Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a concise, accessible introduction to the essentials of anesthesia, suitable for medical students, junior doctors, nurse anesthetists, and all operating theatre staff. It provides a brief, broad overview of the science and practice of anesthesia without overwhelming the reader with intimidating detail. The first section of the book describes the evaluation of the patient, the different approaches to anesthesia, and the postoperative care of the patient in pain. The next section introduces the essentials of physiology and pharmacology and their role in understanding the principles of anesthesia. The final section presents a step by step description of clinical cases, ranging from the simplest to the most complex. These clinical vignettes give a very real introduction to the practicalities of anesthesia and will give the non-anesthetist physician an idea of how to prepare a patient for a surgical procedure.

Considerations for quality improvement and patient safety have been expanded throughout the book. Anesthesia Student Survival Guide provides a complete introduction to the specialty and is aimed at medical and nursing students as well as practitioners in critical care who seek a succinct overview of anesthesiology. From reviews of the First Edition: “...an excellent resource for the student wanting a deeper understanding of what is essentially a post-graduate subject, for example, an elective student.” --British Journal of Anaesthesia “This is an excellent introduction to the specialty for third-year medical students, covering a broad range of material at a sufficient depth to be useful, and providing a good structure for a comprehensive course of self-directed study.” --Doody’s Review Service “The writing style is uniformly strong, which makes the book easy to read....[It] serves not only as an excellent resource for students and other learners seeking an introduction to anesthesia but also as a platform for teaching the basics. It will be a welcome addition to the libraries of teaching departments.” --Canadian Journal of Anesthesia

Book Bioethics Medicine and the Criminal Law Volume 2 Medicine Crime and Society

Download or read book Bioethics Medicine and the Criminal Law Volume 2 Medicine Crime and Society written by Danielle Griffiths and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, debates have arisen concerning the encroachment of the criminal process in regulating fatal medical error, the implementation of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 and the recent release of the Director of Public Prosecution's assisted suicide policy. Consequently, questions have been raised regarding the extent to which such intervention helps, or if it in fact hinders, the sustained development of medical practice. In this collection, Danielle Griffiths and Andrew Sanders explore the operation of the criminal process in healthcare in the UK as well as in other jurisdictions, including the USA, Australia, New Zealand, France and the Netherlands. Using evidence from previous cases alongside empirical data, each essay engages the reader with the debate surrounding what the appropriate role of the criminal process in healthcare should be and aims to clarify and shape policy and legislation in this under-researched area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thesiologist, were not included. Perhaps the next symposium will have a paper on his many contributions. Even though his dates are not quite modem (1813-1858), his accomplishments were, especially his book On Chloroform and Other Anaesthetics (1858), the first comprehensive textbook on anaesthesia [2]. There has been a real renaissance of interest in the history of anaesthesia. Among those responsible for this rebirth, besides Dr. Rupreht and Dr. Erdmann, are Dr. Selma Calmes and Dr. Rod Calverley, now on the Board of the new American society, the Anesthesia History Association. It held its inaugural meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, during the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, on 9 October 1983. The meeting was well attended, and the evening was profitable and delightful. Mention should also be made of the accomplishments of the nurse anaesthetists [3]. They are many in number, and generally they work under the direction of a physician anaesthesiologist. Although modem anaesthesia was Ameriea's first great medieal diseovery, it soon traversed the globe and found worldwide acceptance. The British, for example, have made many coeval and historie contributions. Besides Dr. Duncum one thinks of Prof. T. Cecil Gray, who pioneered the British use ofeurare [4], andDr. J. Alfred Lee, whowas a pioneerin the use ofspin~l anaesthesia and is currently working on the fifth edition of a textbook on spinal analgesia [7]. Dr.
