One of the studies investigates industrial productivity by fitting in a theoretical model with quantitative methods. In addition, I explore how a demographic policy in China brings forth a profound impact in all aspects of the fast-growing economy. The first chapter, "Casual Labor, Uncertainty, and Technology Adoption in Agriculture," examines why both the technology adoption rate and labor productivity in agriculture are low in the context of developing countries. A two-stage model is built to explain how the availability of casual (non-permanent) labor ex-post, in the presence of uncertainty may affect agents' ex-ante technology choices. A higher degree of uncertainty induces the agents to choose traditional production technology that relies heavily on the labor input instead of using any modern intermediate inputs. By calibrating the model to fit the micro data in Tanzania, I show that this proposed framework can be used to account for two targets of interest: low aggregate labor productivity and the low technology adoption rate. Counterfactual exercises suggest that the severity of uncertainty before the harvest stage and the abundance of casual labor are the potential drivers for the two targets to be explained. The second chapter, "Growth in a Patrilocal Economy: Female Schooling, Household Savings, and China's One-Child Policy," is co-authored Wei-Cheng Chen. We develop a model of parental education decision to analyze how a population control policy affects saving and schooling in a patrilocal society, where sons are responsible to support aged parents more than daughters. Parent's investment in education depends on the degree of parental altruism and the need for old-age security. A tightened population control policy makes parental altruism more important relative to the security motive and shortens gender gap in education. We also take another crucial intergenerational incentive for daughter's education into account, since lower fertility promotes female labor market participation and increases the value of female education. Our model explains why the Chinese economy under the "One-Child Policy'' exhibits a rapid growth of relative female schooling. Moreover, this chapter also articulates the relationship between household savings and demographic changes based on a general equilibrium analysis, which has been discussed extensively in recent years to explain the China's saving puzzle.

This process is in turn connected with the diffusion of technology within and into the country (Clark et al. 1993). In the special case of developing countries the next step of industrialization must not even be an innovative one because the technology already exists in developed countries (Henry/Kneller/Milner 2009). Additionally the absorption of newer technologies should even become easier the bigger the lag to the technical frontier becomes. Hence, it has to be questioned why many developing countries are not able to efficiently overtake and use technologies from developed countries to reduce their lack of development although those technologies seem to be so easily available. The expansion of information and communication technology should make the access to them even easier. Another important point is that reaching a certain level of industrialization enables a country ́s industry to be innovative itself by adjusting existing technologies or by creating new connections between different “old” technologies. In this way further development could be reached like the economic success stories of East Asian countries, e.g. South Korea, show. It has to be questioned which lessons today ́s developing countries mainly in Africa can learn from these countries while keeping in mind that they do have other specific preconditions. This essay is structured as follows. It starts with outlining some necessary definitions. It is followed by an observation which requirements developing countries need to successfully absorb technologies. Afterwards it provides a look at the special case of South Korea and its development that shows how technology absorption could look like in a developing country. Then the essay continues with a guideline for a government ́s trade and technology policy before it ends with some final conclusions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching theme of my research is on issues related to innovation, with a focus on how different firms react to technological changes. These include new markets that are developed through international trade agreements, new production technology as a product of research and development (R & D), and even new regulations and standards that change the production process of a firm. We divide these changes into several categories, by whether they are mandatory or voluntary, whether they are 'horizontal' or 'vertical', or whether they are 'direct' or 'secondary' effects of a social change. First, we look at the responses of countries when mandatory changes are exogenously imposed. In order to do this, we look at the case of how international labor standards impact bilateral trade. Through this estimation, we examine how countries react not only in terms of adopting the standards, but also how they react when their trading partners adopt more standards. The impact of such technological change is heterogeneous across conventions and industries. We find that the international standards significantly explain the extensive margin of trade, but less of the intensive margin of trade. Second, we look at the endogenous responses of firms to market forces and firm level constraints. We model a firm which has an option to invest and improve their own productivity. A theoretical examination shows that the general equilibrium effect of innovation is positive by increasing consumer welfare through lower prices and added variety of goods. The model also shows policy implications related to market entry costs such as RD subsidies. Last, we look at technological changes as an externality. The case we examine is when technology is introduced due to the behavior of other firms. We look at the case of Chile, and examine how foreign direct investment (FDI) impact the exit behavior of firms. We see that survivability of domestic firms is effected by the behavior of multinationals, and that the level of technology of the industry is a significant factor in determining exit rates.

Book excerpt: Over the last decade, experimental and quasi-experimental methods have been favored by researchers in empirical economics, as they provide unbiased causal estimates. However, when implementing a program, it is often not possible to randomly assign subjects to treatment, leading to a possible endogeneity bias. This dissertation consists of two empirical policy studies relying on large micro-level datasets to address issues of endogeneity of adoption. The first essay investigates the effect of intellectual property (IP) protection on arms-length licensing of foreign technology using a pooled cross-section of firms from 58 developing economies. While prior investigations have been mostly cross-country analyses relying on proxies for technology adoption, and with technology exporters as a target population, I analyze the determinants of foreign technology licensing for firms in developing countries, thus focusing on the implications of IP protection on economic development. I use two different measures of IP protection: the Index of Patent Rights, based on the legal framework, and the Intellectual Property Protection index, emphasizing enforcement. I find that the relationship of IP protection and firm-level adoption of foreign technology is contingent on a country's development stage. Enacting stronger IP legislation has a positive effect only on the group of newly industrialized countries and transition economies, whereby a 1% increase in legal protection of intellectual property increases the probability of licensing foreign technology by over 20%. When I focus on small and medium-sized firms, I find evidence that increased enforcement of existing IP rights has a negative impact on foreign technology licensing. In the second essay, we use a unique dataset from a large urban school district in the southwest United States (LUSD-SW) to assess how uniforms affect student behavior and achievement, as well as other outcomes. While prior literature relies on cross-sectional OLS or first-difference evidence, we exploit the panel nature of our data. Since schools in LUSD are free to set their own uniform policies and most schools adopt uniforms during the time period for which we have data, we are able to produce causal estimates of uniform impacts on student outcomes through the use of school, student and principal fixed effects. In contrast to most of the prior literature, we find that uniforms generate improvements in attendance in middle and high/school. We also find that uniforms significantly reduce teacher attrition in elementary schools. Nonetheless, uniforms have little impact otherwise. We find no statistically significant effect on disciplinary infractions, achievement, grade retention or student movements between schools. Although we cannot completely rule out that other contemporaneous policy enactments generate the attendance and teacher attrition effects rather than uniforms, the robustness of our estimates to the inclusion of principal fixed effects, the finding that our estimates are similar when we account for adoption under new principals, and the lack of any increase in disciplinary infractions even in the short term suggest that the results are unlikely to be due to concurrent changes in enforcement policies.
