Book excerpt: The prophet of social decadence, the theorist of violence and advocate of the general strike, the critic who stood Marx on his head, Georges Sorel was one of the foremost writers of this century to write extensively on the great importance of the moral aspects of social movements. His reconstruction of socialist ethics established him as one of the most remarkable critics of Marxist thought, and his writings in many aspects anticipated contemporary interpretations. From Georges Sorel, the first of two volumes of Sorel's work, presents his major contributions to social thought--articles on Marxism, religion, syndicalism, social myths, the philosophy of history and science, as well as a large and newly translated segment of "Reflections on Violence." In his introduction, John Stanley disputes the frequently encountered view of Sorel as a reactionary or extreme rightist, and emphasizes Sorel's attempt to provide Western society with a morality based on labor, struggle, and family life. Contents: Editor's Introduction; The Trial of Socrates: The Greek Oligarchy; The Socialist Future of the Syndicates; The Ethics of Socialism; Critical Essays on Marxism: Necessity and Fatalism in Marxism, Is There a Utopia in Marxism, Polemics for the Interpretation of Marxism; The Illusions of Progress: First Ideologies of Progress; Reflections on Violence: Letter to Daniel Halevy, The Proletarian Strike, The Morality of the Producers; Materials for a Theory of the Proletariat: Introduction, The Organization of Democracy; The Utility of Pragmatism: On the Origin of Truth, A Critique of Creative Evolution; A Sorel Bibliography.

Book Capitalism Socialism and Serfdom

Download or read book Capitalism Socialism and Serfdom written by Evsey D. Domar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-11-24 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection consists of four parts: Part I presents three non-technical essays on economic development and economic systems. Four out of five essays in Part II deal with the theory and measurement of the so-called Index of Total Factor Productivity for several countries. The fifth essay is on the theory of index numbers. The first essay of Part III compares the American and Soviet patterns of economic development and finds that the path followed by each country might have been optimal for it at the time. The second essay develops a general theory of a producer cooperative. The third essay discusses a method for avoiding monopolistic exploitation, under either system, without price control. Part IV presents three applications of economic theory to historical problems - in particular, to serfdom and slavery. The first, on 'The Causes of Slavery or Serfdom', has become a classic. The second challenges the widely accepted view that Russian serfdom had become unprofitable for the serf-owners before the Emancipation of 1861. The last shows that the oft-repeated estimate of the overcharge for land allotted to the former serfs by the Emancipation has little basis in fact.

Book Women and Socialism

Download or read book Women and Socialism written by Sharon Smith and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A valuable and uncommon perspective . . . The book covers both theory of women’s oppression and the history and politics of women’s movements.” —Dana L. Cloud, author of Reality Bites More than forty years after the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s, women remain without equal rights. If anything, each decade that has passed without a fighting women’s movement has seen a rise in blatant sexism and the further erosion of the gains that were won in the 1960s and 1970s. Yet liberal feminist organizations have followed the Democratic Party even as it has continually tacked rightward since the 1980s. This fully revised edition examines these issues from a Marxist perspective, focusing on the centrality of race and class. It includes chapters on the legacy of Black feminism and other movements of women of color and the importance of the concept of intersectionality. In addition, Women and Socialism: Class, Race, and Capital explores the contributions of socialist feminists and Marxist feminists in further developing a Marxist analysis of women’s oppression amid the stirrings of a new movement today. Praise for Sharon Smith’s Subterranean Fire “Sharon Smith brings that history to life once again, blasting through the myths of the working class that Trump-era narratives cling to in order to connect us once again to the possibility of building broad solidarity.” —Sarah Jaffe, author of Work Won’t Love You Back “A veteran worker-intellectual brilliantly addresses the crisis of the labor movement, skewering those who believe that renewal can come from the top down, and encouraging those who are fighting to rebuild it from the bottom up.” —Mike Davis, author of Planet of Slums
