Book Stochastic Frontier Analysis

Download or read book Stochastic Frontier Analysis written by Subal C. Kumbhakar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-03-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern textbook presentations of production economics typically treat producers as successful optimizers. Conventional econometric practice has generally followed this paradigm, and least squares based regression techniques have been used to estimate production, cost, profit and other functions. In such a framework deviations from maximum output, from minimum cost and cost minimizing input demands, and from maximum profit and profit maximizing output supplies and input demands, are attributed exclusively to random statistical noise. However casual empiricism and the business press both make persuasive cases for the argument that, although producers may indeed attempt to optimize, they do not always succeed. This book develops econometric techniques for the estimation of production, cost and profit frontiers, and for the estimation of the technical and economic efficiency with which producers approach these frontiers. Since these frontiers envelop rather than intersect the data, and since the authors continue to maintain the traditional econometric belief in the presence of external forces contributing to random statistical noise, the work is titled Stochastic Frontier Analysis.

Book Dynamic Modelling of Stochastic Demand for Manufacturing Employment

Download or read book Dynamic Modelling of Stochastic Demand for Manufacturing Employment written by Gerard A. Pfann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-21 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book interrelated factor demand models are surveyed. New methods are developed and are analysed empirically using Dutch and U.K. time series data. New methods are discussed for obtaining closed form solutions of linear ratinal expectations models, providing deeper insights into the identification of structural parameters of underlying theoretical models; recently developed time series techniques are applied in order to estimate structural parameters and test for model specification, stationarity and stability through time; new models are developed in which the rather stringent and questionable restrictions of symmetry generally imposed upon stochastic adjustment models of labour demand are relaxed, the models are analysed empirically using time series data of Dutch and U.K. manufacturing production and nonproduction workers.

Book Essays in Honor of Edwin Mansfield

Download or read book Essays in Honor of Edwin Mansfield written by Albert N. Link and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edwin Mansfield was a research pioneer into the economics of R and D and technological change. As appreciation and remembrance for his scholarly contributions, eminent scholars have contributed original papers for this edited volume. The authors have followed the "Mansfieldian” approach of emphasizing economic insight and intuition over mathematical rigor and as a result are very accessable. Essays in Honor of Edwin Mansfield has the potential to serve as a reader in all advanced undergraduate and graduate classes/seminars in the economics of R and D and technological change. This edited volume will be the definitive work in the field.

Book Dynamic Models of the Firm

Download or read book Dynamic Models of the Firm written by Mark W.J. Blok and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the scientific field of optimal control theory applied to dynamic models of the firm. It discusses optimal investment, financing and production policies of the firm, that have to deal with a variety of aspects, such as financial constraints, start-up costs, business cycles, increasing returns to scale, production life cycles and experience curves. In contrast to many other publications on this subject, here, in combination with an analytical approach, the dynamic optimization problems are solved numerically with the aid of a powerful computer and specific programs for optimizing non-linear functions of a finite number of variables and non-linear constraints.

Book Social Ethics and Normative Economics

Download or read book Social Ethics and Normative Economics written by Marc Fleurbaey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of thirteen essays on social ethics and normative economics honouring Serge-Christophe Kolm's seminal contributions to this field addresses the following questions: How should the public sector price its production and services? What are the normative foundations of criteria for comparing distributions of riches and advantages? How should intergenerational social immobility and inequality in circumstances be measured? What is a fair way to form partnerships? How vulnerable to manipulation is the Lindahl rule for allocating public goods? What are the properties of Kolm's ELIE tax proposal? Would the addition of EU-level income taxes enhance equity? How should we compare different scenarios for future societies with different population sizes? How can domain conditions in social choice theory be justified using Kolm's epistemic counterfactuals? How can Kolm's distributive liberal contract be implemented? What are the implications of norms of reciprocity for the organization of society? The answers to these questions give major insight into the state-of-the-art of social ethics and normative economics and are thus an indispensable source for researchers in both of these fields.

Book Omitted Variable Tests and Dynamic Specification

Download or read book Omitted Variable Tests and Dynamic Specification written by Björn Schmolck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the omitted variable test for a multivariate time-series regression model. The empirical motivation is the homogeneity test for a consumer demand system. The consequences of using a dynamically misspecified omitted variable test are shown in detail. The analysis starts with the univariate t-test and is then extended to the multivariate regression system. The small sample performance of the dynamically correctly specified omitted variable test is analysed by simulation. Two classes of tests are considered: versions of the likelihood ratio test and the robust Wald test which is based on a heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation consistent variance-covariance estimator (HAC).
