Book excerpt: This volume is inspired by the traditions of the oldest biology department in Russia, named after the academician E.N. Pavlovsky, which recently turned 210 years old. Comparative anatomy has been taught at the department since the time of K. Baer, who discovered the mammalian egg and introduced the teaching of comparative anatomy and embryology. The materials presented here will be useful to medical students learning the comparative anatomy of organs and systems, as well as high school students of biology. The book will provide the reader with a better understanding of phylogenetically determined anomalies and malformations of the development of internal organs in humans.

Book Primate Comparative Anatomy

Download or read book Primate Comparative Anatomy written by Daniel L. Gebo and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-10-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, illustrated textbook that reveals the structural and functional anatomy of primates. Winner of the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title of the Choice ACRL Why do orangutan arms closely resemble human arms? What is the advantage to primates of having long limbs? Why do primates have forward-facing eyes? Answers to questions such as these are usually revealed by comparative studies of primate anatomy. In this heavily illustrated, up-to-date textbook, primate anatomist Daniel L. Gebo provides straightforward explanations of primate anatomy that move logically through the body plan and across species. Including only what is essential in relation to soft tissues, the book relies primarily on bony structures to explain the functions and diversity of anatomy among living primates. Ideal for college and graduate courses, Gebo's book will also appeal to researchers in the fields of mammalogy, primatology, anthropology, and paleontology. Included in this book are discussions of: • Phylogeny • Adaptation • Body size • The wet- and dry-nosed primates • Bone biology • Musculoskeletal mechanics • Strepsirhine and haplorhine heads • Primate teeth and diets • Necks, backs, and tails • The pelvis and reproduction • Locomotion • Forelimbs and hindlimbs • Hands and feet • Grasping toes

Book Hyman s Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy

Download or read book Hyman s Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy written by Libbie Henrietta Hyman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1992-09-15 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book, now in its third edition, is to introduce the morphology of vertebrates in a context that emphasizes a comparison of structire and of the function of structural units. The comparative method involves the analysis of the history of structure in both developmental and evolutionary frameworks. The nature of adaptation is the key to this analysis. Adaptation of a species to its environment, as revealed by its structure, function, and reproductive success, is the product of mutation and natural selection–the process of evolution. The evolution of structure and function, then, is the theme of this book which presents, system by system, the evolution of structure and function of vertebrates. Each chapter presents the major evolutionary trends of an organ system, with instructions for laboratory exploration of these trends included so the student can integrate concept with example.

This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Human Species Considered From the Standpoints of Comparative Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Bacteriology Whenever the question as to the essential nature of Man is raised the uninitiated seem to think that there is nothing easier to answer. To them not only all that concerns the body, but also man's soul, is something so long since settled, so self-evident, as to require no further discussion. On the other hand, however, ever since the establishment of anthropology as an independent science, with untiring diligence experts have been busy investigating the nature of Man as compared with that of the lower animals, and now not a year passes without these investigations resulting in distinct modifications of the accepted points of view, in one or other direction. The aim of this book is the comparison of the essential characteristics of Man with those of the lower animals in the light of the results of recent research. Many a character hitherto regarded as distinctively human will be found to be shared by the lower animals, many another be proved man's indisputable possession, though here and there he may not be particularly edified thereby. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COMPARATIVE ANATOMY is the science of the structure of animals, considered in their relation to one another; COMPARATIVE PHYSIOLOGY deals with the Functios of the parts of which these animals are made up and by examining different forms that present various kinds of activities it throws light on the essential properties of living matter. The study of animals is but a part of the wider science the study of organised matter generally the science of which takes plants as well as animals the objects of its investigations. Under the head biological studies we have therefore to group; (a) Those which regard organims as working machines capable of performing various functions these studies are physiological whether animals or plant be separately or simultaneously examined (b) The second place the parts which the organism is made up may be investigate and studies are then said be anatomical, we concern ourselves with isolated types as does the student of human anatomy; or they are morphological when we compare organisms and their parts one with another; and try to draw out the significance of isolated facts and to learn their bearing the general scheme of the organisation of living matter.. The present work is concerned only with animals but as there is a fundamental resemblance between Plants and Animal it is in the first place necessary to enquire into the characters and modes of activity ofliving matter, pure and simple without any question as to whether it be animal or vegetable..
