for his solicitor father before realising that to advance his life he would need to become his own man. Moving to London at 21, he obtained work as a solicitor's clerk and gradually moved into a career of Journalism. At the turn of the century he turned full time to writing and shortly thereafter, in 1903, he moved to Paris. In 1908 Bennett published The Old Wives' Tale, to great acclaim. With this, his reputation was set. Clayhangerand The Old Wives' Tale are perhaps his greatest and most lauded novels. But standing next to these are many fine short stories. Bennett bathes us in vignettes of life, replete with characters that are easy to immerse ourselves in, whatever their ambitions may be. Here we publish his play 'The Great Adventure'. As with anything written by Bennett it's a fabulous showcase for his literary talents.

Book excerpt: In the evening dimness of old Mrs. Maldon's sitting-room stood the youthful virgin, Rachel Louisa Fleckring. The prominent fact about her appearance was that she wore an apron. Not one of those white, waist-tied aprons, with or without bibs, worn proudly, uncompromisingly, by a previous generation of unaspiring housewives and housegirls! But an immense blue pinafore-apron, covering the whole front of the figure except the head, hands, and toes. Its virtues were that it fully protected the most fragile frock against all the perils of the kitchen; and that it could be slipped on or off in one second, without any manipulation of tapes, pins, or buttons and buttonholes—for it had no fastenings of any sort and merely yawned behind. In one second the drudge could be transformed into the elegant infanta of boudoirs, and vice versa. To suit the coquetry of the age the pinafore was enriched with certain flouncings, which, however, only intensified its unshapen ugliness. On a plain, middle-aged woman such a pinafore would have been intolerable to the sensitive eye. But on Rachel it simply had a piquant and perverse air, because she was young, with the incomparable, the unique charm of comely adolescence; it simply excited the imagination to conceive the exquisite treasures of contour and tint and texture which it veiled. Do not infer that Rachel was a coquette. Although comely, she was homely—a "downright" girl, scorning and hating all manner of pretentiousness. She had a fine best dress, and when she put it on everybody knew that it was her best; a stranger would have known. Whereas of a coquette none but her intimate companions can say whether she is wearing best or second-best on a given high occasion. Rachel used the pinafore-apron only with her best dress, and her reason for doing so was the sound, sensible reason that it was the usual and proper thing to do.

Book Arnold Bennett

Book excerpt: 'I have tried to depict Arnold Bennett as a man of character and integrity, a fundamentally innocent humorist, a superlative friend, and, to others, not myself, a difficult personality; but I have worked under considerable difficulties, with many interruptions, and the result may be unsatisfactory. If it is, I shall be sorry. One of my problems has arisen from the fact that to live again, as I have done, in a period long past and full of painful memories, has proved agitating and therefore exhausting.' Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) was a prolific English writer and journalist. He was a friend and benefactor to many writers of his generation including H. G. Wells, John Galsworthy, Aldous Huxley, and Siegfried Sassoon. Frank Swinnerton became acquainted with Bennett after sending him a draft of his first novel and later they became close friends over the course of many years. He wrote this detailed biography of Bennett some years after his death. It was first published in 1978.

Book Arnold Bennett

Download or read book Arnold Bennett written by Kenneth Young and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnold Bennett began as a journalist and never altogether lost the journalist's fascination for the complicated material processes which keep modern life in motion. It was this interest in externals that inspired Virginia Wolf's famous critical attack on Bennett's art, which she found lacking in feeling for 'mood, or soul, or inwardness', though she still acknowledged him 'by far the best workman' among the Edwardian novelists. Another woman novelist, Margaret Drabble, in her recent biography sees beyond this to depths in his work not visible to some of his contemporaries. Latterly Bennett wrote too much and too quickly, yet it is also that feeling for material detail which gives his best books their richness and authenticity, and in his greatest novel, The Old Wives Tale, it is precisely the subtle introduction of externals which holds the secret of his masterly handling of the themes of ageing and the passage of time. Kenneth Young examines those of Bennett's writings which have best stood the test of time, notably the novels and stories set in the Staffordshire pottery towns, such as The Old Wives Tale, and the Clayhanger series, and the London novel, Riceyman Steps, and, less well known, his Journals. He finds Bennett not only a novelist of lasting achievement but a literary personality of exceptional vitality.
