Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Millennium On the much contested point, whether the dispensation of millennial blessedness imply merely an increased outpouring of the Spirit, or whether, in addition to that, it imply also the personal reign of Christ and of his saints, I would venture a few Observations; speaking, however, as one who is rather an inquirer than a decided advocate of either system. Still, I cannot deny that on the supposition that the millennium is to be an universal reign of righteousness, much would incline me to believe in the personal advent. In the first place, there is, in my mind, great force in the argument that, to a triumphant church, the Scriptures of the New Testament would be in a great measure inapplicable. For how could the friendship of the world be enmity against God, when all its kingdoms did him service? How could those who live godly in Christ8 ON the millennium. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suspending the distinction between headline news and high theory, Avital Ronell examines the diverse figures of finitude in our modernity: war, guerrilla video, trauma TV, AIDS, music, divorce, sadism, electronic tagging, rumor. Her essays address such questions as, How do rumors kill? How has video become the conscience of TV? How have the police come to be everywhere, even where they are not? Is peace possible? “[W]riting to the community of those who have no community—to those who have known the infiniteness of abandonment,” her work explores the possibility, one possibility among many, that “this time we have gone too far”: “One last word. It is possible that we have gone too far. This possibility has to be considered if we, as a species, as a history, are going to get anywhere at all.”

Book Canaan in the Second Millennium B C E

Download or read book Canaan in the Second Millennium B C E written by Nadav Na'aman and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the past three decades, Nadav Na'aman has repeatedly proved that he is one of the most careful historians of ancient Canaan and Israel. With broad expertise, he has brought together archaeology, text, and the inscriptional material from all of the ancient Near East to bear on the history of ancient Israel and the land of Canaan during the second and first millenniums B.C.E. Many of his studies have been published as journal articles or notes and yet, together, they constitute one of the most important bodies of literature on the subject in recent years, particularly because of the careful attention to methodology that Na'aman always has brought to his work. Collected here are 23 essays on the Hurrians, the Egyptians and their presence in the Levant during the second millennium B.C.E., Canaanite city-states, the Amarna Letters, and the neighbors of Canaan in the north, such as Alalakh and Damascus. The essays range over such topics as scribes and language, archaeology, cultural influences, and the interrelations of the great powers during this period. The volume includes indexes of ancient personal names, place-names, and biblical references.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Millennium: An Essay Read to the General Convention of New-Hampshire, June, 1853 The convention have assigned to me, as a theme for this essay, The modern theory of Millenarianism. I do not understand them to expect a discussion of this subject, by way of defence, or apology, which would re quire a volume but a statement, which may be brought within the limits proper to one of the many exercises of this occasion. I honor the courtesy and liberality of my brethren. It is due to them, and to myself, not to decline their gene rous appointment. I will endeavor not to interfere with their other engagements, nor obtrude greatly upon their patience, nor make severe demands upon their charity. Book Three Views on the Millennium and Beyond

Download or read book Three Views on the Millennium and Beyond written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there biblical evidence for a thousand-year earthly kingdom (the Millennium) ruled by Christ before the fulfillment of the new heaven and new earth? Revelation chapter 20 seems to suggest so, but few books of the Bible are so difficult to interpret. And a discussion of the Millennium branches out into many other theological questions about the end times (eschatology): Are these the last days? What must happen before Jesus returns? What part does the church play? This Counterpoints volume compares three views of the Millennium: Premillennial: Christ will come again before this kingdom is established. Postmillennial: our present age represents that kingdom and that the church is and must move toward the fulfillment of this kingdom. Amillennial: a future Millennium is not a literal kingdom, and when Christ returns, he will usher in an immediate new heaven and new earth. Robert B. Strimple, Kenneth L. Gentry Jr., and Craig A. Blaising offer their perspectives, giving their exegetical reasoning. Each of them then responds to the views held by their peers in a respectful and informative setting, making it easy for you to compare their beliefs and gain a better understanding of how this aspect of Christianity's great hope--the return of Jesus--is understood by the church. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Book A Shopkeeper s Millennium

Download or read book A Shopkeeper s Millennium written by Paul E. Johnson and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2004-06-21 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quarter-century after its first publication, A Shopkeeper's Millennium remains a landmark work--brilliant both as a new interpretation of the intimate connections among politics, economy, and religion during the Second Great Awakening, and as a surprising portrait of a rapidly growing frontier city. The religious revival that transformed America in the 1820s, making it the most militantly Protestant nation on earth and spawning reform movements dedicated to temperance and to the abolition of slavery, had an especially powerful effect in Rochester, New York. Paul E. Johnson explores the reasons for the revival's spectacular success there, suggesting important links between its moral accounting and the city's new industrial world. In a new preface, he reassesses his evidence and his conclusions in this major work.
