Book Skepticism in Philosophy

Download or read book Skepticism in Philosophy written by Henrik Lagerlund and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Henrik Lagerlund offers students, researchers, and advanced general readers the first complete history of what is perhaps the most famous of all philosophical problems: skepticism. As the first of its kind, the book traces the influence of philosophical skepticism from its roots in the Hellenistic schools of Pyrrhonism and the Middle Academy up to its impact inside and outside of philosophy today. Along the way, the book covers skepticism during the Latin, Arabic, and Greek Middle Ages and during the Renaissance before moving on to cover Descartes’ methodological skepticism and Pierre Bayle’s super-skepticism in the seventeenth century. In the eighteenth century, it deals with Humean skepticism and the anti-skepticism of Reid, Shepherd, and Kant, taking care to also include reflections on the connections between idealism and skepticism (including skepticism in German idealism after Kant). The book covers similar themes in a chapter on G.E. Moore and Ludwig Wittgenstein, and then ends its historical overview with a chapter on skepticism in contemporary philosophy. In the final chapter, Lagerlund captures some of skepticism’s impact outside of philosophy, highlighting its relation to issues like the replication crisis in science and knowledge resistance.

Book Mary Shepherd s An Essay Upon the Relation of Cause and Effect

Download or read book Mary Shepherd s An Essay Upon the Relation of Cause and Effect written by Lady Mary Shepherd and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mary Shepherd's An Essay upon the Relation of Cause and Effect, first published in 1824, was a pioneering work in metaphysics and epistemology. Together with her 1827 Essays on the Perception of an External Universe, they make her one of the most important philosophers of her era. Although widely neglected by the history of philosophy in the decades after her death, her works have recently begun to attract the attention and sustained study they deserve. In the course of her writings, Shepherd offers trenchant and detailed rebuttals of the arguments and conclusions of many prominent predecessors-including George Berkeley, Thomas Reid, Dugald Stewart, Thomas Brown, William Lawrence, and especially David Hume-but she is no merely negative thinker. On the contrary, her critiques are always in the service of her own distinctive and highly original doctrines, which are of striking contemporary interest. Appearing two hundred years after its original publication, this is the first full modern edition of her first book, which presents and defends the theory of causation and scientific knowledge that constitutes the cornerstone of her entire philosophy. The edition includes an extensive introduction and scholarly notes throughout that provide historical and philosophical context while explaining the central ideas of the work. It also includes Shepherd's two essays published in 1828 and all of her known letters-all but one of them published here for the first time-which shed significant additional light on her philosophical ideas"--

Book The Spirituality of Causation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirituality of Causation: Scientific Hypothesis Tms work, which I had intended to describe as a. Scien tific Induction, is, like Franklin's happy surmise of the cause of lightning, sent forth under the designation of an Hypothesis; not that I perceive the superior appropriate ness of the latter term but rather because I would of all things avoid the imputation of an unjustifiable assurance to which the former term might in the opinion of a. Valued critical friend make me amenable. Possibly there are to be found many who will regard even the more modest term to be presumptuous; as, applied in its present connexion, it really raises the same question as the other; for while the one indicates that the Mind of Deity has actually been discovered in His work of creation, the other supposes such a discovery to be at least possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inquiry Into the Relation of Cause and Effect The Essay which follows is now presented to the lovers of Metaphysical Disquisition in a form so much enlarged and altered as to constitute almost a New Work. When originally written, with the view of giving some satisfaction to the public mind, on a subject of obscure and difficult controversy, to which peculiar circumstances had attracted a very general interest, it was limited, as much as possible, to an examination of the theory on which the controversy had taken place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "regularity" theory of causation is often regarded as one of Hume's greatest contributions to philosophy. Arguing that the theory is indefensible, Strawson maintains that such a claim about nature would have been utterly contrary to Hume's fundamental philosophical principles, and that he never adopted it in any case.
