Pursuing Hagedorn’s intellectual development, we have tried to reflect on the core questions of humanity according to Ernst Bloch “Who are we?”, “Where do we come from?” and “Where are we heading?” In this way, and without knowing it, Konrad Hagedorn initiated a c- lective action process he would have very much enjoyed ... if he had been allowed to take part in it. But it was our aim and constant motivation to surprise him with this collection of essays in his honour. Konrad Hagedorn was reared as the youngest child of a peasant family on a small farm in the remote moorland of East Frisia, Germany. During his childhood in the poverty-ridden years after the Second World War, he faced a life where humans were heavily dependent on using nature around them for their livelihoods; meanwhile, he learned about the fragility of the environment. As a boy, he - tended a one-room schoolhouse, where his great intellectual talents were first r- ognised and used for co-teaching his schoolmates. These early teaching expe- ences might have laid the foundations for his later becoming a dedicated lecturer and mentor.

The main message in this volume is that the globalised governance regime led by the North sets the twin agenda of development and environmental management ignoring the contradictory nature of the two, as the nature/environment of the South are increasingly available to the North to subsidise development and manage environment in the North. The book also extends this analysis to the globalised nature of peace and development in national states and presents experiences from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. The liberal peace-building project located within the globalised regime, has contributed to new conflicts over resources and power in the South, as the resource itself is subject to the increasing demands of global, particularly corporate, capital. The book is a call to academia, policy makers and activists to pay serious attention to these contradictions in the theories, policies and practices of development. The book is in honour of Nadarajah Shanmugaratnam, and draws on his work on the 'contradiction-interdependence dialectic' relation between capital and nature/environment.

Book excerpt: This dissertation contributes to the study of the Chinese economy by elaborating China’s alternative economic system, examining the evolution of Chinese environmental policies, and proposing a Chinese Green Job Guarantee. Delineating China’s political economy post-1949, I challenge the Eurocentric interpretation of China’s post-1978 economic reform as an incomplete and ongoing transition and argue that the Chinese economy, instead of transitioning, has transformed into a distinct type of market economy. To understand the Chinese economy, the question to ask is not whether China today is capitalist or socialist, or whether the Chinese government is interfering too much with the market, but rather what kind of a market economy could best fulfill the developmental vision set by the Chinese state. Echoing this finding, I illustrate that the Chinese environmental policies have evolved from contradiction to synthesis since 2005, and hence the Chinese state has been and likely will be shaping China’s environmental landscape more responsibly and effectively into the future. Finally, I demonstrate that the Chinese state should and can implement a Green Job Guarantee program to coordinate economic growth, full employment, structural adjustments, and environmental sustainability. In 2019, increasing China’s fiscal deficit by 1.58% of GDP would have financed a complete Job Guarantee to eliminate China’s 24.27 million urban unemployment and elevate the country’s GDP growth rate to the 9.23% and 10.65% range.

This trend was expressed by political parties through a platform of environmental public policies during political campaigns, as well as the setting of environmental budgets by the presidents during their terms of office. By means of five essays falling into the scope of the Public Choice School of Thought, this thesis aims at determining whether politicians' behavior have been motivated by self-interest or rather by global well-being satisfaction.The first chapter examines how environmental issues have integrated the spectrum of French political parties of all ideologies whereas the second chapter analyses the determinants of an environmental offer and this within the European political parties since 1970. Chapter 3 and 4 focus on environmental public spending done dy European countries since 1995, and analyze the application of the environmental political pledges and the impact of the electoral rules inplace on environmental public spending at both, the central budget scale and the total budget scale of states. Chapter 5 compares political entrepreneurship to associative entrepreneurship and market entrepreneurship to determine the most efficient way of solving environmental issues.
