Book Economic Adjustment and Reform in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union

Download or read book Economic Adjustment and Reform in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union written by Franklyn D. Holzman and published by Durham : Duke University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic reform, structural adjustment, macroeconomic stabilization, and participation in the world economy are interconnected aspects of the same issue: the long-term economic viability of centrally planned economies in the rapidly changing economic environment of the modern world. Any economic strategy that focuses on only one or two of these aspects at the expense of the others is likely to fail; yet even strategies that build on all of these bases may well fail unless political leaders can muster exceptional skill, garner international support, and enjoy some good luck. The contributions to this volume reflect the recent research on this issue by various specialists on the economies of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Each author emphasizes macroeconomic stabilization, structural adjustment, participation in the larger world economy, or ecomonic reform.

Book Cultures and Nations of Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Cultures and Nations of Central and Eastern Europe written by Zvi Y. Gitelman and published by Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. This book was released on 2000 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in honor of one of the foremost observers of nationalism and culture in Central and Eastern Europe, this volume brings together 35 eminent scholars from the United States, Canada, Ukraine, and Poland. Supplemented by a bibliography of the work of Roman Szporluk, these fresh, urgent essays mirror Szporluk's broad and comparativist approach. Topics range from the rise of Ukrainian national consciousness in Galicia, to nationalism in contemporary Serbia; from the rise of private property in the Russia of Catherine II, to contemporary Russian attitudes toward Ukrainian nation building. Other essays explore the impact of theories of nationalism on the discipline of history and critique Ernest Gellner's "constructivist" theory of the nation.

Book A Difficult Neighbourhood

Download or read book A Difficult Neighbourhood written by John Besemeres and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a series of essays on key events in recent years in Russia, the western ex-republics of the USSR and the countries of the one-time Warsaw Pact, John Besemeres seeks to illuminate the domestic politics of the most important states, as well as Moscow’s relations with all of them. At the outset, he takes some backward glances at the violent suppression of national life in the ‘bloodlands’ of Europe during World War II by the Stalinist and Nazi regimes, which helps to explain much about the region’s dynamics since. His concern throughout is that a large area of Europe with a combined population well in excess of Russia’s could again be consigned by the West to Moscow’s care, not this time by more and less malign forms of collusion, but by distracted negligence or incomprehension. ‘This is a wonderful collection of essays from a leading Eastern Europe specialist. John Besemeres brings a lifetime of experience, profound insights, and an incisive style to subjects ranging from wartime and post-war Poland through contemporary Ukraine to Putin’s Russia. At a time when doublespeak has become the new normal, his refreshing honesty has never been in greater need.’ — Bobo Lo This publication was awarded a Centre for European Studies Publication Prize in 2015. The prize covers the cost of professional copyediting.

Book Sustainable Development for Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Sustainable Development for Central and Eastern Europe written by Ulrich Graute and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central and Eastern European Countries are undergoing a difficult transition process with consequences for spatial development. Europe needs a more bal anced, polycentric system of cities, a new urban-rural relationship, parity of ac cess to infrastructure and knowledge as well as prudent management and devel opment of the natural and cultural heritage. Dealing with these complex challenges and the need for sustainable develop ment politicians requires qualified advice from experts. To this end, the German Ministry for Regional Planning, Construction and Urban Development initiated the Network of Spatial Research Institutes in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE Net) in 1992. Exchange of knowledge and an open dialogue at all levels are pre conditions for the cooperative development of visions and strategies serving spa tial development in Europe. The annual conferences of the network have been a first steps towards closer cooperation. The high interest shown in these confer ences by academics and government representatives and the fact that several re search projects have already crystallised out of the debates they engendered indi cate that the network is meeting a need for exchange and cooperation. Decisions on spatial development do not stop at national borders and the dis cussion on spatial development in any European region has therefore to take the European context into consideration. A special advantage of this publication is that, as well as focusing on spatial development and research in CEE regions, it also discusses Central and Eastern Europe in a European context.

Book The East European Economies in the 1970s

Download or read book The East European Economies in the 1970s written by Alec Nove and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East European Economies in the 1970s reviews the development of economic policy in Eastern Europe in the 1970s. This book includes individual country studies that compare and contrast both the aims of economic development and the results of the growth process, as well as the instruments employed in economic policy. More specifically, this book examines what has happened during the past decade after the fundamental changes in economic policy that occurred in the 1960s. This text is comprised of 10 chapters; the first of which provides a background on economic reform in Eastern Europe during the 1970s. Attention then turns to the economic policy, methods, and performance of the USSR after 1970. The chapters that follow focus on the German Democratic Republic, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Yugoslavia. This book concludes with a discussion on the economic system of Albania in the 1970s, focusing on the country's conservative radicalism, agriculture, and sharp disputes on economic policy between 1974 and 1976. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on how the ""process of reconstruction within the system"" has led to increasing differentiation of aims, institutions, and instruments of economic policy between individual countries. This book will be of interest to political science students, political scientists, political economists, and policy analysts.
