Book excerpt: The essays in this book represent ten years of the work of the Centre for the Study of Literature, Theology and the Arts in the University of Glasgow. Seemingly diverse, they are bound together by a common belief that theology flourishes in an interdisciplinary and transcultural environment. It cannot be an abstract concern, but is rooted in political circumstances, and responds to developments in society and the arts. That is why there are essays on film and contemporary artists like Mona Hatoum, as well as more traditional studies of theology read through and in literature. The Centre has always been an international meeting place, and contributions range well beyond the Western Christian, seeking new roots for theological thinking in the arts and culture of a postmodern world.

Book The Old Testament Canon Literature and Theology

Download or read book The Old Testament Canon Literature and Theology written by Professor John Barton and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of John Barton's work engages with current concern over the biblical canon, in both historical and theological aspects; with literary reading of the Bible and current literary theory as it bears on biblical studies; and with the theological reading and use of the biblical text. John Barton's distinctive writing reflects a commitment to a 'liberal' approach to the Bible, which places a high value on traditional biblical criticism and also seeks to show how evocative and full of insight the biblical texts are and how they can contribute to modern theological concerns. This invaluable selection of published writings by one of the leading authorities on biblical text and canon, also includes new essays and editorial introductions from the author.

Book The Bible in Theory

Download or read book The Bible in Theory written by Stephen D. Moore and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2010 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteen essays assembled in this volume, four of them co-authored, chart the successive phases of a professional life lived in the interstices of Bible and "theory." Engaging such texts as the Song of Songs, 4 Maccabees, Mark, Luke-Acts, John, and Romans, and such themes as the quest for the historical Jesus, the essays simultaneously traverse postmodernism, deconstruction, New Historicism, autobiographical criticism, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, masculinity studies, queer theory, and "posttheory." Individual essay introductions and periodic annotated bibliographies make the volume an advanced introduction to biblical literary criticism. --From publisher's description.

Download or read book Essays Vol 1 of 2 written by Richard Holt Hutton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Vol. 1 of 2: Theological and Literary; Theological Essays These Essays need no preface beyond the explanation that most of them appeared some years ago in the National Review, while a few have been published since in other periodicals. All have been carefully revised, and some re-cast and partly re-written. With regard to the first volume, on theological subjects, it may be well to add that the essay last in order was almost the first written, and that though it expresses a view which I still earnestly hold, I do not think it does full justice to the theology of Mr. Maurice, to whom indeed, but for a certain feeling that dedications have become a somewhat unreal mode of acknowledging mental obligations, I should have wished to dedicate these Essays. To him more than to any other living man, I certainly owe my belief that theology is a true science, that a knowledge of God in a true scientific sense, however imperfect in degree, is open to us. But for what I venture to think the great living principle of Mr. Maurice's writings, the first volume of these Essays, and a considerable portion of the second, could scarcely have been written. That principle I take to be that all beliefs about God are but inadequate intellectual attempts to justify a belief in Him which is never a merely intellectual affirmation, but rather a living act of the spirit by no means confined to those who consciously confess His presence.
