Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Papers: Sundry Essays on Subjects Relating to the Church and Christian Society It is neither the request of friends nor the demand of the public that induces me to print these Church Papers in a volume. The public has taken a transient interest in some of them, as they have appeared in various periodicals, and has promptly forgotten them. As for my friends, I must do them the justice to believe that if they had been consulted they would generally have agreed in advising me to save my money for some better use than printing a book which nobody will buy, which very few will read, and which hardly any one will approve. I may as well confess to myself that it is these very considerations that induce this publication. With a most willing heart for any the humblest work that may present itself to me as a minister of Jesus Christ, I find no way of service open to me, nor any near likelihood of any. In my unwilling seclusion, therefore, I have decided to put some of my thoughts on the social relations of Christianity into such a shape that they may reach the eye, not of the public - that is beyond my hopes - but of some of those whose high privilege it is to speak to the public and be heard. As I glance over the file of proof-sheets, I regret the things left out. I wish I could add a page or two to Article II, concerning the Historic Unity of the Church, and the Succession of Authority in its Ministry. I wish that, out of the depth of a very painful experience, I could add something of tender earnestness to the appeal, in Article V, against the wickedness - the unconscious wickedness - of a policy of wanton schism. Download or read book Last Essays on Church and Religion Classic Reprint written by Matthew Arnold and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Essays on Church and Religion The present volume closes the series of my attempts to deal directly with questions concerning religion and the Church. Indirectly such questions must often, in all serious literary work, present themselves; but in this volume I make them my direct object for the last time. Assuredly it was not for my own pleasure that I entered upon them at first, and it is with anything but reluctance that I now part from them. Neither can I be ignorant what offence my handling of them has given to many whose good-will I value, and with what relief they will learn that the handling is now to cease. Personal considerations, however, ought not in a matter like this to bear sway; and they have not, in fact, determined me to bring to an end the work which I had been pursuing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Some Biblical Questions of the Day: By Members of the University of Cambridge N either in the choice of subjects nor in the arrangement of the Essays has it been found possible to follow a system. The departments of Biblical study are less intimately related, have less of cohesion and logical order, than those of theological study, and no method of grouping can be altogether satisfactory. The Old Testament, however, natur ally claims a first place. In the field of Old Testament research historical criticism is at present predominant, and the Old Testament Essays in this book, it will be observed, deal largely with questions of this nature. The New Testament offers besides a number of problems requiring immediate attention from the textual critic, the student of sources, and the grammarian and some of these are handled in the following pages. Three Essays - the sixth, seventh, and eighth - are upon the borderland between the Old Testament and the New. Book Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion Classic Reprint written by Friedrich Von Hugel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion Christian Church, for well over the first three centuries of her existence, left all the killing to her persecutors and herself per sisted and prevailed not by killing but by dying. Nevertheless, we shall do well, I think, not to deny that even the persecutions tolerated or encouraged by later Church authorities, have con tributed, in certain times and places, to the real consolidation of Christendom. And especially we shall be wise if we do not insist upon any sense, innate in all human hearts, of the essential heinousness of all persecution. And in Paper No. 4 I have attempted to show how the reality of Evil is beyond any direct explanation by anyone - the true state of affairs here is not that believers can explain and that unbelievers cannot explain, still less that Christians cannot explain but that sceptics can. No but that Christianity does, if something other, yet something more than explain Evil. Christianity has Immensely increased the range and depth of our insight as to Evil and, at the same time, Christianity alone has given man the motives and the power not only to trust on, unshaken, in the spiritual sun, in God, in spite of these sun spots of Evil, but to transform Evil into an instrument of Good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eruvin, or Miscellaneous Essays on Subjects Connected With the Nature, History, and Destiny of Man SO far as any act of God has relation to intelligent beings, it is a revelation of himself; but when we use the word Revelation, we ge nerally mean that manifestation of his nature, of his moral government, and of his purposes, which he has given to man. This also is generally still farther restricted to that revela tion of himself which God has been pleased to make by his written Word. Thus, we com mouly find the epithet natural applied to religion, in contradistinction to the epithet re vealed althoughwhat a man learns from the works of God is as truly learned by revelation. Book National Idealism and a State Church

Download or read book National Idealism and a State Church written by Stanton Coit and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Idealism and a State Church: A Constructive Essay in Religion Speaking of St Paul's idea of the Lord's Supper as the unifying sign of fellowship among members of the Church, Dean Armitage Robinson says: Paul, in this as in so many other instances, arrived at his interpretation through the exigencies of his special mission. His task of welding into one the Jewish and Gentile elements led him to develop the conception of the corporate unity of all Christians. Food has ever been the token of unity - the bond of equal intercourse. Refusal to take food together is the symbol of exclusiveness and caste dis tinction. The Jew could not, by the later Pharisaic ordinances, eat with the Gentile. If Christ were for Jew and Gentile alike, the Eucharist, the feast of the new and all - inclusive 'covenant, ' must be the common meal of Jew and Gentile. This in itself must have given it to Paul a special significance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
