Book The Faith of the Millions

Download or read book The Faith of the Millions written by George Tyrrell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the Millions: A Selection of Past Essays This Introduction may be regarded as in some sort the long-deferred continuation of the essay, entitled Tracts for the Million, in which it is maintained that the con ditions wherein we are placed in these modernized countries, justify some effort to meet the religious questionings of the semi educated in a way adapted rather to their incapacity than to the demands of better informed and more cultivated minds. We hold, however, that this can be at most a temporary palliative, but never a radical remedy against the spreading epidemic of unbelief. Sand-barriers may retard the ad vancing tide here and there, but eventually it creeps round and over. History shows us that the beliefs of the masses (we are not dealing with units in this discussion) follow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Essays: Essays on the Science of Religion The essay on Ancient Prayers has never, as far as I can ascertain, been published before. On looking through my father's papers I dis covered it among several unfinished essays, and as it was apparently ready for press I have included it in the present volume. The last essay, Is Man Immortal?' has also never been published in England, though it appeared in several American newspapers some years ago under the auspices of the American Press Association I am very grateful to that Association for supplying me with the manuscript which enables me to give it here as originally written. I have placed this article at the end of the volume, as it seemed to me that, whether they agree with its reasoning or not, every reader of my father's writings will feel that the last paragraph forms a beautiful ending to his literary work, a fitting farewell to the world which he was always trying to instruct and improve. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Essays on Church and Religion The present volume closes the series of my attempts to deal directly with questions concerning religion and the Church. Indirectly such questions must often, in all serious literary work, present themselves; but in this volume I make them my direct object for the last time. Assuredly it was not for my own pleasure that I entered upon them at first, and it is with anything but reluctance that I now part from them. Neither can I be ignorant what offence my handling of them has given to many whose good-will I value, and with what relief they will learn that the handling is now to cease. Personal considerations, however, ought not in a matter like this to bear sway; and they have not, in fact, determined me to bring to an end the work which I had been pursuing. Book The Origins of Religion and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origins of Religion and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by Andrew Lang and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origins of Religion, and Other Essays With regard to the essay on Apollo and the Mouse, it is to be remembered that animals acquire sacredness in religion in many ways besides what they may inherit from totemism. The works of Mr. J. G. Frazer show that, among agricultural peoples, the Corn Spirit is recognised in a vast number of animal forms, which are prominent in agricultural magic and religion. Thus a sacred animal associated with a god, say the Pig with Demeter, is not necessarily a survival. Of a totem. That the indo-european peoples were once totemic cannot be certainly proved, though many facts point in that direction. When we first meet them in history they have reached a point in civilisation at which we could not expect to discover more than faint and dubious totemic traces. Book The Origins of Religion and Language Considered in Five Essays Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origins of Religion and Language, Considered in Five Essays The name given to this book on the title-page was suggested by a friend, and it was adopted by the publisher in its first announcement, under the impression that I had proposed or approved it. I felt, however, and still feel, that such a title may seem to promise too much; but after full consideration I have retained it, on the ground that it expresses, clearly and concisely, the. principles which have guided me throughout the work. In the three Essays on the oldest forms of religion of which we have contemporary or trustworthy records, my object has been to prove that they were derived from a common source, and that all that is true, ennobling, and spiritual in them is due to that origin. In the Essay on the Rig Veda, I have first called attention to the certain fact that, at the period when the hymns were produced, two systems co-existed; the one resting upon a moral and spiritual basis; the other wholly naturalistic, personifying and adoring physical forces and agencies. In the second place, I have insisted upon the no less certain, though too often unnoticed fact that, of these two systems, the former was by far the more ancient, and that it represents the fundamental principles which were recognised by the ancestors of the Aryan race. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Art: And Other Essays "Science, O man! thou sharest with higher spirits, But Art thou hast alone." God is revealed to all the faculties of the soul. He is truth; he is goodness; he is beauty. He is known; he is loved; he is adored. He is the first and final principle of all knowledge; he is the ideal of every art; he is the type of all high and holy living. Art is the expression of ideal beauty; the resplendence of mind in matter, of the archetype in nature. It does not copy, but creates; never rests in the seen, but is transcendental; looks beyond, through nature, up to God. Whatever it sees, it sees to be unsatisfactory, and whatever it does, it straightway wishes undone, because the work is eternally below the thought.
