Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy years after his death, the visionary work of Lev Semenovich Vygotsky (1896-1934) continues to have a profound impact on psychology, sociology, education, and other varied disciplines. The Essential Vygotsky selects the most significant writings from all phases of his work, and material from all six volumes of his Collected Works, so that readers can introduce themselves to the pioneering concepts developed by this influential Russian therapist, scholar, and cultural theorist, including: • The cultural-historical approach • The role of language in creating the mind • The development of memory and perception • Defectology (abnormal psychology/learning disabilities/special education) • The Zone of Proximal Development Each section features an insightful introduction exploring relevant aspects of Vygotsky’s life and illuminating the revolutionary historical context in which these writings were conceived. Together, they reflect the studies he was conducting at the time of his death and the pathbreaking clinical observations that made his reputation. For years, these papers were available mainly in hastily translated underground editions; now The Essential Vygotsky distills them into their most accessible form. Readers will be impressed and inspired by his insights, his optimism, his prescience, and his humanity. These papers are particularly relevant for students of developmental psychology, language, special education, and the history of these fields.

Book High Resolution Spectral Atlas of Nitrogen Dioxide 559 597 nm

Download or read book High Resolution Spectral Atlas of Nitrogen Dioxide 559 597 nm written by K. Uehara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen dioxide (N0 ) is notorious for its complex visible spectrum and has 2 frustrated many chemists and physicists. Despite their intense investigations the molecule still resists complete analysis of its spectrum. Because of the high density of lines, it is apparent that high-resolution measurements are essential to a thorough understanding of the spectrum. The major part of this book consists of an atlas, described in Chap. 2, of the absorption spectrum and the Stark modulation spectrum of N0 mea 2 sured using a cw dye laser. The narrow spectral width as well as the wide scan range of the dye laser made it possible to record the spectra contin uously over a wide range with Doppler-limited resolution. In the spectral range 16751-17885 em-I, about 13300 peaks have been observed in the absorption spectrum and their wave numbers, calibrated against Ar lines, are listed in the tables. The Stark modulation spectrum also shown provides useful information about the energy level structures complementary to that obtained from the absorption spectrum.

Book Essential Atlas of Mathematics

Download or read book Essential Atlas of Mathematics written by Parramon Studios, and published by Barrons Educational Series. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another brand-new title in Barron’s Essential Atlas science series explains principles of mathematics, which is the universal language of all science. This volume opens with a brief, enlightening description of the differing numeric systems devised by various cultures. The multitude of practical applications involving mathematics are then shown and explained, including measurements of weight and volume, monetary calculations, the binary system and its application in computer science, and much more. Architecture is discussed in terms of its fundamental relationship to principles of geometry. The circle, angles, and trigonometric functions are described, and fundamental principles of calculus and probability are touched upon. This easy-to-comprehend volume makes imaginative use of charts and diagrams to explain mathematical reasoning. There are color photos and illustrations on every page.

Book Atlas of Knowledge

  • Author : Katy Borner
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2015-03-20
  • ISBN : 0262328437
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Atlas of Knowledge written by Katy Borner and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of mapping: principles for visualizing knowledge, illustrated by many stunning large-scale, full-color maps. Maps of physical spaces locate us in the world and help us navigate unfamiliar routes. Maps of topical spaces help us visualize the extent and structure of our collective knowledge; they reveal bursts of activity, pathways of ideas, and borders that beg to be crossed. This book, from the author of Atlas of Science, describes the power of topical maps, providing readers with principles for visualizing knowledge and offering as examples forty large-scale and more than 100 small-scale full-color maps. Today, data literacy is becoming as important as language literacy. Well-designed visualizations can rescue us from a sea of data, helping us to make sense of information, connect ideas, and make better decisions in real time. In Atlas of Knowledge, leading visualization expert Katy Börner makes the case for a systems science approach to science and technology studies and explains different types and levels of analysis. Drawing on fifteen years of teaching and tool development, she introduces a theoretical framework meant to guide readers through user and task analysis; data preparation, analysis, and visualization; visualization deployment; and the interpretation of science maps. To exemplify the framework, the Atlas features striking and enlightening new maps from the popular “Places & Spaces: Mapping Science” exhibit that range from “Key Events in the Development of the Video Tape Recorder” to “Mobile Landscapes: Location Data from Cell Phones for Urban Analysis” to “Literary Empires: Mapping Temporal and Spatial Settings of Victorian Poetry” to “Seeing Standards: A Visualization of the Metadata Universe.” She also discusses the possible effect of science maps on the practice of science.
