Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Upon the Origin, Perpetuity, Change, and Proper Observance, of the Sabbath But when did God institute the Holy Sabbath Those who are in the habit of reading and under standing the Scriptures according to the common rules of interpretation, will doubtless marvel that such a question should ever be asked. For can any thing, they will demand, be more explicit, than the passage just quoted? Surely there is no thing ambiguous, either in the words themselves, or in their connexion with the preceding narrative. The plain account is, that when God had finished the great work of creation, he rested from it on the very next, or seventh day and that then he blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it. Yes, we reply, this, according to common understanding, is just what the sacred penman asserts; nor do we believe that one man in a million, would think of putting any other construction upon the passage. Indeed, no one, so far as we know, ever denied this to be the most natural meaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Moral Minorities and the Making of American Democracy

Download or read book Moral Minorities and the Making of American Democracy written by Kyle G. Volk and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should the majority always rule? If not, how should the rights of minorities be protected? In Moral Minorities and the Making of American Democracy, Kyle G. Volk unearths the origins of modern ideas and practices of minority-rights politics. Focusing on controversies spurred by the explosion of grassroots moral reform in the early nineteenth century, he shows how a motley but powerful array of self-understood minorities reshaped American democracy as they battled laws regulating Sabbath observance, alcohol, and interracial contact. Proponents justified these measures with the "democratic" axiom of majority rule. In response, immigrants, black northerners, abolitionists, liquor dealers, Catholics, Jews, Seventh-day Baptists, and others articulated a different vision of democracy requiring the protection of minority rights. These moral minorities prompted a generation of Americans to reassess whether "majority rule" was truly the essence of democracy, and they ensured that majority tyranny would no longer be just the fear of elites and slaveholders. Beginning in the mid-nineteenth-century, minority rights became the concern of a wide range of Americans attempting to live in an increasingly diverse nation. Volk reveals that driving this vast ideological reckoning was the emergence of America's tradition of popular minority-rights politics. To challenge hostile laws and policies, moral minorities worked outside of political parties and at the grassroots. They mobilized elite and ordinary people to form networks of dissent and some of America's first associations dedicated to the protection of minority rights. They lobbied officials and used constitutions and the common law to initiate "test cases" before local and appellate courts. Indeed, the moral minorities of the mid-nineteenth century pioneered fundamental methods of political participation and legal advocacy that subsequent generations of civil-rights and civil-liberties activists would adopt and that are widely used today.

Book Origin Perpetuity and Use of the Sabbath

Download or read book Origin Perpetuity and Use of the Sabbath written by Nathaniel Gunnison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin, Perpetuity and Use of the Sabbath: A Sermon, by Rev. N. Gunnison, Delivered in the Universalist Church, in Halifax, December 9, 1860 Once more. You will not find, upon examination, that there is recorded a command, or recommendation for keeping Sunday instead of the seventh day. Neither the Jewish nor Gentile con verts were ever exhorted to observe it as such. Nor can we conceive it possible that such a change should have taken place and no traces of the change be found in the record, either of the precept by which it was effected, or the command by which it was enforced. The Apostles evidently understood that the Sabbath, instead of being transferred to another day, was abolished with the rest of the Mosaic institutions. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1841 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XV. TESTIMONY OF ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY. Early and authentic ecclesiastical history confirms the view now presented. It states, indeed, in terms, that the Sabbath was changed from the seventh to the first day of the week, by authority of Christ himself; and also that the mode of keeping the one was transferred, so far as the genius of Christianity and the nature of the case would allow, to the other. Thus Clement of Alexandria (A. D. 192) says, "A Christian, according to the command of the gospel, observes the Lord's day" So that its observance, instead of being an accident, or a relic of Judaism, or in any way anti-Christian, was "according to the command of the gospel." JHhanasius also, (A. D. 326, ) renouncing the authority of the seventh day Sabbath, says, (De Semente, Ed. Colon. Tom. L p. 1060, ) "The Lord himself hath changed the day of the Sabbath to Lord's day." The testimony of Eusebius is still more to the purpose. He was born about A. D. 270, and died about 340. Mosheim says, he was "a man of vast reading and erudition." Till about forty years of age, he lived in great intimacy with the martyr Pamphilus, a learned and devout man of Cesarea, and founder of an extensive library there, to which Eusebius had free access. Eusebius as all admit, was an impartial as well as learned historian. He searched more thoroughly into the customs and antiquities of the church, than any other man in the early ages, and at Cesarea and elsewhere had access to the best helps for acquiring correct information. He is, by way of eminence, the ancient historiau of the church. His testimony on the subject before us is contained in his commentary on the Psalms, printed in Montfaucon's Collectio Nova Patrum, and is as follows: -- In commenting on...
