Book The Political Economy of International Trade Law

Download or read book The Political Economy of International Trade Law written by Daniel L. M. Kennedy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-23 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International experts from law, economics and political science provide in-depth analysis of international trade issues. Attorneys, economists and political scientists adopt a common viewpoint, entitled 'transcending the ostensible'. This approach directs particular attention to the possibility that WTO legal institutions, like other international legal institutions, will function in unexpected ways due to the political and economic conditions of the international environment in which they have been created, and in which they operate. A range of trade problems are considered here. Topics include the constitutional dimensions of international trade law, adding subjects and restructuring existing subjects to international trade law, the legal relations between developed and developing countries, and the operation of the WTO dispute settlement procedure. This will be an essential volume for professionals and academics involved with international trade policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present publication of re ports and discussions sterns from the fourth Session of the Hague-Zagreb Colloquium, held at Eernewoude, in the Netherlands. The preceding three Sessions were held at Stubice Toplice, in Yugoslavia (1974), Zeist, in the Netherlands (1976) and, again in Yugoslavia, at Opatija (1978). The fourth Session was originally planned for May 1980. On the eve of the meeting, the then President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the late Marshall J .B. Tito, passed away. On hearing the news of the Marshall's death, the Organizing Committee of the Hague-Zagreb Colloquium immediately decided that the Session should not then be held. The postponement lasted, in fact, a whole year: the fourth Session was convened at Eernewoude in May 1981. For the Eernewoude Session the formula that had produced such excellent results in the previous conferences was maintained. Four topics of international trade law were thoroughly discussed on the basis of reports submitted by scholars from the various legal systems represented at the conference. Apart from the Yugoslav and Dutch participants, scholars from the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Germany, Belgium and Norway took part in the discussions, be it in the capacity of reporter, of chairman or as expert in the field covered by the Colloquium: the law of international trade. A student competition had again been organised and the members of the win ning teams from Yugoslavia and from the Netherlands were among the participants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains ten writings on different aspects of international law, each of them cross-referenced, in instances in which information in one is relevant to points made in another. The first essay considers the character of the subject, and its relation to other entities of relevance to it, such as its compatibility with national law and its relation to maritime law. The second one considers different types of legal instruments in settings of international law, and explains how to read a multilateral convention, using the Convention for the International Sale of Goods as an example. The third part discusses the characteristics of a state and the concept of recognition, the fourth reviews the various roles that institutions take in international law, concentrating in particular on major regional organisations, and the fifth explores the extent to which the World Trade Organisation and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade provide for developing countries. Essay Six summarises the framework for international labour law and investigates its contents and workings, then the seventh considers which countries predominate in the running of international institutions. The eighth paper explores how regional entities might co-operate with international institutions in the harmonisation of the law, and the ninth one investigates the place of negotiation as a method of international dispute resolution. Finally, the tenth essay considers the past, present and future of international law, and reviews especially the role of language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Truth About Trade, international scholar, jurist, statesman, and activist James Bacchus offers a thought-provoking collection of some of the essays he has written on international trade and international law since he completed his tenure as one of the founders and twice the chairman of the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The breadth of these essays ranges from his visionary proposals for expanding world trade and enhancing the international rule of law by modernizing the WTO-based multilateral world trading system, to his thoughts on the abhorrence and illegality of torture and on the necessity of courage in defense of human freedom. Written as public commentary during the past two decades, these essays, because of the ideas and the observations they contain, remain highly relevant to the international debate today. In his thinking about how best we should shape the legal framework of the world, the author remains ahead of his time.

Book Essays in International Trade and Public Economics

Download or read book Essays in International Trade and Public Economics written by Margarita M. Kalamova and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2012 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays of this book are contributions to the empirical Literature in International Trade and Public Economics. They deal with the relationship between the structure and quality of the public sector and the process of economic integration. Two of the essays add to the empirical determinants of trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) and to the numerous applications of the theory of government decentralization. Decentralization tends to discourage inward FDI and domestic trade and to increase imports and exports. A third essay focuses on the effect of governments' intangible assets - such as consumer perceptions about countries and products from these countries - on FDI. A country's nation brand is shown to have a significant and large positive effect on investment flows.
