Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Un-Natural History The papers here collected have already severally appeared, originally in the pages of the Month, afterwards in three separate volumes published by the C. T. S. under the titles Science and Scientists, Science or Romance? Evolutionary Philosophy and Common Sense. Although the topics of which they treat are very various, and, it may seem, diverse, they have this in common, that all deal with points raised by the more prominent and dogmatic Evolutionists, whose writings are familiar to the public; whilst the object of all is to show that we have the means of judging for ourselves concerning much which we are commonly bidden to accept on the authority of experts. Book excerpt: A “brilliant and provocative” (The New Yorker) celebration of Melville’s masterpiece—from the bestselling author of In the Heart of the Sea, Valiant Ambition, and In the Hurricane's Eye One of the greatest American novels finds its perfect contemporary champion in Why Read Moby-Dick?, Nathaniel Philbrick’s enlightening and entertaining tour through Melville’s classic. As he did in his National Book Award–winning bestseller In the Heart of the Sea, Philbrick brings a sailor’s eye and an adventurer’s passion to unfolding the story behind an epic American journey. He skillfully navigates Melville’s world and illuminates the book’s humor and unforgettable characters—finding the thread that binds Ishmael and Ahab to our own time and, indeed, to all times. An ideal match between author and subject, Why Read Moby-Dick? will start conversations, inspire arguments, and make a powerful case that this classic tale waits to be discovered anew. “Gracefully written [with an] infectious enthusiasm…”—New York Times Book Review

Book Essay on the Life and Poetry of Homer

Download or read book Essay on the Life and Poetry of Homer written by Plutarch and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bilingual edition, with introduction and brief commentary, makes accessible for the first time in English a text of great importance for the history and interpretation of Homer. Although attributed to Plutarch, the Essay is probably the work of a grammaticus of the second and thirdcentury and is the single most valuable source of evidence for the nature of the teaching of Homer in the schools of the Roman Empire. Well represented in the manuscript tradition, the Essay was used as prefatory material by Renaissance editors of Homer, beginning with the editio princeps (1488), and so exercised a powerful influence on Renaissance and early-modern readers, who often refer to "Plutarch" as an authority on Homer. The newly edited Greek text is presented with facing translation.

Book Plutarch in English 1528 1603 Volume One Essays

Download or read book Plutarch in English 1528 1603 Volume One Essays written by Fred Schurink and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutarch was one of the most popular classical authors in Renaissance England. These volumes present nine Tudor and Stuart translations from his Essays and Lives with a General Introduction locating these works in the context of Plutarch’s wider influence in early modern England. They offer selections from two of the classics of English Renaissance translation, North’s Lives (1579) and Holland’s Morals (1603): the essays ‘On Reading the Poets’ and ‘Talkativeness’ and the Lives of Demosthenes and Cicero and Caesar. They also include editions of a number of less well-known but equally significant translations of individual Essays and Lives, one available in manuscript alone until now and several not reprinted since the sixteenth century: Thomas Wyatt’s The Quiet of Mind (1528), Thomas Elyot’s The Education or Bringing up of Children (1528–30), Thomas Blundeville’s The Learned Prince (1561), and Henry Parker, Lord Morley’s The Story of Paullus Aemilius (1542–46/7). Detailed annotations trace how translators drew on, and departed from, Greek, Latin, and French editions of Plutarch while introductions to each of the works examine their impact on English Renaissance literature and culture. By presenting a wide range of translations from the Essays and Lives, the volumes bring to light the variety of translation practices and the different social, political, and cultural contexts in which Plutarch was read and translated in Tudor and Stuart England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year With Nature IT has been my aim in the various essays included in this volume to write in as simple and unpretentious a manner as possible, and to describe - as it seemed to strike me - that which I have seen and heard in, or know of, the Natural History world. I have not tried to cultivate any literary style or artistic merit, and it would indeed surprise me to learn that I in any way possess either of these accomplishments. Book The Oxford Handbook of Animals in Classical Thought and Life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Animals in Classical Thought and Life is the first comprehensive guide to animals in the ancient world, encompassing all aspects of the topic by featuring authoritative chapters on 33 topics by leading scholars in their fields. As well as an introduction to, and a survey of, each topic, it provides guidance on further reading for those who wish to study a particular area in greater depth. Both the realities and the more theoretical aspects of the treatment of animals in ancient times are covered in chapters which explore the domestication of animals, animal husbandry, animals as pets, Aesop's Fables, and animals in classical art and comedy, all of which closely examine the nature of human-animal interaction. More abstract and philosophical topics are also addressed, including animal communication, early ideas on the origin of species, and philosophical vegetarianism and the notion of animal rights.

  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book Refuge written by Terry Tempest Williams and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-03-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1983 Terry Tempest Williams learned that her mother was dying of cancer. That same season, The Great Salt Lake began to rise to record heights, threatening the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and the herons, owls, and snowy egrets that Williams, a poet and naturalist, had come to gauge her life by. One event was nature at its most random, the other a by-product of rogue technology: Terry's mother, and Terry herself, had been exposed to the fallout of atomic bomb tests in the 1950s. As it interweaves these narratives of dying and accommodation, Refuge transforms tragedy into a document of renewal and spiritual grace, resulting in a work that has become a classic.

Download or read book Essays and Nature Studies written by W. J. C. Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Nature Studies: With Lectures The essays and articles here presented to the reader repro sent for the most part the outcome of the thoughts and studies and observations of a busy man, made in the intervals of his severer labours. Their author was, in his active days, a mathe matician of repute, a profound scholar, a man of long experience in educational work, both by pen and voice, and a painstaking editor and registrar. The contents of the volume comprehend two classes or descriptions of literature, yet the dividing line is withal so fine that the two blend happily. There are in the first part of the volume some papers on the observation of Nature and kindred subjects, some of them reprinted from the pages of Nature Notes, and other journals, which are not inaptly termed Nature Studies. They have no pretence to be scientific articles, and are collected and printed here because it is believed that they present enough of observation of Nature and her ways, coupled with enough of good English and happily conveyed directions for the profitable employment of leisure time, to warrant their preservation.
