Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Naval Defence The value of the kind of studies embraced in these essays in enabling us to make correct forecasts was set forth in the Preface to the First Edition, so far as sail power, very heavy guns, classification of ships, and the leading principles of Imperial defence were concerned. There was a lament over our failure to study the question of naval tactics seriously, and by the use of the inductive method and a fear was expressed lest such neglect might some day land us in trouble. No war had then occurred to test any of the tactical forecasts made in the last two chapters, and so nothing could be shown in the way of experiment to justify the method pursued in that domain of naval science. But since then the Battle of Yalu has been fought. Clearing the nature of the battle from side issues, we may say that it was a trial of strength between two tactical formations - the "line abreast," which, in the military phrase adopted by Captain Bainbridge-Hoff of the United States Navy, would be "line"; and the "line-ahead," which, in the language of the same authority, would be "column." Book National Policy and Naval Strength and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book National Policy and Naval Strength and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by Herbert William Richmond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Policy and Naval Strength, and Other Essays Offa, King Of Mercia, in the eighth century, after a glorious reign of nine years, bequeathed to England the useful lesson that he who will be secure on land must be supreme at sea.' 1 This 'lesson can be traced back through the pages of history for more than 2000 years, where it takes the form of an immutable law never so strikingly affirmed as in the rise of the British Empire. It has at some periods been effectively applied to the salvation of our people; but there have been other times when it seemed to be forgotten, or when naval force was misused with inexorable national loss, happily in our case, never yet irretrievable. If this is the unbroken teaching of history, and if in this country the truth is generally admitted, at least as a pious opinion, why have disastrous aberrations left their mark on the national life, and why have blighting heresies subverted national war policy? These and many other important questions are closely analysed in vice-admiral Sir Herbert Richmond's admirable studies in which he seeks to build up a philosophy of British Warfare based upon history the only sure guide for the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy and the Nation: Or Naval Warfare and Imperial Defence The England of Raleigh had a population of less than six millions, and a trade insignificant if measured by modern standards. Until after the Union of 1707, Scotland brought no strength to the national cause, while Ireland was a standing source of weakness. The young settlement of Virginia was not founded till 1606, and Jamaica was not wrested from Spain till 165 5. Relatively to France, Spain, and Austria, almost to Holland, England was a small State, with few resources. Her one hope of future greatness lay in the manifestation of sea power - in the gifts of what has been styled, with strange oblivion of the plain teaching of history, the unstable element. The British Empire of to-day embraces eleven millions of square miles, with a population approaching three hundred and fifty millions, and a sea-borne commerce whose annual value is at least sterling.' This stupendous development of three hundred years has been rendered possible solely by naval agencies. So abundantly has the sturdy faith of the Elizabethan seamen been justified by works. Book Talking about Naval History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT ON THIS PRINT PRODUCT-- OVERSTOCK SALE -- Significantly reduced list price Twenty essays selected from the writings of John B. Hattendorf, Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History at the U.S. Naval War College, between 2001 and 2009. They represent a wide historical perspective that ranges across nearly four centuries of maritime history. A number of these pieces have been published previously but have appeared in other languages and in other countries, where they may not have come to the attention of an American naval reading audience. This collection is divided into parts that deal with four major themes: the broad field of maritime history; general naval history, with specific focus on the classical age of sail, from the mid-seventeenth century to the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815; the wide scope of American naval history from 1775 to the end of the twentieth century; and finally, the realm of naval theory and its relationship to naval historical studies. They are reprinted, with only minor alterations, as they originally appeared. This work may appeal to general history readers, scholarly and general adult readers of history especially naval and maritime, plus students pursuing coursework in military science degree programs.
