Book Essays on Church State and Politics

Download or read book Essays on Church State and Politics written by Christian Thomasius and published by Natural Law and Enlightenment. This book was released on 2007 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays selected here for translation derive largely from Thomasius's work on Staatskirchenrecht, or the political jurisprudence of church law. These works, originating as disputations, theses, and pamphlets, were direct interventions in the unresolved issue of the political role of religion in Brandenburg-Prussia, a state in which a Calvinist dynasty ruled over a largely Lutheran population and nobility as well as a significant Catholic minority. In mandating limited religious toleration within the German states, the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia (1648) also provided the rulers of Brandenburg-Prussia with a way of keeping the powerful Lutheran church in check by guaranteeing a degree of religious freedom to non-Lutherans and thereby detaching the state from the most powerful territorial church. Thomasius's writings on church-state relations, many of them critical of the civil claims made by Lutheran theologians, are a direct response to this state of affairs. At the same time, owing to the depth of intellectual resources at his disposal, these works constitute a major contribution to the broader discussion of the relation between the religious and political spheres.

Book Community State and Church

Download or read book Community State and Church written by Karl Barth and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-10-05 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Barth was the master theologian of our age. Whenever men in the past generation have reflected deeply on the ultimate problems of life and faith, they have done so in a way that bears the mark of the intellectual revolution let loose by this Swiss thinker. But his life was not simply one of quiet reflection and scholarship. He was obliged to do his thinking and writing in one of the stormiest periods of history, and he always attempted to speak to the problems and concerns of the time. In June 1933 he emerged as the theologian of the Confessional movement, which was attempting to preserve the integrity of the Evangelical Church in Germany against corruption from within and terror from without. His leadership in this struggle against Nazism also made it necessary for him to say something about the totalitarianism that the Soviet power was clamping down upon a large part of Europe. In this indirect way, a Barthian social philosophy emerged, and this theologian, who abjured apologetics and desired nothing but to expound the Word of God, was compelled by circumstances to propound views on society and the state that make him one of the most influential social thinkers of our time. David Haddorff is Associate Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at St. John's University, New York. He is the author of several articles and reviews, and the book: Dependence and Freedom: The Moral Thought of Horace Bushnell (1994). Download or read book Standard Essays on State Churches Classic Reprint written by Ralph Wardlaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Essays on State-Churches It is hoped that the friends of the Free Churches will give to this work such a circulation as will justify its issue. They will find in it the foundation principles of their existence laid down with unsurpassed power of reasoning and felicity of illustration. They will find in it an armoury of weapons wherewith the most able and plausible defences of Church Establishments may be successfully assailed. Most of the writers are now dead. Their works were of eminent service to their own generation, and, as now re published, will, it is believed, be of still greater service to those who have inherited the fruit of their labours. It may be desirable to state that any of these Essays can be had separately. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book State Churches and the Kingdom of Christ

Download or read book State Churches and the Kingdom of Christ written by John Allen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Churches and the Kingdom of Christ: An Essay on the Establishment of Ministers, Forms and Services of Religion by Secular Power; And on Its Inconsistency With the Free, Humbling, Spiritual Nature of the Christian Dispensation Having long been painfully impressed with the evils of compulsory ecclesiastical systems, existing in Britain and in other nations, I have thought it to be a duty to my own country in particular, to point out those evils, and faithfully to plead for such a thorough change in this respect, as is required by the great principles of the New Testament, and adapted to promote the highest interests of man. Far from being disposed to write in a strain of bitterness, I have endeavoured to handle the subject dispassionately and impartially, under the conviction that every Christian community is entitled to be treated with deference and respect. The present complaint is not against Protestant Episcopacy, or any other religious profession, as such; but applies to all systems for establishing and upholding any religious tenets by the power of the state. It is the principle of this union and enforcement, - the interference of the civil authority in religious matters, and the intrusion of ecclesiastical authority into secular matters, with whatever doctrines connected, that will be mainly considered in the following pages. I rejoice in believing that many of the ministers and private individuals of the Established Church of England, to which principally reference is made, are members of the true universal church of Christ, and children of God by adoption. The final chapter, specially written for this volume addresses three fundamental questions: "Did women have a Reformation?"; "What effects did the development of capitalism have on women?"; and "Do the concepts 'Renaissance' and 'Early Modern' apply to women's experience?" The book concludes with an extensive bibliographical essay exploring both English and German scholarship.
